If you want a list of Digital's achievements in the D&B game, well, unlucky, there just isn't room for them all here. We can give you the headlines though: part of the original rave soundsystem scene since day one, nearly two decades of production experience, releases on virtually every well-respected label including Metalheadz, Reinforced, 31 and his own Function and Phantom Audio imprints. And now his uncompromising dubwise style has arrived on Technique.

First we land “In the Basement”. A sparse and spacey rhythm track marks out the intro as dark chords fade in and out of focus. Then Digital shows the true meaning of dub as he twists a powerful sub-bass injection around unrelenting half-time beats. This is true post-modernist jungle, referencing the past's blueprint while remaining steadfastly current.

“New Age Jungle Funk” breathes new life into some more classic junglist tropes. There's percussion pushed to the boundary of aggressive distortion, raggamuffin stabs and rough-hewn bass. The monumental weight of the low-end is only accentuated by the shimmering glimmers of hi-hat and cymbal that weave their way through the mix. This is dark, late-night music for when it's time for the set to get serious.

The package is finished off with three mixes of “Midnight Moves”, featuring the vocals of New Zealand's Stepa. Her voice combines the ability to effortlessly float over the punch of the beats and bass with an intensity and attack all of its own. The original delivers the stripped-to-the-bone rawness we expect from Digital's D&B, with the jagged landscape punctuated by the extra texture Stepa brings.

Meanwhile, TREi steps up on remix duties. The New Zealand DJ and producer has already proven his credentials with releases on labels as varied as Viper, Commercial Suicide and Shogun and consolidated his position with a second album last year. His “Midday” mix draws out the melodic underpinning of “Midnight Moves” while maintaining the percussive integrity at its heart. Then his “Midnight” mix takes things into the big room, delivering a mighty build-up and drop that's bound to get the party moving.

Anyone who knows their bass music will need no persuasion to find room in their set list for this release. Digital's name alone is all the seal of approval that a true aficionado will need.

10 years ago Horizons Music released their first ever piece of music, a track going by the name of '10 steps', produced by Skitty. Since that epoch making moment, the label has evolved into a staple of the Drum & Bass scene, becoming a byword for consistency and quality in the process. It is therefore fitting that ten years on, some of the labels regulars come together to produce a masterful 14 track album, that encompasses everything Horizons is about.
 
A quick flick through the roster for the album tells you everything you need to know. Stalwarts of the scene Digital and Spirit make both individual and collective appearances, providing their trademark blends of invention and raw energy. Break delivers a quintessential effort and Jubei steps up to bring his own relick to Skitty's '10 steps'. Another remix of Horizon's inaugural release comes courtesy of label regulars 'Amoss – doing the original justice superbly.
 
Amoss also take up their place beside label favourite Nickbee in taking on individual efforts, whilst artists as well renowned as DLR, Need for Mirrors, Mako & Hydro, Silent Witness, Detail and Scar make a strong a line up as you are liable to see on any release this year.
 
Musically, it is Horizons all over. From the Thunderous crunch of 'Outta Time' and 'In the Moment' to the deeper cuts of 'Piano Licks and 'Fields', this is an ode to quality. Add in the brilliant experimentation of music like 'Organic' and 'Keep me in the Loop' and you have an album that is worthy of representing 10 years of Horizons Music.

He has been releasing records since the early nineties on labels such as Metalheadz, Reinforced Recordings, Timeless Recordings, Creative Source, Photek Productions, Function, and many more. As well as solo releases under various names (such as S.O.S. & Natural Mystic), he also has recorded with Spirit under their monniker: Phantom Audio.

Tempo Records picked three of Digital’s latest creations, “Logged In” is all about spacefunk, deep bleep-ish atmospheres with a nod to Detroit Techno combined with a harsh rolling Amen drum. “Africa” combines Reggae influences with deep subs, “Fire” might be Digital’s most minimal production to date but don’t be fooled by it’s deep rhythm structure and intricate drum programming.

Digital makes a welcome return to Horizons with an intricate 5 track release, spanning 2 vinyl releases and a digital exclusive.

Death Wish is a deeply eerie yet enthralling track. Minimalist tribal percussion, interlaced with a chilling vocal provide a stellar accompaniment to a sonorous bass that rises and falls in a wonderfully controlled manner. A brooding track by all accounts.

My World opens with ethereal pads, backed by a melodic and wishful vocal. The undulating bass line underpins the tune as a whole, allowing subtle drum work and splashes of fx and further sumptuous pad work to really shine through. Majestically melancholic.

Damage sees Digital team up successfully with Outrage to create a futuristic cut of Drum & Bass. Ignoring convention, the combination of bleeps, open snares twist and turn over another subtle yet highly effective sub layer – culminating in what is definitely one for the connoisseurs of the art.

Joker features Spirit and Nomine. Moving in a slightly different direction to the other tracks – Joker is epitomised by growling reeces, distorted samples and driving amens that course over the other elements. Deceptively heavy, whilst losing none of the musicality and experimentation that defines this release.

Digital exclusive Cold Case is one vinyl heads will be ruing. Taught kicks lay down a stern beat whilst thunder quite literally rolls around. More delicate percussive work leads into a hugely organic bass line, sitting just underneath the main body of the track, adding carefully construed layers to the piece.

Digital's delve into somewhat unknown territory is marked out by subtle touches everywhere. Clearly the work of a man who knows his craft well, the 5 tracks all demonstrate a willingness to experiment and push boundaries, whilst staying true to what lovers of the music want to hear.

Stephen Carr a.k.a. Digital is one of the UK’s well-respected & inspirational drum and bass producers with a career spanning 20yrs plus and a seminal catalogue of original & innovative releases to date. 

His signature bass-lines & radicalized dubbed out sounds reach back to his childhood seeing his Father run his own sound-system for nearly thirty years in Ipswich, UK. The moniker ‘Digital’ was given to Steve by the Ashanti Sound system, immediately recognizing his technical ability operating a sound system at the age of 14 while also relating the moniker to the future, his youth and the emergence of the digital age. It wasn’t long before Digital used his dad's sound-system on his own, in 1991, with the ‘rave scene’ growing in & around Ipswich he started to hire-out the system to various promoters, noticeably Danny C who he befriended through their love of music and raving. This is when he really got interested in the rave scene and its music triggering his curiosity that drew his attention to production…
