Copying bootleg cassette tapes from Eastern Europe, lining up at record stores to grab that government-sanctioned compilation LP, glued to TV sets waiting for reruns of that one “live” performance, pins, posters, articles, gossip, endless arguments about musical relevance of this strange phenomenon. Melodic and instrumental hooks galore, androgynous vocals, over-the-top melodrama, yet complete disregard for English grammar, overwhelming simplicity and repetitiveness, all found a way to the hearts (and dancing feet) of millions, and they remain, to this day, a household name and an occasional guilty pleasure.
