Mad Wilco

Guitarist, author, and composer Adil Rizki is widely recognized as one of the most notable figures in contemporary Moroccan music from his generation. Early on he was captivated by 60s and 70s rock music, soul, funk, pop, and blues. Moroccan of origin, he grew up immersed in North African music such as  Gnawa and Moroccan rhythmical music which resulted in him later studying tribal music. He then began to be influenced by elements of a variety of tribal and traditional music styles from Eastern Europe, India, Africa, and the Arab world that included jazz, classical, contemporary, and ‘world music’.

At age 21 he was the youngest session studio guitarist in Morocco that allowed him to record, collaborate, and write for countless famous Moroccan singers. At this time Adil was also the winner of Tremplin Rock Contest with his first rock band Dust and Bones. After enjoying success and a national tour with his next fusion band Kingston,  Adil then went on to create one of Morocco’s most well known fusion bands. Dayzine – which means ‘beautiful day’- was called upon to perform at multiple national festivals including opening for Mokhtar Samba and the legendary Joe Zawinul of the Weather Report band at the International Essaouira Festival.

In 2006 Adil represented Morocco as the Ambassador of Art and Music at the Belgium European International Youth Event (BIJ). He followed this with an Italian tour and participation in multiple international arts festivals that took him from Essaouira and Casablanca to Senegal, Belgium, and Italy. His world music experience and lead him to release his first album. Entitle Kourda, this first album was based on his research of Morcoccan traditional music coupled with Adil’s unique fusion approach. At the time he also worked as a scoring artist with several movie studios and advertising agencies.

His vision and contributions to mix modern contemporary music and a blending of traditional African music with international genres. While in Boston, he began collaborating and performing with fusion bands Club Delf and Atlas Soul. He intrigued the local music scene with the Gnawa style of music played on the African bass instrument, sentir.

Adil is currently composing new songs for an upcoming album. He is also working on putting together a new fusion band called The Voodoo Foundation.
