"Stuck in the 9-5 grind, stifled by the impersonality of constant social media and mobile interaction, contemporary urban life can be suffocating. For a certain breed, release cannot be found in the vast, unpopulated great outdoors. Urban Animals congregate in heaving warehouses, seeking solace in the liberating beats of the kick drum. They are bound not by association, but through a shared experience of primal relief felt in those shadowy, dance floor corners swelling with the sounds of low end frequencies and brazenly sculpted grooves. This is the Urban Animal’s jungle.

Claude VonStroke’s third original album and the 100th release for dirtybird is indebted to this bold and bestial inner-city lifestyle, but it’s also a product of its creator; a unique subspecies steeped in that San Franciscan sound, intersecting unknown terrain on instruction of the inimitable dirtybird label boss. The 8th release on Desert Hearts Records comes from label boss Mikey Lion alongside fellow tech house enthusiast and Desert Hearts veteran, Bengal. The first track on the EP, titled "Big Cats Groove", is a tribal drum track laced with low slung lion and tiger samples. The vocal sample that instructs the crowd how to properly find the groove was appropriately recorded from Bengal's African Drum Teacher during his last semester at UC Berkeley. The second track on The Big Cats EP, titled "Like That", is a straight to the point tech house banger that hits as low to the floor as it gets. The equally tough vocal sample reminds the crowd to put trust in their DJ just as the bassline comes back in giving them what they want.  Finally, Bengal's remix of "Big Cats Groove" completes the EP as he takes a much more spacey and dubbed out approach to the track. Filled with melodic synths and vocal echoes, the EP ends with a much moodier and super tripped out vibe.

When Claude was hunting for tracks to include in his ‘Live in Detroit’ album, he came across Chambray’s ‘Evenue’ , which ended up making the final mix in his recorded Movement set. When we reached out to him about it, the Berlin artist sent us 4 demos and we signed them all. 

With an influence from the early stripped down jack sound of the Midwest, Chambray’s productions add a polished style and wide range of musical character, both of which are in full display on his “Where You At?” EP. 

It’s not easy to create a ‘signature’ sound that both crosses boundaries and also appeals to them all, yet Chambray’s particular music feels effortless.

You know Dirtybird for dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance floor since January 2005.

The fun family vibe of the Dirtybird label can be traced back to a free event started in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This new kind of house music went against the smooth vocal house that was popular at the time and derived its influences mostly from hip-hop, drum n bass, and American funk. The free outdoor BBQ party was very rough around the edges but eventually became legendary amongst the people of San Francisco. This event was also a very influential factor in the decision by Claude VonStroke to start the record label in 2005.

Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandise, licensing and artist management. In 2015, Dirtybird launched the inaugural Dirtybird Campout festival, which has been dubbed “Summer Camp For Adults”, and Dirtybird has been recognized from their achievements by being awarded "Underground Label of the Year" at the International Dance Music Awards, “Label of the Decade” by Mixmag, “Best North American Label” by DJ Mag, and Billboard’s "Top 5 Independent Dance Labels".
