The Pan-Caribbean workforce brought in to build the Panama Canal shaped the musical culture on the isthmus, and it became a hot-spot for new rhythms. Growing out of the combos nacionales scene, one of the most successful funk and soul groups of 60s and 70s Panama, Los Dinamicos Exciters (later The Exciters) was led by drummer Horacio ‘Ray’ Adams. Legendary in their day, the band were booked solid for years. Their core sound was Latin soul and funk (heavily influenced by James Brown) but they also played boogaloo, calypso and ska. The US Black Power movement struck a chord, especially in the Canal Zone, where Afro-Panamanians had long suffered discrimination. Co-founders of the Instituto Soul, the Exciters were the first to invite an African-American ‘soul queen’ to lead their carnival parade in 1971.

Montenegro-based DJ Mr Goju takes great pride in promoting the hottest in nu-disco, modern funk, soul, swing and jazz through both his weekly radio show and record label. Voodoocuts kicks off the A-Side with Kelja, a raw 70s afro-funk bomb from the Ivory Coast. The American-funk inspired tune features a funky bassline & killer organ vibe, mingled with a dirty, raw saxophone line and James Brown influenced vocals. Voodoocuts' rework turns the track into a serious dancefloor banger!
In 'The Tortoise Loop' Voodoocuts blends an infectious groove with pounding drum breaks and hypnotic vocals. A hot afro-latin joint not to be missed!
On the flip SoulBrigada takes things to a disco tip. 'Hustleman' is a stunning afrofunk & disco gem from West Africa. The second track 'Madera' is an afro-disco gem with a compelling Cape Verdean groove. 
SoulBrigada rearranged the tracks, added drums, samples and effects building a bridge between past and present – without ever losing its original organic vibe. Two essential tunes for your record bag!

"Hot on the heels of their critically praised album "Havana '58" and with fans worldwide clamoring for more, The Bahama Soul Club has now called upon a brilliant range of producers, DJs and artists to put their own personal spin on Bahama's latest release. Sifting through the album's finest moments they worked their magic on selected tracks and rebooted them into pure rhythmic bliss: "The Havana Remixes" is a bright collection of Latin, House, Jazz, Funk, Soul & Disco with a thoroughly modern take on Dancefloor Jazz.

Opener "Muévelo Papi" is a stirring 60s Boogaloo-hip-twist by the mighty Club Des Belugas, while Geordie mate Smoove from Newcastle turns “No Words” into a fusion of Jazz-house and Breakbeat. Opolopo pulls "Dizzy's Bounce" deeeep into jazzy House while Maestro&Vezzola and Chinchin's Zouzoulectric vs. Gardener Of Delight both having a diverse view on "Tropicana Flight", giving it a Disco-Latin-House-Funk treatment. 
Suonho from Italy jams a more modern Soul-Disco-Funk on "No Words" and amps up the funk quotient on "Muévelo Papi" with a touch of Jazz and a Latin Twist. Rounding off the release is an unexpected Nu-skool Brazilika-brukbeat from Positive Flow aka Jesse Reuben Wilson on "Elegguà" and some solid Latin funky breaks from Jack&Jointz on the rolling "Rumba Fugaz".

All remixes are mastered by The Uncle and very special radio-edits were made exclusively for the beautiful 180g vinyl. Containing nine tracks, this 12" looks like a neat introduction for newcomers and a nice round up for long-term Bahama Soul Club admirers. The full extended versions of all remixes will be released on CD and Digital formats."

We were lucky enough to be given a chance to do our own take on this killer jam by Jungle fire. The cut is a great cover of Comencemos by Phirpo y sus Caribes, which is in itself a re-imagining of Fela's Let's Start. We took it partway back to Fela with and made sure to keep the dancefloor in mind.
