Dirk Stolk aka De Manager – The Turnover Episode 36

De Manager

Dirk Stolk, aka De Manager, gaat al een hoop jaren mee in de muziekwereld. Zijn gevoel voor ritme ontwikkelde hij 10 jaar lang als drummer. Inmiddels heeft De Managers al meer dan 400 shows als DJ achter zijn naam staan en stond op festivals als We Are Electric, Amsterdam Dance Event, Solar, Paaspop, Freeride Week (Frankrijk) en Sziget Festival (Hongarije). Daarnaast draaid hij ook regelmatig in club op clubavonden als Disco Snolly, Smerrig en Vroeg Pieken, is hij programmeur van Club Smederij, maakt hij een carnavalspodcast met de naam Kiele Kiele en runt hij zijn eigen agency’s HENG en BOEKTEM.

De stijl van De Manager is niet in één genre te plaatsen. Hij draait energieke sets met hiphop, dansbare sets vol house en disco, bouwt een feest in je club en veroorzaakte hij recent nog polonaises tijdens carnaval. De Manager laat je kennis maken met onbekende parels en maakt eigen producties. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de baile funk edit van ‘Watskeburt’, een eigen versie van Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’, zijn eerste eigen release Love Nobody Else en zijn uitgebreide reeks mixtapes.

Hoe dees carnaval er ook uit komt te zien; vreten moet je toch! En om een goeie bodem te leggen, serveer ik je hierbij alvast 11 gangen in de snackbar; van ’n lekker delleke tot friet met mayonaise en van de gehaktbal tot slaoi, mee juin, meej aaj, meej èrrepel!  

Vet handig om dees lekkere mix op te zetten terwijl jij met carnaval je nek vol aan het duwen bent, zodat ge zeker weet dagge ginnen after-dinner-dip vat! Smakelijk!

Het Hiphop Journaal bestaat alweer 2,5 jaar en we gaan eindelijk weer spelen, dus was het tijd voor een nieuwe mixtape. House music makes you feel good, gives you energy and is made for dancing. It awakens the urge to make you move, it starts a fire inside. The name Gimli is derived from the old Norse word Gimm, meaning fire. And that’s exactly what he’s bringing to the dancefloor; hot disco, fiery feelgood house and steamy grooves..

In this first mixtape you’ll enter my world of Gimli, where I’ll show you a selection of my favourite tunes to play during sets. Starting of with positive and feelgood gospel and disco, moving up the tempo to energetic house and breaky techno and finishing of with trancey tunes and hyperpop-ish bangers.

Gimli has a wide experience on stage as he played more than 500 shows in his 10+ years as a DJ. He played at festivals like We Are Electric, Amsterdam Dance Event, Draaimolen, Into The Woods, Solar Weekend and Sziget and in venues like 013, Effenaar and ZiggoDome. Furthermore he’s a Disco Snolly resident, booker at Club Smederij and plays all kind of different music under his aliases ‘De Manager’ and ‘Het Hiphop Journaal’.

This is gonna so corny, but here we go: this was one of the most fun shows I've ever did. Playing Amsterdam Dance Event for the first time with this new GIMLI alias, even with my own House of GIMLI hosting, with a huge squad from hometown Tilburg in front of me and the fabulous people of Club Nyx. No crowd of thousands, just a small dark sweaty room full of ravers.

Also a big big shoutout to DEBAR, 3kus and Fedya Hella for playing joining and playing huge sets! 

Here's the recording of the set I played there. Not the neatest mixes and you'll completely miss the vibe of that room on that specific day. But it might bring you back there or give you an idea of this night!

Hiphop You Don't Stop-Mixtape

I played a hell lot of shows again this year, but there's one genre I absolutely played the most: DISCO!

It was so much fun playing Disco Snolly sets at festivals like 7th Sunday, Paaspop, Weekend Magnifiek and Jungle, that I had to record one of those sets. Ofcourse there was only one perfect place for this live-set; at the home of Snolly, Cul de Sac in Tilburg.

Een jaar geleden maakte ik de mixtape 'Hiphop You Don't Stop', een verzameling waarbij ik mijn 50 favoriete hiphopclassics in exact 1 uur in elkaar heb gemixt. Deze werd zo goed ontvangen, dat ik steeds meer de vraag kreeg om hier een Nederlandse versie van te maken. Daarom presenteer ik jullie nu; Het Hiphop Journaal!

Het lukte me niet om binnen het uur te blijven en ook de 50 tracks ben ik ruim voorbij gegaan, maar het is een mix geworden waar ik ontzettend trots op ben. Ja, er missen zeker nog de nodige tracks en nee, je gaat het niet met al mijn keuzes eens zijn, maar dit is een verzameling van mijn persoonlijke lievelings-tunes geworden. Nummers die mijn muzikale jeugd vorm hebben gegeven, bijzondere herinneringen met zich meedragen of juist de basis voor de toekomst van hiphop in Nederland hebben gelegd. Ik voel me dan ook blessed dat mijn helden als Sticks en Winne een bijdrage hebben geleverd aan deze mix.
