Enchanting Nocturne in G Minor: Whispers of Shadows

My first experiment in a somewhat sonata-like movement that loosely follows the exposition-development-recapitulation cycle, where the second, G major (tethering even on D major) returns in the recapitulation in the home key of C minor. It took me longer to finish than anticipated but in the end, I'm extremely pleased with the result. 

The main theme is one of those themes that simply appears almost on its own when your hands land on the piano. It was a delightful, but chalenging experience trying to develop it and derive new themes from it, in the end I've scraped as many themes as I've included. 

I dedicate this work to my dear friend Ivan Dadić and his wife, Katarina Dadić, who liked the melody so much that she used it as a ringtone for her alarm clock.

Allegro for Piano, C Minor

The main theme of my Aria was also written during my teenage years on a cheap Yamaha keyboard, as a simple flute melody. A dozen years later, after vigorously immersing myself in the music of the old masters, I finally managed to breathe completely new life and meaning into it.

I can confidently say that I drew inspiration from the enchanting and, at times, ethereal serenity of a particular Mediterranean landscape also found in my native province of Dalmatia. This was perfectly captured by a beautiful watercolor painting (courtesy of a magnificent painter, Vanja Kalemba) depicting a white church nestled in a lavender field. The painting may have even spurred me on further to try to encapsulate the feeling of the landscape, a beauty that no one from Dalmatia can ever take for granted due to its constant and ever-present allure.

The form of this composition falls somewhere between a rondo and theme & variations, since all the episode of the rondo form stem from the main melody as, after many experiments, I concluded that a more straightforward musical language better suits the vision of this piece, without the need for complex ornamentation and texture.

I dedicate this composition to my beloved son Karlo, who has brought more serenity and beauty into my life than anything else.

Aria for Piano, C Major

My new Nocturne that I've started writting a few years ago, the main theme and the E-flat majorish restatement of the main theme came quite swiftly and naturally. However, I found myself a bit stuck on how to proceed further, and as a result, I neglected it for quite some time and focused on other musical pursuits.

However, just around this Christmas, as I leisurely sat by my piano, a new theme and continuation unexpectedly presented themselves, and the composition practically wrote itself from there.

I feel that this piece really captures the essence of a Nocturne, depicting the stillness of the night, scarcely moved by a lonely star or a lamppost on a street, and also conveys the painful but sometimes even sweet melancholy of one's solitude.

Happy b-day Abi.  His fave director is Stanely Kubrick. I asked him to rec me a film last year and he said “Happiness with Philip Seymour Hofman.” I thought it was creative and funny and sad. He has higher moral standards than me. Found his gf perverted.  I would have called it kinky. I was going to tell him to lower his standards but if someone said, “maybe you should cheat”to me I’d say “no” cos a)your gf is supposed to be one of your best friends and b)it’s disrespectful. If I treat one of my best friends with disrespect how can I treat my friends well?  So I think Abi should do Abi. Other than that Abi sent me a pic and I told him he looked a bit like Rami Malek. He wasn’t too fond of that but Rami Malek isn’t bad looking and Abi looks 16.

I thought the whole song was A Dorian but it’s actually A dorian b2 alternating with A dorian for the verses.  I came up with the riff and wanted to make it more complex so I used the same strumming technique for ‘Can’t Stop.’ First time I used hand clicks for a song and also first time I’ve kept an entire song all modal. Thought the vocal phrasing was quite ZZ Ward for the verse and I wanted to  make it more hard rock sounding like Soundgarden. So the verses sound quite ZZ Garden or Soundward (Squidward). The bass in the verses is playing a simplified version of the bass line in ‘Come Together.’ I do like the vocal phrasing for ‘yet in the mix I found joy’ for the chorus. First time I’m doing that much falsetto for lead which is inspired by QOTSA. Some counter melodies for the beginning of verse 2. Fave use of counter melody is probably the 2nd half of ‘Emotion Sickness’ from Silverchair. I added some congas and wanted the same rhythm as the percussion from ‘Roots Bloody Roots’ but I decided to keep things simple and accent the 2 vocal syllables.. Then, the last chorus I was going to copy paste my piano parts but accidentally copy pasted my lead guitar over and that improved the groove.

Lyrics: Written by SGOR. Some guy on reddit. Lost contact. If it sounds like it was written an angsty teen that’s cos’ it was written by an angsty teen. Terrific message about finding empathy. Not sure about how death fits into all this.  ‘There can be miracles when you believe’ is cheesy on paper but I don’t think it’s cheesy when you hear it. ‘If you squeeze my lizard I’ll put my snake on you’ is ridiculous on paper but badass when you hear it. Depends on vocal tone, phrasing, delivery, and melody.

Running through the lost ruins of an apocalypse. (I wanted to give some more sensory elements to a song that was very much ‘in its feelings. So I matched the idea of a cataclysm. Took about 10 secs to type out)

My music has a lot of variety in a way that expresses all kinds of sentiments, both intrapersonal and extrapersonal, kept in a cohesion by an underlying narrative; every composition is its own journey or a adventure, and I invite any guests who stumble upon my page to take part in it.
