and so it came to pass,

that while i ran from the untold horror lurking in the fog,

i became aware of a constant voice from the heavens 
which droned on and on, 

a prayer

for my salvation.

i became attached to these words
and memorized them in time,
unaware that what i took to heart
bore me a burden 
which ground my running to a halt.

my head still bobbing at a runner's pace,
with eyes shut and fists balled
i stood rocking back and forth,
imagining myself to be in a sprint.

and it was only after perhaps
days 
months
years
or eons had passed
that i stopped moving
and the prayer words lost their effect.

a long silence played the role of intermission
and the winding of a music box debuted the second act.

then
a melody of supreme sweetness was brought to my ears.

this too, 
i set in stone upon my heart
until so strongly was it a part of me,
that even in death
i should rise to that score
if only but to honor its grace
by listening.

it told me to look
and so i did,
and was immediately blinded by a light
so complete in its breadth
and pure in its quality
that it was as suffocating as the fog it displaced.

but as my eyes adjusted,
an indescribable beauty
infinitely unfurled itself to me.

and though moved not a single inch, i was worlds away.
