Guattari's Radio Screenplay for The Infra-Quark Universe

‘Sounds of the Modern Hospital' - Volume 1 in the Sonograph Sound Effects Series - is a long-playing sound effects record in a limited edition of 250 copies. The record was produced by Mark Vernon during a two year period as digital artist in residence at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland.

The sounds featured on the LP were recorded in several different hospital departments including: Anaesthesiology, the Clinical Simulation Centre, Health Records, Outpatients reception, the Laboratories, Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxillofacial, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, the Mail Room, the Neonatal Unit, Pharmacy and the Renal Unit. In addition to Forth Valley Royal, recordings were also made in Stirling and Falkirk Community Hospitals. Thanks to all staff and patients in NHS Forth Valley Hospitals for their help and co-operation.

Audiology for Beginners is a playful (though somewhat impractical) attempt at delivering a hearing test over the airwaves. The typical sounds of the hearing test - sine tones at specific frequencies and masks of white noise used to obscure voices - also happen to be the foundational building blocks of electronic music. These ideas and the palette of sounds generated from this source material are combined in a piece that is part radiophonic composition and part genuine attempt at a workable over the air hearing exam.

Audiology for Beginners was first broadcast on WGXC 90.7 FM in the Greene and Columbia Counties of New York State in 2014 . The work was completed during a residency at the Wave Farm study centre in Acra, NY.

A limited edition of vinyl records, and stickers were also produced for the occasion. 

In the 1950s and 60s a scientific report compiled by the record industry stated that teenagers, due to their very short attention span, were unable to listen to a piece of music that lasted more than 2 minutes 50 seconds. This is perhaps one of the reasons that rock’n’roll and pop songs from that period only last around 2 minutes 35. 
In 1967 Sylvie Vartan sung the song “2 minutes 35 de bonheur” (‘ 2 Minutes 35 of pleasure‘) 
With this in mind we decided to make life - and listening to music - easier for the ageing adolescents of yesteryear. We sampled hits from the 1960s and 1970S, some are easy to recognise, others not. We then played these loops on radios and ghettoblasters in different places around Paris. Whilst the loops were being played DinahBird, in the manner of a radio continuity announcer, filled in the pauses and described what she saw going on around her. 

We call them : Pop Field Recordings.

A Selection of Tracks from HAIRWAVES A Cautionary Tale by Zoë Irvine & Mark Vernon in collaboration with Freight Design, Glasgow.

A friend once explained to me that it is essential to dress up for a trip to the hairdressers, to attempt to express the style of what you're looking for in the cut, clothes & colours that could be visually de-coded by the hairdresser, something beyond words to assist the communication, fraught as it is. This project was born prior to this top tip, after yet another brutal scalping at the hands of a Dundee hairdresser. Mark and I had decided to collaborate, but didn't yet know what we would do. I was not concentrating fully as we discussed various ideas, irrationally distracted by the undesired and uncooperative HAIRCUT. And so it was that in 2001 we began to record hairdressers. Mark, not having such a personal bug bare with barbers soon broadened the scope to pet grooming, wig making and the paranormal. We've collected much material, from anecdotes blowing hot and cold on the subject of hairdryers, to accounts of the bald facts on barbers. We have snipped and textured, layered, added some highlights and brushed away the clippings so we can now offer up this cautionary tale.

JPR Horspiel Mixtape

American composer Carl Stone is visiting Copenhagen and is our guest of honour in this special, which was first broadcast live on The Lake on September 11th 2016. Stone is an early pioneer of using sampling, and is nowadays primarily working in the field of live computer music. Listen in for a two-hour interview about his composition techniques, tape, programming, radio and being on both sides of the microphone.

Preparation : packing my own equipment (and forgetting my boompole, taking my two kids to the mountains for doing a workshop is not the easiest part of this project), preparing some sounds for sharing, some portable recorders and headphones for the participants.
Leaving home and driving, arriving at Mitakal : suddenly, the change of environment, from the hills of Taipei to mid-altitude mountains of Hsinchu has an immediate effect on me : reappropriate the senses, change the perspective, adapt to another timeframe.
We start by a listening session. I often believe it is better to open the ears indoor. I usually bring my old pair of loudspeakers (who traveled everywhere in Taiwan from Matsu to Pingtung, from Qimei to Yilan) so I know what kind of auditory experience I can provide. Ethnographical documents such as the vanished indigenous people of Terra del Fuego, fragments of sound environments from Antarctica, my own recordings of the fauna of Taiwan (amphibians, mammals, birds, underwater creatures), those are tools for reconnecting the ears to the imagination, offering a new field of perception.
Then the technical explanations : the tools are simple, portable recorders, protections against the wind for the sensitive built-in microphones, and the mandatory headphones that allows to check in real-time what is being recorded. These items help to concentrate the attention on sound and bring another type of body experience, a mediated interface between the ears, the hand and the environment.
The first work of a field recordist is to listen to the world through these devices : the microphone acts like a telescope or a microscope, it allows to discover the sounds from another perspective and even allows to explore the sonic phenomena that are usually hard or impossible to detect. The headphone isolate from the direct sounds, it projects the audition towards outside. It's a bit like if the hands were holding the ears.
We try the equipment indoor, then go out, in the night. The absence of daylight helps forgetting a bit about vision. Insects, night birds and some muntjack and flying squirrels are singing all along. And the wind, and the water are singing too, it is a tapestry of sound.
The participants are very quick. They jump and dive into this listening experience. They were ready for it, because they have an intense relationship to their environment, their knowledge of the forest, of the mountain is coming from their practice of hunting, gathering, observing. They immediately embrace the devices for listening to the sounds, and start collecting them.
Later during the night, the collective discussing is partly a sharing, partly a re-processing of this experience.
The path is open, they know what is possible, they can develop their own sound project.
The next day, they spend a bit of time alone. Some will try to make a sound trap by settling the recorder at the entrance of a pangolin's burrow, some will record cicadas and bird songs, some will catch the delicate popping sound of some seeds drying in the sun. The last hours are spent introducing about sound editing, using software for cutting, arranging, mixing the recorded sounds.
The workshop was very short, but extremely satisfying : I have the feeling that not only the participants could swallow and digest what I wanted to share, but also immediately imagine some ways to implement the field recording practice.
Also, they even made a new boompole for me, with bamboo.

Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones is an interactive installation enabling the public to play the ghosts of radio towers with radio waves.

Architecture, technology, history, and the human body come together in this near-supernatural conjuring of the spirits of the Radio Canada International shortwave towers.

Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones is an interactive installation about the disappearance of shortwave radio transmissions.  It is a requiem for the Radio Canada International shortwave site that was located near the border of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and transmitted shortwave radio around the world from 1944 – 2014. 

In radio terminology, a dead zone is an area where radio signals cannot be received due to propagation difficulties. With the RCI site gone, there are now a lot more dead zones in the world, not due to interference, but rather because the transmissions have ceased.

This interactive installation involves 13 towers with capacitance sensors positioned around the space to create a scale model of the recently demolished RCI site. Each tower has capacitance sensors dedicated to one of the radio towers that stood there. The towers are placed in relation to one another exactly according to the placements of the original radio towers, and the heights of their antennas are built to the scale of the height of the tower they represent.

From a distance one can see glowing red towers. From up close, the proximity of one’s body will trigger ghostly droning sounds, as electrons jump from the human body to the theremin, triggering the haunting audio recordings.

The public is invited to walk among the scale model of the site and to interact with the towers and to trigger the sounds of the RCI towers – using radio waves to play the ghosts of the radio towers.

Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones (drone from tower M)

This is a simulation of the sound installation Birthday Bash by Sarah Washington, which was exhibited on the construction site of the Alte Weinbauschule in Bernkastel on the 29th June 2019. The sounds, recorded two days previously at the site, are of various building activities or were made by playing in the empty resonant spaces with found materials such as metal bars, bottles and sheets of polystyrene. Audio transformations were made to short excerpts of the recordings, which were then played randomly over two radio transmitters to 30 radios. As it was very noisy on site, this recreation was made afterwards to give a clean sound.

In 2016 DinahBird & Jean-Philippe Renoult began Antenna Gods, a composite art project on the use of radio waves by high frequency traders. In June 2018 they undertook a journey between the New York stock exchange, now a data centre in Mahwah, New Jersey, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in Aurora, West Chicago. The time it takes for data to be transmitted from one centre to the other via a network of microwave repeaters is 4.01 milliseconds, faster than the blink of an eye. These microwave repeaters are placed on towers that follow a geodesic path between the two exchanges. The actual route of the towers takes you over the Allegheny mountains of rural Pennsylvania and past many an Amish homestead, through the flat plains of Ohio, and in front of the immaculately mowed lawns and the blue ‘Make America great again’ flags of Indiana. Some of the towers are a requisition from the AT&T long lines network and can be found at the end of long dusty roads where the presence of new comers is instantly noticed. Some are new and specially commissioned for the purpose. They are unremarkable, just another shape in amongst the spikey cell phone antennas that litter the interstate. DinahBird & Jean-Philippe Renoult’s ‘slow’ high frequency round-trip along what Chicago traders nick-name the Gold Line, took twenty-four days. Along the way we documented these outposts and their surroundings using image and sound. They learned about the past and present uses of these transmission towers that are both a material memorial to radio history, and a physical reminder of passing time.
