It's been a while since the last Sound of Africa mix. This time around we showcase a bunch of  big tunes coming out of Nigeria - including brand spanking new music from P-Square, J. Martins, and Dr. Sid, among others.

"WHAT IS PON PON?"
For over a year now, the "Pon Pon" sound of songs like "Pana" by Tekno or "Mad Over You" by Runtown have completely taken over the Nigerian music scene.  Davido went as far as to proclaim "Na ‘pon pon’ sound dey reign now ooo!! NO JONZE!! ALL OTHER SOUNDS NAH D LEAST FOR NOW..." The 3/2 note syncopated rhythm has been in Ghana for years, often times referred to as the highlife bell pattern, but has recently been popularized by Nigerian artists such as Mr Eazi, Davido and the likes. 

Sound of Africa vol. 9 part 1 showcases this latest trend by compiling some of the best examples of "Pon Pon" as well as taking a slight look at another upcoming trend in Afrobeats - r&b-infused afrobeats from the UK.  Together they demonstrate the future of West African pop music as it continues to gain global recognition.

It's been a minute (actually 7 years) since I focused one of these Sound of Africa mixes solely on South Africa, but you can't deny the excitement around Amapiano.  It's been one of the most exciting genres to come out of the continent recently.  2019 saw it explode beyond South African borders and start influencing producers and DJs all over the world, including many Nigerian afrobeat hitmakers.  This mix is a quick introduction to some of the biggest hits in the genre and hopefully demonstrates why people are so excited to see where the genre will go.

Juan G. & DJ Tsedi - Azonto Fiesta: The Biggest Azonto Anthems

This was the first installment of the Sound of Africa mixtape series.  I originally posted this on the digging4gold site April 2011.

At the time, the Azonto sound was still developing and was not yet a household name in Ghana. The biggest hit at the time - and one of the songs that led to the Azonto explosion - "Muje Baya," was blasting out out of every kiosk and open street pub in Accra. 

So, after months of dancing to these tunes, My friend, DJ Kev, and I decided to rent some cdjs and lock ourselves up in a dusty Accra apartment for a couple hours to bust out this mix.  Looking back, this mix is a great example of the transition hiplife was making into the more house-oriented production of Azonto.  It nothing else, if was definitely the launching point for my current musical trajectory. Enjoy!
