-How long have you been creating music?

I started creating house music 3 years ago.



-What do you use to make your tracks?

In the box only, for now: I use Ableton Live, a midi controller and solid plugins.



-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?

The first time I heard Dirtybird’s music was back when I was living in France. I stumbled randomly upon the Hatched Volume 2 comp (2012), and that Kill Frenzy track, Booty Clap, sounded like nothing I’ve ever heard before. I dug quite a bit and I have followed the label ever since.



-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?

Definitely Cour T. 



-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?

Science, house music and diapers (directed by Wes Anderson).



-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Overall, it has to be Daft Punk, Alive Tour in France. But the best Dirtybird related event I’ve done was by far that Walker and Royce set at Campout 2017. They played almost all the songs from their upcoming LP at that time and the vibes were unmatched.



-If you could time travel, where and when would you go?

Sometimes in the 60ies to catch all the classic rock bands live.



-What species of bird best describes you and why?

The Storks of Alsace, the region of France where I come from. I grew up observing them during the summer. 



-What does Dirtybird mean to you?

To me, it's first a forward-thinking house music label that cares about pushing music in their direction no matter the current trends. It’s all the more important today. But Dirtybird also has the best community of amazing artists and fans throughout the world. They created something very unique and respected in many aspects, and it's a real pleasure to join the flock!

-How long have you been creating music? 

Ed: I’ve been writing music since I was in high school, but I really got into writing more dance music starting in 2018.I started collaborating with Barbara in 2021 when I moved back to SF from the east coast.

Barbara: Like a lot of artists, I grew up in a very music-filled family and home. My grandpa was a saxophone player who tried to teach me piano, flute, and every instrument he could until I realized I could sing, and my voice became my main instrument. I didn’t start officially creating music until I moved to NY in 2016, ~7 years ago, through DJ mixes and learning Ableton. Made my first-ever album in 2022, Palm Dreams, after 100s of voice memos, drum beats, and Ableton experiments I created.

-What do you use to make your tracks?
Ed: I primarily use Ableton, but I have a few different hardware synths I like to sprinkle in, especially my Arturia microfreak.

Barbara: Voice memos, notes, Ableton, and a great microphone. I use my Arturia keyboard, lots of plugins (Endless Smile, Valhalla Vintage Verb, Autotune, etc.) and have an older Ableton Push that I sometimes use.

-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?

Ed: I first discovered Dirtybird at a DB BBQ in nyc 2015. It was so different than anything else I was listening to at the time; the crowd was so nice, and I was sucked right in.

Barbara: My first-ever Ableton teacher, Tony Grund, Instructor at SAE, Editor at Nervous Records and part of the Renegade Masters crew, first introduced me to Dirtybird. The first track I heard was Justin Martin’s Don’t Go and fell in love. I have to really thank him for showing me some incredible artists and labels like Dirtybird, full of new sounds and artists being fun and taking risks. It has influenced my sound a lot. The track on Dirtybird that I am obsessed with these days is Shake Your Hearts by Scavazza. I probably listen to it once a day. 



-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?

Ed: There are so many amazing artists on Dirtybird, but ever since I heard her music, I’ve wanted to collaborate with Nala.

Barbara: Tie between Scavazza and Catz ‘n Dogz.



-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?

Barbara: “Good Crazy”

Ed: “What is Happening?”



-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Barbara: Nicolas Jaar, Brooklyn Steel, 2017

Ed: Kaskade Redux in nyc in 2019. The music was amazing, and it was so cool to feel so much energy with such a minimal setup. 



-If you could time travel, where and when would you go?

Barbara: 1970s Studio 54 

Ed: I’d like to go to the Cretaceous period and see if T-Rex had feathers.



-What species of bird best describes you and why?

Barbara: Penguins because they like to have fun, sing and dance, bounce on rocks and are smart, so loving and cute

Ed: I’d be a peacock, not just for the beauty but because they escape their pens at the zoo.



-What does Dirtybird mean to you?

Barbara: A community of crazy, fun, super talented risk taskers and a home for experimenting and breaking new sounds. Where pushing boundaries is the norm and people feel free to be 100% themselves. It’s such an honor to release one of my first tracks with my good friend and collaborator, Ed Hoffman, on a label I’ve always admired. 

Ed: An environment where I can genuinely be myself and let my freak feathers fly.

-How long have you been creating music?
A21: I've been creating music for 7 years, which is 61,344 hours :)
Mexpha: I'd played around with various instruments as long as I can remember, however I picked up production when I was 13. It's coming up to 18 years ago now so way over half of my life.

-What do you use to make your tracks?
A21: Ableton until I die.
Mexpha: I'm a FL Studio guy through and through, unapologetically. FL was clowned on a lot when I first started producing, but it's what I know and I'm confident I can make great music with it.

-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?
A21: I discovered Shiba San's - OKAY, and it was on repeat for like a year ahha. Then I got to know about the parties and immediately fell in love with the creators and the community. I have been following closely since, which is why I'm so happy to have a 2nd Birdfeed release. 1 step closer to a full Dirtybird release :)
Mexpha: When I was about 16, I was a big online socialiser and would chat to people from all over since there wasn't much going on in my hometown and I didn't know anybody else into production in person. A friend from SF was going to Dirtybird events and shared some music with me and I fell in love with the sound instantly. We'd hop on Skype calls and just discuss music that fell into that kind of sound and share production techniques etc all aiming to hopefully get on Dirtybird some day, so I'm really chuffed to be putting this one out with you. Shout out to Jerrad and Wyatt for introducing me to Dirtybird.

-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?
A21: Well, being south-American (Chilean), I'm really proud of the Brazil's immersion in the label and the genre, so I would say: Court T & Holt 88. And then, I'm based in the UK, so it would be lovely to collaborate with GAWP as well.
Mexpha: Aside from Claude being the obvious, I've been into Mark Starr's music heavily since I first came across it. n808 is also killing it these days. Both have become good friends of mine over the last few years so maybe it'll happen sometime, who knows?



-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?

A21: Banshees of Inisherin

-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

A21: Ultra Chile GTA 2015 - the most insane crowd control and fans.
Mexpha: Viagra Boys, London, January '23. Those guys know how to put on a show and they're not afraid to be themselves. I think a lot of music these days is missing that and more people could do with being a bit more loose and taking themselves less seriously.

My last single, ‘Better days’ represented the transition out of winter into spring. ‘Joy’ represents the summer, a time to share happiness with the people I care about the most. They are my Joy.

You know Dirtybird for dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance floor since January 2005.

The fun family vibe of the Dirtybird label can be traced back to a free event started in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This new kind of house music went against the smooth vocal house that was popular at the time and derived its influences mostly from hip-hop, drum n bass, and American funk. The free outdoor BBQ party was very rough around the edges but eventually became legendary amongst the people of San Francisco. This event was also a very influential factor in the decision by Claude VonStroke to start the record label in 2005.

Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandise, licensing and artist management. In 2015, Dirtybird launched the inaugural Dirtybird Campout festival, which has been dubbed “Summer Camp For Adults”, and Dirtybird has been recognized from their achievements by being awarded "Underground Label of the Year" at the International Dance Music Awards, “Label of the Decade” by Mixmag, “Best North American Label” by DJ Mag, and Billboard’s "Top 5 Independent Dance Labels".
