Hailing all the way from the central mountains of Colombia, Lopar ( @lopar_music ) brings deep and luscious sounds from the city of Manizales. A talented DJ in many genres, he navigates a range of styles and moods from ambient, dub and minimal to  deep & hypnotic techno & dnb. 

He began his career as a professional DJ in 2015 at Academia Decibel (Intelligent Division) in Medellin, Colombia and now is involved in local efforts as part of the "Natural" collective in Manziales to bring like-minded sounds and artists to the city, playing alongside talents like Anthony Linell & Polygonia.

Ran weaves so many melodies, textures, and soft drums in this inimitably beautiful, smart, and jazzy mixtape that brings me to a contemplative state, one where I am holding the energy of those diasporic Coreans in my community, and around the world, who I am connected to through the gift of this mixtape series, and beyond, through our shared ancestral histories of being Corean at all. Within that energy glows the rhythmic echo of oneness with all colonized people today and from all time.

With this edition of the saekdong cover typical of Diasporic Corean Mixtapes, I wanted to bring in the colorway of the Palestinian flag, as well as the net texture present in the keffiyeh, intermingling with the motif of the Korean Unification flag. 

To me, this symbolizes the many parallels between Palestine and Korea, particularly the postwar north of Korea today known as the DPRK. It was the same year of 1948 in which Korea was split into two by the US Military, that on the other side of the globe, Palestine was being pillaged and carved up as well. As in Korea, where today families including those of my paternal grandfather remain separated by an arbitrary militarized border, so too do Palestinians remain exiles from their own villages, farms, cities, ancestral homelands. 

Throughout the 1960s, the leadership of north Korea maintained correspondence with the Palestinian resistance, and even shared military strategies and traded arms. And today, north Korea continues to be maligned, its government borne of anti-colonial resistance labeled as "rogue" by the imperial powers, as much as Palestinian resistance movements are labeled terrorists. All the while, north Korea has suffered from inhumane US embargoes that block essential medicine and agricultural resources that have killed thousands of people, contemporaneously with Israeli embargoes on Gaza that deprive children of basic human necessities like water and flour.

So despite the controversial nature of the Korean Unification flag, which is representative of a persecuted political ideology in south Korea, where pro-reunification activists are frequently harassed and incarcerated under the anti-communist National Security Law, it grounds me. The blue One Korea nestled inside the keffiyeh reminds me of not my roots as a Corean person on that tiny peninsula we call our ancestral home, whether we are from the north, the south, or in the diaspora, but also of our solidarity and connectedness to all colonized people who struggle and resist everywhere.

As we yearn to see a Corea that is one, so we envision a free Palestine from the river to the sea.

Ran Park is a home-taught pianist, self-taught composer, and an ever-evolving experimentalist. Joyful contradictions run throughout her music, from romantic and impressionist classical to free jazz, gospel, Korean folk, and notions of pop. 

With all this unhinged curiosity as her energy source, Ran’s mission is to say ‘yes’ to the child in us; yes to embodying fuller expressions of the many identities we carry. Doing so, she argues, is a necessary step towards generational and collective healing.
