Tarab, the ecstatic feeling associated with listening to and playing great music, is a fundamental characteristic in many varieties of Arab music. In this program, we explore tarab with special guest UCLA ethnomusicology professor A.J. Racy. Racy draws on his lifelong study of music and musicians, and also his insights as a virtuoso performer on the nay flute and the buzuq. Racy guides us through the experiences of listeners and players, providing deep insight into many varieties of tarab. We hear works by A.J. Racy, Sabah Fakhri and Ensemble Al-Kindi of Syria.

The Chesterfield-based bomba/plena band is throwing a "Tropical Christmas show at Richmond Music Hall that highlights the Puerto Rican traditions of Christmas. We also welcome Reese Williams, Chief Communications Officer & Production Coordinator of Shockoe Records. The Richmond based Shockoe has released a new Christmas compilation, with proceeds going to Feed More. It was written long ago and passed down by the prophets that in the coming years our darkest days that a whistling woodsman's song would be heard from within the black and hoary forest. It beckons us to join him in a quivering songbird haunting, a faint light upon a dark and winding path. It's a 11:59PM all over the world and here's the Whistling Woodsman's rendition of this Joy Division classic, "The Eternal."

Spanglish Fly is the band spearheading a Latin boogaloo revival in New York and around the world.  To record their second Electric Cowbell release, they went to Brooklyn's renown Truth & Soul Studio and cut two tunes old-school-style, straight to analog tape, with Truth & Soul producers Jeff Silverman and Clay Holley manning the boards and later handling the mixing.  The results?  Two original tunes that sound like a 1960s Latin boogaloo party.  "Me Gusta Mi Bicicleta" is a tribute to velocipedes everywhere and a boogaloo magnum opus: cha-cha with a backbeat featuring a hard-hitting Latin funk coda, its exuberant horn arrangement recalling the music of Luis Aviles and the Latin Blues Band.  On the B-side is "The Po-po," a (mostly) instrumental that laments getting busted for petty offenses in the New York City streets. It starts with a plena party and shifts into a riff reminiscent of the classic boogaloos of Johnny Colón, before heading into straight 1960s pop territory (with a sly nod to KRS-One's "Sound of the Police" thrown in). Together these tracks stand in the boogaloo tradition while updating the genre for a new generation of partygoers.
