Not The Religion - Party Party [AK Cartel Records]

(Sometimes the algorithm breaks my heart and it did yesterday.  "Meadows Green" is so mellow and pretty--you should give it a listen, especially if you like any of the most "popular" mellow Interbay tracks like "December Endings" or "Passing By".  I think you'd like it, no matter what the algorithm thinks.)  

Today's track is one of the more straight forward Interbay tracks.  I wanted to make a house track.  And, to even my own surprise, I made a house track.  It doesn't suddenly veer off into post-punk or industrial or electro.  It starts as a house track, it remains a house track throughout, and when it ends--it ends as a house track.  

If you've been following the Interbay music project for any length of time, you'll know how unusual that is...

That's not to say it isn't an IInterbay track.  Oh, it definitely IS, clearly, an Interbay track.  At one point, it sounds like a train is coming right through the track, and then, towards the end, the bassline shows some 80s synth pop influence--that works in a house track, but isn't as traditional of a "house track" element as other parts of this track.  

But, if you're looking for hi-hats that sizzle, claps on the two and four, a four on the floor beat that lets you groove for as long as you want.  I even put in some flutes, if you were a fan of Deep Forest in the nineties and wanted a similar vibe, but at house music tempos.  

I have two concerns with this track.  Perhaps you could guide me towards answers?  

If you look at the waveform for this track, you'll see large sections where the waveform is completely filling the available space.  I pushed this track right up to the clipper/limiter--wanting to get that good hard club "thump"...but I worry this is at the cost of clarity?  Does this track seem overdriven to you...or does it work?  

My second question is similar.  The royalty-free vocal sample I used seems to be particularly difficult to understand.  That quality is in the original sample, it is not simply a matter of whatever effects I did or didn't put on it.  I can pick out a few words here and there (which is why the thumbnail is both colorful and abstract, as one of the phrases I do hear clearly is about "lights flash" so I picked and produced an image that reminded me of being on a dance floor of a club playing house music until the early hours of the morning.  

I can also hear, clearly, "love is so profound"--which...I mean...yeah...  (Couldn't think of what would be a way to represent that idea, visually...so I chose to represent "lights flash."  

I'm not even sure that the title of this track, "Quell," is actually what is being sung.  It could just as easily be "well" or another word that rhymes with that.  

...but I love the word "Quell" more than "well"--so, "Quell" it is.  (And the only things that "Quell" made me think of was The Hunger Games...and that "quell" is something that those in charge do when there is a rebellion or uprising...)  

...and I didn't want to use imagery from either of those ideas, so abstract colored lights it is.  

If you like house music, club music, electronic dance music...I think you'll like this one.  (And this time, having a longer song certainly fits the vibe!)

It's been a storming and busy, decade-spanning rollercoaster ride for the Bern, Switzerland-born and now Berlin-based DJ, producer and Keno Records founder David Keno since he stepped on the scene with his debut EP „Take The World“ back in 2004.  Influenced by bands and musicians like Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield and Depeche Mode and being classically trained on guitar and drums the young David Keno started his musical journey playing in various Rock-focused band outfits throughout his youth whilst a growing love and fascination for electronic music soon led into early drum machine and synth experiments, followed by first remixes and more electronic edits for the bands he played in.  Having mastered his electronic studio setup and fully turned his head onto electronic music he quickly started to carve out a musical niche of his own, incorporating elements from both the House and Techno ends of the spectrum, unfolding complex and vibrant, sometimes even playful melodic layers on top of a straight and dancefloor-functional foundation, catering maximum impact and high energy levels whilst sending punters into ecstatic heavens with his recent productions.  After taking the scene by storm with the „Bubble Bath EP“, a record released under his Vernis alias via Pocketgame and critically acclaimed not only for the massive remix created by Trentemøller which became a club favourite of 2005, things started to skyrocket for David Keno who – now mainly focusing on productions under his own name – quickly became a sought-after producer and remixer after his first club hit.  Backed by a string of releases on labels like David Corrado's i220 as well as remixes crafted for the likes of Samuel L Session, G-Man, Alex Bau and even a rework commissioned for the Trans-X's classic „Living On Video“ alongside a buzzing DJ- and live schedule which has taken him to places all over the globe ever since, the launch of his own label Keno Records in 2007 was much more than a mandatory and logical step for David Keno.

Berlin duo MAT.JOE pair really know how to cook up a storm and once again they prove that in style with a pair of firing new tracks for their home label MOTHER RECORDINGS. It comes after releases on labels like Hot Trax and Gruuv Recordings and again brims with fresh grooves that will be a fine addition to any set. 

STRAWZ opens the account in loose limbed House fashion. Silky drums bobble up and down and retro stabs and chattering claps add bite to the beats. A heavily treated vocal pings about and clever effects help build tension before the whole thing drops into a fat house kicker.

On the flip, SYNTHPHONY pops off like corn, with cyclical drums and more retro stabs urging you to dance. A tinny vocal is stitched into the arrangement and keeps you on edge as loopy bass cuts in and out. Firing and well produced, this is more dance floor dynamite for all.

The latest contribution to Gorge and SKAIs label catalogue comes from a familiar face of the gang. Seems like Mallorcan Frink has a fetish for percussive and rolling beats. RYM019 including three originals, whereby 'Albatros' comes along with a drunken bassline to warming you up for the dance floor, 'Just Human' speaks for itself as a bouncing peak time weapon and the third one, 'Opposite', takes no prisoners in the club morning: Either you dance till early midday or you have to go home. Old family friend David Keno added his personal note on 'Just Human' by turning synths to the maximum, creating a euphoric break in the middle section. Dancers should raise their hands!

Lux Groove first showed up on our radar last year when we signed his collaboration with Mark Starr, “That’s What”, to the Grill$son’s Revenge BBQ compilation. Rooted in hip-hop and drum & bass and at one time a regular on the DMC battle circuit, it’s almost as if he was naturally groomed for Dirtybird.

“Gee Up” is his first solo EP for us on Dirtybird Select, and features two tracks that VonStroke and Family have been using to get massive reactions whenever they play it. The title track is a rolling groove with a filtered acid line and just enough drop to get the crowd worked up to a fever pitch. It’s complimented by “Ride Low”, which has that magical Dirtybird potion of bass. quirkiness and style we love so much.

Pegassi is the moniker of 24-year-old Belgian deejay & producer Sam Huybrecht, hailing from Antwerp.
 
As a 16 year old bedroom producer he got picked up by Giacatori, the deejays and producers behind Dutch wonderboy Lil Kleine. Together they worked on pounding remixes for the headstrong rapper. Next to that Pegassi broke the internet with some huge bootleg remixes: 500.000 plays on Youtube, over a dozen features on different channels and a stunning 1 million plays on Soundcloud. Driven by his love for deep basslines and the house scene, Pegassi's dedication & sick deejay skills brought the him to stages at  festivals like Elrow Town, Balaton & Sunrise.
 
After accomplishing multiple milestones with his previous projects Pegassi is now ready to bring it back to the roots with this release on DJ Licous brand, clubbing concept and house focused label SHOMI. L.A Kitty creates a standard for what to expect from Pegassi in the near future; 5 A.M. rave tech vibes, deep basslines & freaky melodies.

You know Dirtybird for dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dance floor since January 2005.

The fun family vibe of the Dirtybird label can be traced back to a free event started in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This new kind of house music went against the smooth vocal house that was popular at the time and derived its influences mostly from hip-hop, drum n bass, and American funk. The free outdoor BBQ party was very rough around the edges but eventually became legendary amongst the people of San Francisco. This event was also a very influential factor in the decision by Claude VonStroke to start the record label in 2005.

Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandise, licensing and artist management. In 2015, Dirtybird launched the inaugural Dirtybird Campout festival, which has been dubbed “Summer Camp For Adults”, and Dirtybird has been recognized from their achievements by being awarded "Underground Label of the Year" at the International Dance Music Awards, “Label of the Decade” by Mixmag, “Best North American Label” by DJ Mag, and Billboard’s "Top 5 Independent Dance Labels".
