In this episode, Digital PR students Linden Miller and Jessica Urig will analyze the trend to make Instagram casual again and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected this trend. In this episode, Zaria Moore and Kimmy Daniels discuss the current social media impact of Instagram. This app is favored amongst millennials and Gen Z. As it serves to be a popular social media application, businesses are capitalizing on this channel to promote content. However, this app is notorious for editing pictures that can distort one’s image.  
In this episode, we dissect the long-standing effects Instagram has on public relations practitioners. Marketing on Instagram has become widespread for any type of business. The issue that arises from this is the question of real versus fake. If a company hires a brand ambassador to sell their product, but the user is fake, the company is painted in a negative light. Our episode contains real-life examples of this type of experience.

Do We Still Like Instagram?

In today’s episode, Digital PR students and hosts Andrew, Griffin and Ray talk social media and musicians. 

Over the last decade, musicians have come to use social media to take advantage of trends, collaborate with influencers and become influencers themselves. Our hosts reflect on some of the past successes and failures of musicians using social media from the widely successful 2016 Mannequin Challenge to Rita Ora’s 2014 failed attempt at a viral tweet on Halloween. What can we learn about PR professionals about viral trends, working with influencers, and how artists become influencers themselves? The hosts explore these questions and more. 

Also in this episode, the hosts discuss how musicians have come to use social media during the pandemic. Virality and influencers are becoming increasingly important, particularly with the almost complete shutdown of live concerts and events for over a year in the United States and many other countries. From going viral on TikTok to “live concerts” on Twitch and video games, there’s been a lot of development and changes in how artists can share their music and keep themselves connected with their fans. Keeping Up With The Press

When Taylor Swift's music was sold out from underneath her, she was devastated. All of the lyrics that she wrote at 15 with her pen and paper were now under the ownership of popular manager Scooter Braun. 

Upon learning this, Taylor Swift got to work and started re-recording these popular albums with each song title including  "(Taylor's Version)" at the end. The re-recordings sound nearly identical to the original tracks with the exception of better production and a more mature voice.  

On Nov. 19 of this year, Taylor re-released Red, her popular album originally released in 2012. This is the second album that Taylor re-recorded and re-released with new artwork giving her 100% ownership. 

Taylor has utilized social media in such a strategic way to keep fans excited about an album that was originally released 10 years ago. Whether it's TikTok trends, Starbucks collaborations, or short films, Red (Taylor's Version) is the topic of conversation everywhere.

Taylor Swift's Re-Release of Red (Taylor's Version)

With the COVID-19 pandemic putting everyone indoors for the majority of 2020, began to watch online content more than ever. During this period, Twitch.tv, a live streaming website that had been around for just under a decade at this point, exploded in popularity.

 

In this episode of the Digital PR Podcast, co-hosts Ben Vrobel and Troy Heatwole discuss Twitch.tv, a popular live streaming platform that grew substantially over the COVID-19 pandemic. We start by sharing our experiences with the platform, then go into the history of twitch and how it grew into the livestreaming behemoth we know today. After that we go into the different campaigns that were hosted on twitch, and how successful they were and what that means to PR professionals.

Twitch: How Livestreaming has been Revolutionized by Gaming Influencers

In this episode of Digital Public Relations, Haley and Niki take a deep dive into influencer marketing. We talk about influencers and certain things they do that compel us to like or what keeps us scrolling.

Controversial Influencers: Trisha Paytas and the Frenemies Podcast

In this episode of The Music Sesh, Avery Savage, and Alexandra Austin talk about TikTok within the music industry. Throughout the podcast, Avery and Alex discuss how people find music today, what Tiktok is, examples of TikTok artists who’ve found fame on the app, and the public relations implementations of social media and the music industry. 
Today, most music is easily found on TikTok- which is a short-form video platform that people can share videos on. TikTok is one of the fastest growing platforms out there to date. Many musicians stream their music on other platforms too, but go to TikTok as a means to build up a following and truly promote promote their music to a fan base- both new and old. 
During the episode, Avery and Alex discuss artists who have risen to fame through TikTok. They talk about the artist Lil Nas X who rose to fame after posting himself singing “Old Town Road” on the platform. The two also discuss the band Honey Revenge and how TikTok has made the group blossom.
Avery and Alex spend some time discussing the public relations implementations of TikTok within the music industry too. The two share information on how musicians can reach a wide audience as well as ways to increase awareness of a musicans brand.

Fashion Rewind: Fashion Nostalgia and Social Media

When it comes to staying up to date with celebrities, we have seen a movement from tabloid news to social media since 2016. Since then, celebrities have begun to share their news on social media rather than relying on news organizations to always disperse news for them. In this episode, Taylor Cook and Eduardo Strobel dissect celebrities’ public relations tactics on social media. 

Celebrity Tea comments on the shift in how celebrity public relations function and provides positive and negative instances of their public relations on social media.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’s apology video after showing support for the harassment case against Danny Masterson caused serious backlash on social media. We take a deep dive into other PR tactics they could have employed to handle the situation.

We also compare social media accounts of other celebrities, such as Taylor Swift and Nina Dobrev. Looking at the differences between these celebrities’ posts and their engagement with the public. Our goal is to examine each celebrities use of online listening, organic social media, and overall PR knowledge to leverage their social media platforms in their favor.

Jill Golden and Jess Skitzki discuss newsjacking and how it can be great PR for a brand, or a terrible mistake if not executed properly. We discuss some well-known brands including Dunkin Donuts, Kit Kat and KFC and their newsjacking successes with popular events and social trends including the Royal Wedding, the gold and white dress and the Area 51 raid. We also share some feelings on one brand that made quite the mistake when creating a newsjacking tweet. Newsjacking: the good, the bad and the ugly

Some organizations have social media ads that tend to get people to visit their website, but have different messages on the website compared to the ad. Just Fab, Shoe Dazzle and Fabletics are few examples of such brands. Even though they have concise messaging now, the damage to brand trust has already been done. Not every organization is lucky to get away with misleading SM ads; Fenty faced a lawsuit for such an act.
