Η μουσική JAZZ εμφανίστηκε γύρω στα τέλη του 19ου αι. στη Νέα Ορλεάνη και αποτελεί εξέλιξη της μουσικής των Αφρικανών σκλάβων, σε συνδυασμό με τη μουσική των Ευρωπαίων αποίκων (κυρίως αυτή που παίζονταν από τις στρατιωτικές μπάντες).

Τα πρώτα βήματα προς τη διαμόρφωση του μουσικού ιδιώματος της τζαζ έγιναν με την εκτέλεση εμβατηρίων σε αφρικάνικο στυλ (έμφαση στο ρυθμό, μετατόπιση του τονισμού από το ισχυρό μέρος του μέτρου στο ασθενές και αυτοσχεδιαζόμενες μελωδίες στο στυλ των μπλουζ).

Τα στυλ της τζαζ:

Ragtime (1880-αρχές 1900)
Dixieland (1917-1920)
Swing (1935-1945)
Cool Jazz (1950-1960)
Free Jazz (δεκαετία του 1960) 
Η τζαζ δε σταματά ποτέ (Δεκαετία του 1970 μέχρι και σήμερα)

Μετά τη δεκαετία του 1960, εμφανίζονται ρεύματα όπως «άβανγκαρντ» (avant-garde), «λάτιν» (latin), «άσιντ τζαζ» (acid jazz) κ.ά.

Ακόμα και συνθέτες μουσικής του 20ου αι. έχουν γράψει επηρεασμένοι από τη τζαζ μουσική (όπως οι Κουρτ Βάιλ,Τζορτζ Γκέρσουιν, Λέοναρντ Μπέρνσταϊν κ.ά.). 

Η τζαζ μουσική πλέον αναγνωρίστηκε ως η μουσική που αντιπροσώπευε την ελευθερία. Οι μουσικοί άρχισαν να χρησιμοποιούν στοιχεία της τζαζ στις συνθέσεις τους, δημιουργώντας νέα είδη μουσικής.

  Εξάλλου, όπως έχει πει και ο συγγραφέας και διευθυντής του περιοδικού «Jazz Magazine», Φίλιπ Κάρλς (Ph. Carles): «η έννοια της τζαζ δεν πρέπει να περιορίζεται μόνο στη μουσική. 

Αν προσπαθήσουμε να την ερμηνεύσουμε αποκλειστικά με μουσικολογικούς όρους, τότε παραβλέπουμε το πιο σημαντικό της σημείο, το βασικό της κλειδί, ότι πάνω απ’ όλα η τζαζ είναι μια στάση ζωής, ένας τρόπος να αντιμετωπίζεις τον κόσμο και την καθημερινή ζωή».
