I guess this song is about a freak occurrence when asteroids destroy a town somewhere in the mid west. It opens with a news reporter surveying the devastation, then flashes back to a mother huddling with her kids.  

I know this is scientifically insane, asteroids are way to big to just hit a little town.

I wrote this song for a woman who was with another man. She dumped him to date me, but it almost immediately didn't work out. She has a child now and a beautiful life with a wonderful husband.
