Taste is about the decay of a relationship in the simplest sense. About feeling frustrated and trapped but knowing you put yourself in that position in the first place. Be it a relationship with a person or a city or both. Falling in and out of love with a person and a place and all the memories and constant reminders that they hold. It was one of the most organic songs we wrote for the E.P in that it came purely from the four of us jamming it out until it became something tangible.

SHINIES - Taste

Paradise emerge from a summer slumber with a pair of new electronic guitar pop anthems. The London duo will release double A-side single, “Stars Shine Bright” and “I Can Feel Your Love” on November 18th via Dirty Bingo Records.

Their new single finds Paradise going deeper into the electronic realm, grappling with childish naivety with newfound samplers and synth.   

“Stars Shine Bright” was recorded on location in a sealed bunker known as A10/The Empty Parallel  (the spiritual home of Paradise & The New Legendary Children of Mu).  It is a rallying call for the youth, addictive and dense, pop hooks stitched and woven through breakbeats, drum machines, synths and guitar.

After a series of singles and an EP on up-and-coming label Dirty Bingo, who were the first to bring Novella and Women’s Hour to the fore, the boys return with their long awaited debut album ‘Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere’, a line borrowed from Philip Larkin’s famous poem ‘I Remember, I Remember’. Nostalgia, memory, confusion and regret are themes that run deep throughout the Shinies catalogue so it’s no surprise that such a title was chosen. The sunrise through squinted eyes drifty narrative of Larkin’s key poem is the perfect backdrop to the swells and swirls of their impressive shoegaze-pop debut long play.

They’ve come a long way since their initial late night jams in a Manchester basement back in 2011. The DIY spirit remains but is crafted, executed and expressed better than ever before. MJ of Hookworms produced, and his stamp is understated but important, threading together narrative, a journey. This is more than just a collection of songs. It’s an etching. The story of our every day struggle for expression, for freedom, set against the monotonous hum of our zero hour contract inner city jobs.

Singer and guitar player Adam Davison’s effortless pop melodies drive the LP forward. Title track ’Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere’ begins with the characteristic soft swell of Ric Stringer’s guitar work but unfurls surprisingly, reminding us just why we fell in love with Shinies in the first place. With the two sharing vocals throughout the record, Tom Haben on drums and Joe Fisher on bass complete the line-up. Elsewhere on the record, the lo-fi surfy ‘Beached’ screeches and screams along its rickety iron tracks and ‘6s & 7s’ shows the group breaking new ground. With its slower groove and laid bare vocal, it’s reminiscent of Yo La Tengo and Connan Mockasin, suggesting future directions.

In a time of struggle and nostalgia for a time that never was, Shinies remind us to keep our heads down and carry on.

CLOUT! began about four years ago, forming organically in and around Southend. Their music draws from an array of influences familiar to the 60s-70s psychedelic as much as 80s dancehall, all held together by sampling and beat patterns inspired by the 90s ‘Golden-era’ of hip-hop. However CLOUT! are by no means affixed to any certain genre or movement or roles as musicians they aim to use a variety of different instruments and roles to create diversely arranged songs.

The Natvral wanted to share a new take on an old song of his that still means a lot to me. “Ramona” was originally a b-side to the “Young Adult Friction” 7”, but despite it’s obscurity, it was a song I performed countless times unaccompanied at PAINS shows as an encore. Perhaps The Natvral is in some ways an encore - and like many PAINS encores, not prompted by rapturous applause or perfunctory showmanship  - but simply a desire to keep making music.

DBR020: The Natvral - Ramona (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart cover)

Named after and inspired by the 60’s and 70’s comic book series, London duo Men’s Adventures draw inspiration from the imaginative narratives of classic animated fiction and marry these with an emotive take on surf, Western and psychedelic rock. Comprised from core members and longtime friends Alfie and Jimmy who share songwriting and vocal duties, their music echoes the aural space between the widescreen sonics of Ennio Morricone soundtracks, fuzzed-out and cathartic guitar workouts of Neil Young, dark storytelling of Nick Cave and the brittle anthemics of Wolf Parade and The Arcade Fire, while carving out their own distinctive sound and inherent feel for melody.  

Their new EP (Solitary Trip) is released on ears to the ground purveyors of leftfield garage-pop Dirty Bingo (Woman’s Hour, Drop Out Venus, Shinies). Recorded over an intensive two weeks, the sense of restless energy is palpable, from the rollicking shuffle and spectral overtones of ‘BB Vulture’ to the anthemic refrain and uplifting folk-rock of ‘Friends’. ‘Welcome Home’ is an impassioned country-tinged ballad as filtered through forlorn and feedback-drenched guitars, while ‘Feeling Bad’ with it’s twangy San Remo guitars and cinematic surf-rock plays out like the likely backdrop a Tarantino scene
