In the cold vastness of day, I think of last summer and of its taste. Sickly sweet, like pink bubble gum. The heavy drip of clarity beats its way through the murk and runs down the back of my throat. I miss the taste, I miss the heat, I miss the rivers and the trees. All I have now are these tulips. A bunch of tulips on my lap and the occasional glimpse of reality shooting past me from outside the window. A fleeting glimpse of paradise.

The pull and the push. A big knot in my stomach. My phone beeps and the motion is lost. The wheels begin to rust. The walls stare at me, the ceiling stares at me, the other passengers stare at me, the driver stares at me, the open window stares at me. I am happy for the breeze. So are the tulips. It reminds us there’s a world outside all of this. A little peek at a better place. It brings us hope and makes us giddy. My beautiful giddy tulips, please forgive me. I should never have brought you here.

The floor stares, the people stare, the tulips stare, from my lap they stare. Outside the window...I see my bones pirouette on their spool. This causes me to jolt a little. Consciousness creeping in, tapping at the door, dragging me out of my stupor. Me and the tulips, together we stare.

Swallow hard shards of the mirror: clot throat dull pulse churning ridged trapped.

It’s dark now. I must have dozed off. Everything is coated in a thin layer of silvery moonlight. Everything looks dead, dead as bones. Even the velveteen tulips have lost their lustre. The sky is dense with electricity. The unholy black tide waits to engulf us all. The tulips cry for water.

A dreaded glow emitted from my phone screen. Framed by the blackened innards of the transport. Silhouetted things, ghastly and evil that loom over me. Strange world, grotesque and unrecognizable. Noises creeping in through the cracks, shoveled into my ears until my head is full and I begin to hiss like a deflating balloon. The ‘ratatat’ of fingers on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys on keys. Nightmarish repetition.

The after-glow. The journey. The tulips withering. Violently, violently. Quietly, quietly. The distant glow of streetlights and tenement blocks. The inevitability of destination.

Nina delivered her musical interpretation of the Georgian medieval epic poem written by Shota Rustaveli in 12th century – The Knight in The Panters Skin – (‘ვეფხისტყაოსანი’). This is the story about romantic love, friendship, sincerity, dedication, equality between men and women, which happens in fictional places of Arabia and India.

Petersburg recluse Vladimir Karpov is an electronic musician and producer under the pseudonym X.Y.R. Many of his works are able to tune in to a meditative mood, and to completely immerse a sensitive listener in a state of hypnosis.

More than ten years ago Vladimir got his first synthesizer - the Soviet "formant", from which his musical career began. In his work, he prefers soft timbres, wavy ambient and the pacifying mystery of the New Age, and his track record, for example, includes releases on the California label Not Not Fun or the Oakland Constellation Tatsu.

Karpov's synthesizer melodies are distorted in a mirage landscape, and the enveloping vibrations emanating from all guitar gadgets twist like snakes in the air. Unsurprisingly, the abbreviation X.Y.R. stands for the Temple of Solitary Reflection - this is how the hero of "Dead Souls" landowner Manilov calls the homeless pavilion in which he indulges in lonely dreams. Likewise, the music of the Petersburg recluse, inspiring, soothing, and sometimes disturbing, has a solitary character.

This mix was recorded at Ahola Festival in 2021.

In the realm of De Kat Memwa series, the musical milieu has undergone a remarkable transformation since 2018. The rare beats and curious chords have evolved into a more intricate and sophisticated soundscape, intent on stimulating an array of emotions and cognitive responses, from tranquil reveries to incisive musings.

Despite these changes, one aspect remains constant: the meticulous curation of guests. Each selector invited to join the series represents a fount of inspiration, overflowing with boundless talent and expertise, all of which I deeply admire and hold in the highest esteem.

So I'm extremely happy that today we have a guest mix recorded by Frank from Berlin. A man of many guises and talents. You may know him as Frans Æmbient or A Method To Exist. In our series, unveils his latest sonic endeavour T.V.S.T. (TV IS TERRIBLE) project in which he constructs a hauntological reality with pearls from the scrapyard. 

Frank is also the visionary mastermind behind the experimental label and mix series Kashual Plastik, a cherished haven for adventurous researchers, outsiders and mavericks alike. 

Moreover, he curates the musical palette at the Arkaoda Berlin, one of the world's most daring and multidimensional venues.
