Our premiere today comes to you from an absolute legend and storied producer in the house world, @dj-aakmael. Aakmael has been releasing heater and heater for well over the last decade for respected dance labels like Unified Records, Kolours, Church UK, as well as his own imprint Unxpozd Entertainment. Preserving that deep underground sound alongside as he describes, "more raw, new nostalgia with that lite-jazz glaze," Aakmael's newest outing, Tales from the Deep Side, arrives on @axeonwax-records, and what a fitting home it is. This EP is about as earnest as it gets, mixing just the right samples and chords with the relentless shuffle that Aakmael has made his own since 2004.

A1 is titled appropriately enough, Deep Side. From the moment it kicks off it's not hard to see what selectors such as Kai Alce, Deejay Astral, and Chaos in the CBD see in Aakmael's work that makes it so enticing. A fully jazzed out lead line attacks from the get go; as the track builds steam, so to does it's percussive heft. Hisses, clicks, and swung hats gather like a snowball rolling down a hill---all of the sudden this track is massive and you barely see it coming. Panning synth flutters enter the mix around the 2 min mark, locking in the spacier elements of the track before it picks up steam once more, galloping into its final stretch with sparkling vocal cuts and glistening sheen fully in tow.

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, DJ Aakmael's profile has steadily risen over the last decade thanks to his supremely classy deep house sounds. Recent times have seen him release excellent material on the likes of Freerange Records, Axe On Wax, Church and Release Sustain, and now he makes his debut on Monologues Records with two deep cuts. 'Dahlin' is a string-laden stomper while 'Organik' is more of a synth-driven jam with some of his exquisite trademark keys improvisation. Leon Revol returns to the label after his well-received 'Embers' EP to rework 'Dahlin' in wonderfully introspective, hazy style, while label boss Ben Gomori steps up for a chunked-up, darkly-tinged rework of 'Organik'.

Ten years after his first release, UK artist Lone is putting out his first ever commercial mix CD. His entry into the celebrated DJ-kicks series lands on 29th September and features four of his own new and exclusive tracks. Today he shares the first exclusive track ‘Saturday Night’: a swirling, pad-laced groove full of summery warmth. 

Born Matt Cutler and raised in Nottingham, Lone has emerged as a standout artist over the last decade. Starting out making hip hop, he has distinctly evolved with each new release. Yet whether making house, breakbeat or jungle, his music always remains identifiable thanks to its bright melodic colours. 

This mix represents Lone as a producer: it starts out with the hip hop of his roots, then moves through some of the music of his childhood and on to a range of his enduring influences. Along the way, he stitches in his own newly produced sounds. “I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone with this,”: he says. “I’m so used to programming my own material on my own albums, that’s sort of how I approached this one.” Purposefully mixed in “a loose, rough way” in his living room on a pair of CDJs, the idea was to make listeners feel like there were in there with him. It’s designed for dreamy late night listening, or intimate headphone sessions, and “plays out a bit like a weird midnight radio show: it’s purposefully all over the place, dreamy and trippy, so you can zone in and out.”

Lone’s DJ-kicks very much feels alive, lived-in and authentic. It is a hugely personal view into his unique musical world and marks another landmark entry into !K7’s long running series.
