"Chicago native Justin Aulis Long discovered his fascination for uncanny music at an early age when his mother entrusted him with her record collection that spanned from UK punk to American dance. This  served as a gateway, stimulating his journey into the sonic vortex. As a child of Medusa’s on Sheffield, Long gained a higher level of musical education. His weekly pilgrimages to this venue’s all-ages hedonistic dance parties supplied a compelling musical concoction of acid house, UK bleep, industrial and new wave. Possessed by these unorthodox forms of music, Long purchased his first set of turntables and began to collect 12-inch singles from local record shops. Though his intentions were solely to pander to his musical appetite in the privacy of his bedroom, this acquisition proved to be the genesis of a voyage that continues to present him with new challenges that are met with an unforgiving dogmatic approach.

Long cut his teeth during the early 90’s at many of Chicagos Infamous DIY and underground warehouse raves. pulling selections from a variety of his musical influences and interests. Eventually graduating to take residencies at many of the cities established club venues and landing a residency at Smart Bar where he is currently the longest consecutive resident."

Our podcast series now turns to the vast and much mythologised record collection of Detroit native Carlos Souffront. Carlos often doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, except from those in the know, who accept and understand that he is a gourmet selector who reaches for only the finest records. As likely to reach for ambient and post punk as he is indie rock, experimental, house or techno, Carlos is a key part of the Interdimensional Transmissions parties in his home town and reportedly has one of the most bad ass collection of acid records in all the world.  The mix he turns in here is a freewheeling yet coherent round through many disparate sounds and scenes and needs to be heard to be believed.

San Francisco based since 2011, Carlos Souffront has been wowing crowds with his profound love of music, adventurous selections and creative and thoughtful approach to DJing since the mid 1990s. Renowned as a DJs DJ Souffront gained his first residency in ‘95 at Zoot’s Coffeehouse in Detroit and has gone on to be closely associated with a number of legendary US parties including Interdimensional Transmissions’ infamous No Way Back events, The Bunker in New York and San Francisco’s Honey Soundsystem. Proclamations visible on The Internet name Souffront as possessing the greatest collection of acid records on the planet whilst The Bunker’s Derek Plaslaiko states that Souffrant is the greatest DJ in the solar system. So, for our latest podcast we’re undoubtedly in very good hands indeed. We managed to share some words with Carlos about his current modus operandi, his style of DJing and how he’s managed to keep it fresh from those first humble beginnings in Detroit city through to today.

The first third of the mix sees Forest Drive West running at dancehall tempo, delivering ultra-heavy dubwise riddims which will delight anyone who’s dug the techno dancehall sound of labels like Gobstopper and Livity Sound in recent years. The mid-section takes the listener even deeper, dubbing out in the African Head Charge style, before Forest Drive West emerges with some thrilling experimental jungle in the mix’s second half.
