Tarab, the ecstatic feeling associated with listening to and playing great music, is a fundamental characteristic in many varieties of Arab music. In this program, we explore tarab with special guest UCLA ethnomusicology professor A.J. Racy. Racy draws on his lifelong study of music and musicians, and also his insights as a virtuoso performer on the nay flute and the buzuq. Racy guides us through the experiences of listeners and players, providing deep insight into many varieties of tarab. We hear works by A.J. Racy, Sabah Fakhri and Ensemble Al-Kindi of Syria.

A BIG HO-HO-HO! It's Open Source RVA's annual YULELOG edition, featuring seasonal interviews, readings, skits, and songs from the Source family and friends. Among our guests: Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and Tito Sanabria, of the band Kadencia. The Chesterfield-based bomba/plena band is throwing a "Tropical Christmas show at Richmond Music Hall that highlights the Puerto Rican traditions of Christmas. We also welcome Reese Williams, Chief Communications Officer & Production Coordinator of Shockoe Records. The Richmond based Shockoe has released a new Christmas compilation, with proceeds going to Feed More. PLUS we have Christmas-y contributions from Reese, as well as Dina Weinstein, Tony Jordan, Melissa Vaughn, Goad Gatsby, Olivia Harrison, producer Krysti Albus, production assistant Chuck Moore, Don Harrison, and the rest of the Open Source RVA Holiday Art Players. In Mali they found inspiration in the form of Khaira Arby, a legendary Malian singer, and out of their epic journey the tracks on this record were born. Colin Stetson (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver) brings the baritone sax to this big mix making the perfect counterpoint to Khaira’s impassioned wailing. You’ve never heard anything like this and we consider one of the freshest releases of 2011. Too often the pairings of musicians from two distinctly different regions on the globe come off as goofy “world music” exploitive efforts but this collaboration simply exudes heartfelt musical joy.
