I don't often get sad when someone I don't know and have never met passes away, but in the case of Nathan Coles I felt, probably like many people, that I got a glimpse of him through his music.

This podcast/mix series wouldn't exist without his influence; from its name "Kitchen Spasm" , and to me being inspired by the original tech house  records on Wiggle, Surreal, Eukahouse, Swag etc. which were all seemingly produced by the same few people, Nathan being one of them, using various aliases. I always thought it was funny, which is why most of the mixes on Kitchen Spasm are me under silly aliases.

The original tech house sound remains one of my favourites to this day, the fun and the energy it contains is like nothing else. Like all musicians Nathan Coles will live on through his music, I wanted to put together a mix that showcased some of that music. A  large percentage of my tech house collection has Nathan Coles name attached to it some way, I don't want to diminish the work of the other producers involved in making these tracks, they are all equally brilliant to my ears, but ultimately today, this is a tribute to Nathan Coles, made up from the sound and records helped create.

Sadly, I had an ear infection so I couldn't make the gig (lack of hearing is not something that usually helps when mixing techno at high volumes).  Anyway, this set is roughly what I had planned to play at that party.  I will also say that this was supposed to be a warm up set, although the party did start at midnight so I would have got away with it.

"What is this nonsense?" I hear you ask, let me explain:

I've been toying with the idea of changing the name of the BRAWLcast and combining it with the Kitchen Spasm podcast for a while now. All those years ago my initial idea for the Bc was that it could consist of mixes from any genre of music, and sometimes it's hard to decide which banner some of these mixes should come under, I won't have that problem anymore.

Although changing the name after all this time may seem pointless, with the end of Horror Brawl calling the podcast/mix series BRAWLcast no longer feels right.

After months of "shall I, shan't I" moments I have finally settled on a name that I like, one that I think represents how I feel about all the music I love, and play in my various DJ sets under various silly names: SALIENCE.

Simply put, salience is the quality of something being noticeable, prominent and standing out from its neighbours or surroundings.

The first mix is starting at number 404, because I don't want to start from scratch, and it would be the number of the next BRAWLcast.  It is also an error code we're all familiar with for something that cannot be found. So, if like me, you were looking for BRAWLcast 404, you haven't found it. This ignores the fact that the KS Pod is up to 170, but it's my party and I can ignore the numbers and play whatever music I like, and I will…
