My contribution was recorded live at House Proud Mpls on 10.1.21. Recording is a bit crunchy in some places but it was SUCH a good night I couldn't not share it. Legit had goosebumps several times during my set. Enjoy!

As one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam, Orlando Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Netherland’s most original and inventive producers in the world of electronic dance music.

Voorn began djing at the tender age of 12 and went on to win the Dutch DMC DJ Championships in 1986 with his own characteristic blend of hiphop and electro. Towards the end of the eighties he acquired his first sequencer, packed away his turntables and turned his hand to producing.

Following a series of dancefloor tracks recorded for the now defunct Lower East Side Records under the monniker of Frequency in the early nineties (Where Is Your Evidence, Kiss The Sky…), he was introduced to Juan Atkins (Industrial Metal, Game One) and went on to work with both Derrick May and Blake Baxter (as one half of the Ghetto Brothers). Voorn was also recording as Nighttripper (Tone Exploitation), Format (Solid Session - one of the most sought after classic techno records until its re-release in 1998), Basic Bastard, The Living Room, Baruka, Fix (Flash on Kevin Saunderson’s legendary KMS label), Dope Dog, Boy (Paco Di Bango’s World) and Stalker (The Stalker/The Riderman)… Many of these tracks can be heard on the double cd Best of Nightvision.

Having made his mark producing his own vision of techno, ambient and hiphop and adamantly sidestepping genre limitations thus far, Voorn’s announcement that his "Redeye" album would see a foray into drum’n’bass territory aroused both anticipation and curiosity. While Voorn undoubtedly has an ear for melody, this has always been combined with an innate understanding of the importance of atmosphere and tension in music. Like Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and Photek, he uses drum’n’bass rhythms to create something beyond pure dance music.

WORK Residency Program: Resident Stephen Disario Mix

As usual, we try and let the mix do most of the talking. She brings a deadly techno mix filled with excellent underground tracks and excellent mixing, as I've come to expect from Tasha. Listening to her sets is always a treat.

She has played all over from London to Australia, including festivals Glastonbury & Dimensions. She plays regularly at Tresor, HÖR, Fabric and Fold. She also has a monthly residency on @rinsefm - first Friday of the month 23:00-01:00 BST.

Description:
Whilst on a my daily walk around the neighbourhood, I looked down at my white socks and wondered what sounds would be heard if I slipped my iPhone into my socks and pressed record? My initial thoughts were granular synthesis using my Granie synthesiser. It was very much a case of expecting weird stuff not knowing what sounds it may pick up. Five passages in White Socks: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All using the sounds from the white socks passed through the Granie granular synthesiser to provide inspiration for performances on Soma hardware synthesisers Lyra 8, Enner and The Pipe. The Soma COSMOS provided the echo chamber that talks to the musician, the musician responds. Both the Lyra 8 and Enner were driven by my human hands, turning dials or activating sensitive touch pads. The Soma Pipe was driven by my human voice. Final multi-track recording by my Granie and FindTheBeat digital software based synthesiser/recording systems. Keeping it human, no AI used here!

Other ambient sounds,
Pace builds up,
Sock sounds enter Granular synthesis,
Sounds re-imagined,
Lyra 8 interprets.

Echos of granulised sock sounds,
Shifting delays,
Tentative touches of Lyra 8,
Like shifting sands,
The Granular socks come and go,
Washing over Lyra 8.

Tides of granular socks,
Swaying rhythms of the Enner,
Walker journey continues,
Is it bird song,
Or is it Enner speaking?

Tidal remnants of the grains float past,
Walker responds through the Pipe,
Grains answer back,
Ever present steps of the walker,
Stirring the grains.

Grains intertwine and reverberate,
Lyra 8 interrupts,
Pauses for a moment,
Walker contemplates,
Lyra beckons.


Granular synthesis in Granie release 6.2 using the new graphical sequencer. The Soma COSMOS played the roles of reverb and taking fragments of sounds from the Lyra 8, Pipe and Enner replaying them in creative ways as directed by the performer. Each of the five passages of a continuity of theme, using the rhythmic choices of the previous passage as a starting point, then changing them. 

Tuning of the granular synthesiser was a simple harmonic series of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 with the master reference frequency of 6 Hz. Because it was granular synthesis, this 6 Hz was the replay frequency of the grains, length of grains (in milliseconds) was varied. There were up to four voices with their root notes as follows: voice 1 tuned at 6 Hz, voice 2 tuned a perfect fourth a 4/3 ratio at 8 Hz, voice 3 tuned 4 octaves up a ratio of 16/1 at 96 Hz. Occasionally a fourth voice came into play at 0.346 Hz, again tuned in a harmonic series, with the root tuned 4949 cents below the master reference frequency of 6 Hz. The negative 4949 cents (4 octaves and 139 cent), seems like an odd ball tuning, it's root note was tuned by ear, I liked it, so kept it.

The Soma Pipe algorithms used were Orpheus (twin resonant reverberators), Filtera (resonant band pass filter) and Drum #1.
