Mani Festo joins the SweetBox ranks with two acid hardcore jungle tekno A-bombs: ‘Toxic Waste’ and ‘Warehouse 2.0’.

A true man of the moment, Mani’s finely tuned productions are in high demand right now. His catalogue boasts releases for the likes of Rupture, Hooversound, WNCL, E-Beamz and the Club Glow imprint he co-runs with Denham Audio, Borai and LMajor. 

His SweetBox debut starts deceptively slow, building up a head of steam via an incessant pulse and faint industrial chug. Once ‘Toxic Waste’ lets loose its slamming four-to-the-floor kick, however, it’s on a one-way train to total mayhem. Blistering breaks burst through the gloom as the track hurtles onwards like an unstoppable juggernaut, finally taking control in the form of clattering percussive carnage.
Flipside ‘Warehouse 2.0’ sees a similar pairing of jackhammer kicks and a chunky breakbeat, this time sliced through by a ravenous acid line that rises and rises, until it threatens to swallow the track whole. Paired with gargantuan, psychedelic arpeggios, as the title suggests, this one’s foaming at the mouth for a warehouse to pack to the rafters.

Another two unstoppable weapons for both the Mani Festo and SweetBox arsenals, ‘Toxic Waste’ / ‘Warehouse 2.0’ will drop 30th April.

London producer Slacker’s rise has been steady. First announcing himself to the scene with the flurry of wonderful SoundCloud uploads, the producer has since released on Lobster Theremin and his own co-owned Pseudonym Records, winning critical acclaim from publications such as Resident Advisor and Ransom Note, and support from fellow exciting up-and-comers such as Otik (on Midland’s InterGraded label) and tastemakers such as Berlin based selector CCL.

The title track is a hard cut of malfunctioning electro; frantic, screwface energy designed for small spaces with no windows, while ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is a brooding, chugging cut of psychedelic dub-techno; something you might have heard Andrew Weatherall or David Holmes playing in the nineties. 

‘Mezcal’ sees the artist venture into newer, faster-paced territories as Slacker incorporates a Chicago juke aesthetic; sensationally bouncy, incredibly fun and captivatingly energetic, with just enough electro flavour for those who lack the ability to footwork to continue to dance. 

Rounding off the release is the most quintessential Slacker track on there - ‘Prototype’ - a cut of acid dipped, in-your-face electro; raw and uncompromising.

Also featuring on the record is digi-only track ‘Sacrifice of the Self’.

Following a killer trance-electro workout while on remixing duties for Not Gonna Get Us duo t.A.T.u - and releases on FTP, Mechatronica and Dark Net - Tbilisi, Georgia artist SALOME prepares her Lobster Theremin debut with four massive cuts of dark, rhythmic energy.

‘Stalker’ presses play with a cut of dystopian electro; sent spinning through a world much darker than our own, it's what Boba Fett would play through his helmet speakers when on a bounty hunting mission - sci-fi led electronica that packs a punch. Time-warped trance and a high velocity, psychedelic workout takes us into hyper-drive on ‘Misbehaviour’, before ‘Doppleganger’ plummets us deep into the earth's subterranean with a cut of melting, dungeon electro.

‘Terror’ rounds the original masters off with a broken-techno aesthetic; screeching at breakneck speed through ravey hardcore stabs and pounding energy. The remix comes courtesy of Jenson Interceptor, and is every bit as good as you would expect from the face of contemporary electro: uncompromising in-your-face. 

Also available via digital purchases only is ‘CRAVE’; a collaborative track made with Alien Boogie commander Volruptus.

Drumskull is a London based DJ, music producer and AV artist. His debut album ‘Interlocked’ was released as a 2 x vinyl gatefold LP on Seagrave in 2020 and brought together a wealth of influences from hardcore rave, UKG, jungle, juke/footwork, deep house and broken beat. The album garnered support from leading DJs and and musical tastemakers from across the dance music spectrum including Monki, Doc Scott, Addison Groove, Gerd, Mr Beatnick, Josh Wink, My New Leng, Bailey Ibbs, Sherelle, Len Faki, Maceo Plex, Ahadadream, Mosca, Perc and Orde Meikle of Slam to name a few. Drumskull's 'Negative 7' single taken from the album was recently released with remixes from Coco Bryce, Etch and Benny Ill along with an appearance alongside Mani Festo, Sicknote & Justice and Low End Activist on the 'Quarters Volume 1 EP' V/A 12". Drumskull releases have received radio play from Avalon Emerson on BBC Radio 1, Tom Ravenscroft on BBC Radio 6 as well as a multitude of supporters across the online radio universe and have also featured on the Spotify playlists of Hospital Records and Sherelle.
 
As a DJ with years of experience Drumskull's sets are aimed squarely at the dance floor comprising a firing, hybrid blend of UKG, bass, modern hardcore, jungle and juke/footwork. The guest DJ mix requests have been coming in thick and fast with Drumskull appearing on NTS, Represent FM, Rinse FM, SWU FM and 1BTN FM. Already a regular DJ at HWK in Hackney Wick, Drumskull will be appearing at TOLA in Peckham on 24th October.

Another collection of 15 Original Unmixed Underground Tracks collected to reenvisage / reimagine the golden era of Rave.

 Back in the early days of Rave, Underground DJ's and Producers experimented, evolving the early Acid House movement at speed. Fusing Techno with Breakbeats and pushing the BPM's ever higher, Jungle Techno and Hardcore spread across the land mutating constantly.  We asked the artists in this compilation to hark back to that era and produce us something that would in some way pay homage to that time.

To say the release of this EP's tracks is long-awaited would be a terribly gross understatement, so it's with much fanfare and general HQ excitement that we announce the sophomore release from the monstrously talented Ross From Friends. 

Having been circulating on the net for a fair while now, 'Talk To Me You'll Understand' finally arrives with a fresh mastering, but still thudding along with those scuffed Reebok drums and soaked into fuzzy, stomach-squeezing low-pass filter. All soft chords, soothing vocals, deep-sea bass and skittering hats. 

Middle-man 'Gettin' It Done' is a solid label favourite. Less the full vocal flourishes and more the tinkered & chopped MPC underpinned by more dusty drum work that just grows in impact as the track goes on. One for late running and early morning truckin'. 

Last but not least comes the R'n'B-inflicted house jam 'Bootman'. Although it takes a good couple of minutes to get going, this is pure 2016 date playlist vibes. Slip the iPhone into the restaurant system and watch the silk melt down from the walls, the tables coat in velvet and ever-lasting passion effervesce from the heaving masses. Proper nawteeee.

HAWAII003 // Ross From Friends - You'll Understand

Sweely comes crashing through the windows of the Distant Hawaii beach house HQ with a humungous, stomping, NY-Jersey inspired EP that combines war drum level percussion with soulfully flowing vocals and lush pads galore.

All The Reasons has done the rounds for a while now and it's an absolute monster. Massive heaving kicks rumble under clattering hats and a soft, woozy pad and hawt-as-hell vocal flourishes.

Following on a similar tip, Around is a more extended affair, morphing from a brooding down-pitched moaner to a arm-throwing, hip-slinging Jersey banger straight outta NYC.

On the flip, Yes He is keeps the New York house vibes flowing on a slightly more low slung tip. One for the slow summer Sunday terrace dance. Lastly, Blue Faces takes a plunge into the deep blue, skin fizzing with the cold caress of salt-water and seaweed on freshly sun-kissed skin. One for the sunset and sea-lovers.
