The fifth song on Girl Math is a track called Ramen Noodles !

This song was originally going to be on a different album, but I was too impatient to wait to finish the other album (which is going to be a odd time signature/microtonal lofi album! Check out Off the Grid when it actually exists!). It technically isn't fast dance music like the other tracks on Girl Math, but it's my album and I make the arbitrary rules.  

Instead of using odd time signatures as the rhythmic foundation, the time signatures in this piece are more like punctuation marks.  The main theme is in 9/4, but I think of it as a 4/4 + 4/4 + 1/4, where the 1/4 is more like a fermata than anything else.  Later, there's a section where we alternate between a 6/4 and 7/4 feel, but again, the 7/4 is just a bar of 6/4 that has a beat of breathing space.

My favorite part occurs about 3 quarters through the song.  Before it starts, I have a 4 bar phrase where the last bar is the same as the first bar, just pushed forward an eigth note.  Then, I bring the phrase back, but, by using a bar of 9/8, I'm able a new repetition of the phrase as the end of the phrase.  It's kinda hard to explain in text, but it's like the feeling of hearing a three bar phrase when you expect a four bar phrase, but even weirder.

The eigth track on Girl Math, and the inspiration for the album as a whole, is a track called Take 5 On The Floor, whose name is a combination of the jazz song Take 5 and the idea of a 4 on the Floor Beat.

My goal for this song was to make a traditional club beat that one could only dance to if they weren't thinking about it, so I ended up writing it completely in 5/4.  I wrote the intro to be like the intro to the Bad Apple remix that everyone knows, but since it's in 5/4, it's really difficult to figure out where the chords should come in on a first listen, because we automatically assume it's in 4/4.

Harmonically, things are relatively simple.  The main theme switches between Cmin7 to Bbmaj7, and then for the bridge, we go from Cmin7 to Amin7.  I really like chordal planing :)
