@nozagam is a solo project by French experimental-club producer Etienne Zastko who takes a bleak view of a destructive Anthropocene Epoch, in which “utopias can’t exist and we’ve lost our way in our blind devotion to technology”. The album pieces together a chronology of catastrophic events. A fictionalized soundtrack to humankind’s end-cycle. The abrasive textures and suffocating atmosphere immerse us into a total universe where everything that could have gone wrong has. Affirmations and tech bro optimism didn’t quite cut it. And if those disembodied voices that sporadically reach out are the survivors, that’s not good news.

The visual aesthetic of Zagam is one of fusion, a medieval plague doctor mask with a 23rd-century twist. “Anthropocene” mines a similarly disparate set of influences, spanning an evermore hybridized clubspace. Gqom, grime, industrial techno, footwork: everything is fair game. The rich musical background and hard sonic palette of Zagam make for a perfect match for the hybrid electronics approach of Unizone.

You smell that? That’s the smell of burnt rubber, cold rain, and broken promises. Welcome to the Mean Streets kid. 

You ever hear jungle breaks echoing through an empty parking garage at 3 a.m.? That’s what this is for. Mean Streets is built for late-night runs and lost causes. It's a drum and bass tribute to the golden age of the PlayStation, back when everything felt faster, dirtier, realer. Back when we were still counting polygons kid. 

Think Wipeout 2097, Ridge Racer, Need for Speed. This is the sound of busted-up jungle drum and bass straight from a memory card left in the rain.

Yeah, there's liquid DnB in here, even some future garage, the kind that creeps in when the streets are empty and the rain won’t stop and you can't get those damned memories outta your head. But don’t get it twisted kid, the heart of this record is that early-2000s jungle mayhem. The stuff that came out of blown speakers and off bootleg discs. That sound that made you drive too fast and care too little.

So here’s your induction, rookie. The Mean Streets don’t care who you are. But if you’re gonna race out here, you better have the right soundtrack. And now, you do.

FlökosH & Evaa - "Fragment"

Russian producer Shyqa (@shyqa000) is next up on Genome 6.66 Mbp (@genomeshanghai) with an EP described as " a mutated, restless take on trance". The last time Shyqa appeared on the label was back in 2016 on Genome's first compilation. That year he also released his 'Predator's Try' EP via Eco Futurism Corporation, with his 'Victim' EP arriving in 2017 via Extasis Records.

On 'Hollow' Shyqa moves through emotions in a rather tide-like fashion, shifting from neurotic mind-melters('Mess') into grin-inducing peak-time euphoria ('Lair') right through to more ambient, soul-searching and pensive moments on tracks like today's premiere cut 'Anxiety', which features Swiss grime producer @1Shayu.

Genome 6.66 Mbp will release 'Hollow' on February 25.
