Over the past several decades, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) has continued to increase. Projections estimate that worldwide, more than 125 million EVs will be on the road by 2030. At the heart of these advanced vehicles is the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery which provides the required energy storage. This paper presents and compares key components of Li-ion batteries and describes associated battery management systems, as well as approaches to improve the overall battery efficiency, capacity, and lifespan. Material and thermal characteristics are identified as critical to battery performance. The positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes and the physical implementation of Li-ion batteries are discussed. With the projected size of the global electric vehicle market, expansion of battery manufacturing capacity will largely be driven by electrification in the car market. Background:

 The OneTouch Verio Reflect (OTVR) meter provides ColorSure Dynamic Range Indicator (DCRI) and Blood Sugar Mentor (BSM) features that are complemented by the OneTouch Reveal (OTR) mobile app. We sought to provide real-world evidence that these products support improved glycemic control. 

Methods:

 Anonymised glucose and app analytics were extracted from the LifeScan server for 4154 people with type 1 diabetes (PwT1D) and 13,623 people with type 2 diabetes (PwT2D). Data from their first 14 days were compared with the 14 days before the 90-day time point using paired within-subject differences. 

Results:

 Percentage glucose readings in range (RIR) 70-180 mg/dL improved by +8.1% (from 58% to 66.1%) in PwT1D and by +11.2% (from 72.4% to 83.6%) in PwT2D. Hyperglycemic readings (>180 mg/dL) reduced by -8.5% (from 37.1% to 28.6%) in PwT1D and by -11.3% (from 26.4% to 15.1%) in PwT2D. Mean glucose reduced on average by -14.5 mg/dL (from 174.8 to 160.2 mg/dL) in PwT1D and -18.2 mg/dL (from 157.8 to 139.6 mg/dL) in PwT2D. Glycemic improvement was strongly associated with OTR app engagement. Two to three sessions or 11 to 20 min/week in the app improved readings in range in PwT1D by +7.0% or +8.4%, respectively. Similar engagement trends for glycemic improvement were observed in PwT2D. Proportions of subjects achieving a 5% or 10% improvement in RIR were 46.9%/36.6% for PwT1D and 48.7%/37.7% for PwT2D. 

Conclusions:

 Real-world data from over 17,000 people with diabetes (PWDs) demonstrated significantly improved readings in range and reduced the burden of hyperglycemia in PWDs using the OTVR meter and OTR app.


We evaluated the quality of the generated images based on the five most crucial metrics for anatomical imaging: spatial resolutions (axial, lateral and elevational), signal-to-noise ratio, location accuracies (axial and lateral), dynamic range and contrast-to-noise-ratio26.


Gene-expression analysis is increasingly important in biological research, with real-time reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) becoming the method of choice for high-throughput and accurate expression profiling of selected genes. To date, internal control genes are most frequently used to normalize the mRNA fraction. This internal control - often referred to as a housekeeping gene - should not vary in the tissues or cells under investigation, or in response to experimental treatment. However, many studies make use of these constitutively expressed control genes without proper validation of their presumed stability of expression. But the literature shows that housekeeping gene expression - although occasionally constant in a given cell type or experimental condition - can vary considerably (reviewed in [9,10,11,12]). With the increased sensitivity, reproducibility and large dynamic range of real-time RT-PCR methods, the requirements for a proper internal control gene have become increasingly stringent. In this study, we carried out an extensive evaluation of 10 commonly used housekeeping genes in 13 different human tissues, and outlined a procedure for calculating a normalization factor based on multiple control genes for more accurate and reliable normalization of gene-expression data. Furthermore, this normalization factor was validated in a comparative study with frequently applied microarray scaling factors using publicly available microarray data.

To protect sales of their more lucrative laptops, manufacturers soon imposed constraints on the hardware of their netbooks, which had the unintended effect of pushing netbooks into a market niche where they had few distinctive advantages over traditional laptops or the newly emerging tablet computer.[6]


By 2011, the increasing popularity of tablet computers (particularly the iPad), which offered a different form factor, but with improved computing capabilities and lower production cost, had led to declining sales of budget netbooks.[7] Meanwhile, the emergence of ultra-light laptops with the dimensions and hardware specifications of high-end laptops, most notably the MacBook Air, allowed fewer sacrifices for a lightweight laptop, at a considerably higher price,[8][9] eating into sales of high-end netbooks. Soon after,[10] Intel promoted the "Ultrabook" as a new high-mobility standard for laptop computers, which some analysts predicted would succeed in markets where netbooks had failed.[11][12][13]


Against these two new rapidly expanding product categories, netbooks, less portable and easy to use than tablet computers and less performant than ultrabooks, rapidly lost market share, with price as their only obvious strong suit by roughly 2011.[14] By the end of 2012, few new laptops were marketed as "netbooks",[15] and the term disappeared from common usage.


By 2014, most laptops that fit the definition of "netbook" were Chromebooks. Others included certain of the HP Essential laptops and various palmtop computers for specialized purposes, such as the GPD Win series of palmtops, which included controls for applications such as portable video gaming. While these laptops and devices are often considered successors to, descendants of, or continuations of the netbook product class, the word "netbook" became a historical term, usually referring to those laptops that were originally marketed as "netbooks".
