DI MARTINELLI - You Could Be My Lover feat. Sophie Galpin (Extended Mix)

With The Cycle, DI MARTINELLI consolidates his status as Antwerp’s underground DJ & producer. Out on Clare Records, this track is meant to be played on repeat. Not because that’s a promo thing to say, but because of its nature. It’s called The Cycle, a title that both winks at its lyrics and the way the song is structured.

Following singles Tides and Msaada, DI MARTINELLI releases The Cycle, a track that has been through some cycles itself. DI MARTINELLI: “I had written it as the basis for another release, that got shelved—but not forgotten. I picked it up again during the pandemic. After letting it sit for so long, I still felt the structure and the melody had the makings of a great track.” 

Everything is cycles
That great track consists of a moody start, which quickly builds up to a fast-paced pulse. The lyrics and beats work together to underline the track’s message: everything is cycles. Everything keeps on returning. The words do, the musical themes do, and everything in life does—which means in the end, there aren’t any winners, nor are there losers. A mature stance, that can be felt throughout the track. DI MARTINELLI deconstructs and layers the vocals, making The Cycle feel impatient and full of resolve at the same time.

While repetitive, The Cycle somehow feels novel at every turn. Maybe it’s the surprising (but dim) metallic din of the synths. Maybe it’s the reverberating vocals. Maybe it’s that double-time beat that eggs on the track straight to its bittersweet end. More likely, what you’re hearing is a producer who has found a way to blend elegance with electronics, capturing a club feel as well as a certain serenity.

You Could Be My Lover (Boys Holding Hands Remix)

With just two minutes and thirty-six seconds, this summer club track is designed to get your party started. Just Vibe is a beach track with a nillies feel and feathery vocals that show no pretence. The same is true for the lyrics—with a boy, a girl and a pool as main characters, they let you fill in the rest of the story. The setting could be Miami, maybe the Caribbean. But it doesn’t matter, really: this is the kind of dance that will suit any sundown situation. Straightforward, upbeat, to be supplemented with the clink of ice cubes. It’s good, clean fun and Di Martinelli’s way of extending an invitation. “Pour a gin and juice to feel lighter”. So, shall we?

Belgium-based talent DI MARTINELLI twists HELMUT’s recent anthem ‘Fur’ into a dark, hypnotic club tool. The original guitar chords merge with rolling ominous bass, hazy vocals, haunting synths and tribal undertones. While the vocals stay put, the lyrics are downplayed and fuzzy, leaving lots of room for the reverberating sounds to fill in the blanks, HELMUT’s voice ricocheting from the walls, reflected and refracted. 

However layered, this elongated mix maintains the careful pace of the original track, working instead with newly invented arrangements that go right down to the core of the tune. Thorough, yet subtle.

In adding a pulse that oozes Berlin nightlife, DI MARTINELLI creates a subdued-sounding dancefloor drone out of the poppier original. Somehow, this Antwerp prodigy manages to blend a psychedelic desert feel with a dark trance the shade of pre-dawn drifting through forgotten alleyways and backstreets. It’s 4 AM, the club is still coursing through your veins, but you’re on the way home and wanting to stretch the moment. This right here is your perfect soundtrack.

The sound of the blackest pages in the history book

 When music delves into national history and halts on its blackest of pages, an enthralling magic sometimes happens. For his brand-new EP by the title of MSAADA, Di Martinelli chose to have a captivating voice relate a story not often told. Or at least, not often enough. After the release of Sensitivity on N.E.W.S., Di Martinelli strikes again with this EP that glimpses shards of the past in a sound that speaks of true electronic mastery.

This time around, a dark, grainy voice timbre serves as the perfect instrument to tackle the hairy chapter of Belgium’s colonial past. One that still haunts us, as recently demonstrated by a few youths who, sadly, thought it necessary to harass party-goers at the last edition of Pukkelpop. 

The lyrics of MSAADA evoke the guilt that lingers long after our country’s heinous crimes towards a population that had no means of defending itself. The slow pulse of the synth-laden track culminates in a statement that reminds one of the cyclical nature of history: “They used to name it lesser days / But lesser days would mean they’d fade / The Caesar shifts faces / But who rules a nation?” You won’t be surprised to learn ‘msaada’ means ‘help’ in Swahili. 

The EP’s shifty mood is continued in TIDES, a second track that divides itself in two equally haunting versions. The techno feel perseveres yet deepens and evolves into a feverish tune with an overall detached, isolated feel, nonetheless whipping itself up to danceability near the end of the four-minute ride through brazen country. The dub version paraphrases this DNA while digging even deeper into the song’s jagged rhythms.

Making music is like climbing mountains. You’re headed to a summit, but you don’t know how long the journey will take and where it might meander. Ableton feels like that, too, when you click to open a new ‘Untitled’ project. You start the day by putting on your hiking shoes and get all your gear ready. You layer. You loop. You follow the route you’ve chosen earlier—until you hit a roadblock and the map’s no use anymore. So, MacGyver, what do you do? Will you press Command + S(ave) and find your way up later? Or will it be Command + Q(uit)? 

With this new EP, DI MARTINELLI decided to press on. “When making Tides, the second track of my Msaada EP, I wound up treading into new territory, influenced by (French) Techno. With Alta Viskosa, I decided to further explore that path.” In fact, it’s two paths the Antwerp-based artist and producer is talking about. Two sides of the same medal, if you will.
