Following in the footsteps of the longed-for 2021 reissue of their seminal EP, ‘It’s The Life’, Detroit's very own guild of disco wizards Billy Lo - alias Billy Love, Darryl Tiggs and Darren Abrams - return to Cosmocities with their first album, ‘Billy Lo’. A flavorful bomb of soulful Motown aromas, Paradise Garage-esque suavity and shuffling house rhythms brought to a hedonistic simmer, the trio’s latest packs the kind of debonair charm and infectious funk that shall make as much damage on the dance floor as it will in the alcove.

Since moving to Berlin in 2020, MAYTRA has been an integral part of a propitious crew of musicians whose work seeks to place emphasis on live, expressive music whilst drawing influences from the more soulful incarnations of House, Jazz, Hip Hop and Funk.

Alongside Lewis Moody and Ziggy Zeitgeist, MAYTRA runs Energy Exchange Records; a pocket they have formed for breezy and esoteric jams from the inner circle as well as other artists such as Rhythm Section affiliates 30/70, goodmood and Yobrudi.

Here, MAYTRA slides neatly into the beautifully varied catalogue of Brooklyn based label Toucan Sounds with a trio of chic, accomplished tunes that dial in a tone that sits somewhere between Larry Heard, Kyle Hall and Jazzbois.

‘Only Fans’ ft. Digital Liquid, taken from Joseph Malik’s acclaimed ‘Proxima Ebony’ album of last year, gets the first-class remix treatment from London’s legendary production duo, X-Press 2. Joseph delivers an impactful vocal, waxing lyrical on his memories of being brought up around sex workers, underpinned by Digital Liquid’s acid worm lead, as X-Press 2 unleash a sublime dance floor slayer loaded with catchy hooks, jackin’ beat wizardry and dynamic production. Propelling the song into another stratosphere, the duo have created the chugging Lo-Fi 'Back Room' behemoth, armed with slo-mo breakbeats and a badass dubby bass groove, culminating in hypnotic groover that would make the late and great Mr Weatherall very proud.

Scotland’s Joseph Malik has crafted a fantastic catalogue of music over the decades and is highly respected for his distinctively soulful voice and on point song writing skills. Together with co-producer, David Donnelly, he released his first album, ‘Diverse Part 1’ (Compost) in 2002. This was followed by ‘Aquarius Songs’ album (2004), and ‘Diverse Part 2’ album (2018) on Ramrock Records which was ‘Album of the Month’ on Gilles Peterson’s BBC 6Music show. Joseph’s ‘Diverse Part 3’ album (2018) was Craig Charles’ BBC 6Music ‘Album of the Year’. Joseph then released ‘Diverse Part 3 Variant Issue’, the remix album (2022) and most recently his outstanding ‘Proxima Ebony’ album (2023) on Ramrock Records to great acclaim.

London’s X-Press 2 have been at the vanguard of British electronic music for three decades. In that time this acclaimed DJ and production duo, alongside Ashley Beedle, have turned out many hits. Both Rocky and Diesel have a truly pioneering spirit that fueled early nineties underground anthems such as the percussive ‘Muzik Express’, ’Kill 100’, the 2003 Ivor Novello Award winning single ‘Lazy’ and ‘Give It,’ with vocalists Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner. They’ve continued to turn out powerful club cuts such as ‘Tonehead Chemistry’ and ‘Siren Track’, and recently delivered big remixes for Gabriels, David Holmes, JIM and David Kitt. To date, X-Press 2 have released 4 albums, including their recently released, ‘Thee’, album on Acid Jazz. Rocky and Diesel are still fanatical about the music they play and produce, they still very much have their finger on the pulse and continue to lead from the front.

Singapore-based producer mermaids announces the release of "Thought Shuffle," a mesmerizing deep lofi house track that marks the project's triumphant return for 2025. The single, set for release on August 15th under SEAlectors, features the evocative saxophone work of Roxy Modesto, a staple of both jazz and rock landscapes in The Philippines and Indonesia.

"Thought Shuffle" serves as a bookend to mermaids' pandemic-era "Flat Curver" series, continuing the project's exploration of intimate, home-listening experiences while maintaining dancefloor sensibilities. The track represents a natural evolution in the mermaids sound, weaving together tinges of improvised jazz elements with the project's signature blend of warm chords and subtly energetic percussion.

"I wanted to make a track that bridges my previous work with the current sound I’m dropping at my DJ sets across Southeast Asia," explains the artist. "The improvised nature of Roxy’s sax adds this organic human element on top of the music I produced in a DAW. It's like finding clarity in the noise we all experience more and more of.”

“This was also the first mermaids track that I mixed through our large format analog console. The nature of analog mixing is quite different compared to working in a DAW, and there are a lot of factors and inconsistencies that can affect the sound in a pleasant way. Our Soundcraft TS12 has been in use since the 80s when it was part of legendary TRACKS Studios in Manila, and mixing with it in the analog domain imparted a lot of its charm and vibe.”

True to the mermaids aesthetic, "Thought Shuffle" creates an atmosphere perfectly suited for quiet morning coffee rituals or providing gentle motivation during long workdays. The track's sophisticated production showcases his influences from Chicago and Detroit house legends while maintaining the lo-fi textures that have become synonymous with the project's sound.

Roxy Modesto's saxophone performance adds layers of emotional depth, creating melodic conversations between acoustic warmth and digital precision. The collaboration represents mermaids' continued commitment to featuring diverse artists across Southeast Asia, building bridges between regional music scenes.

Another year that is coming to an end.
Here is my Best Of SOULFUL & DISCO of this year 2019.
A selection of 15 tracks played in all my sets this year.
A playlist full vibe and disco groove. Lots of tracks remixed by Joey Negro which was yet another very productive this year. That why he finish number one producer in the disco categories on traxsource.
I also included the amazing T-Connection remixed by Moplen, but also the fabulous remix of Jamiroquai cosmic girl by our great French producer DJ I named Dimitri From Paris.
Two great remix Sylvester by Opolopo and Michael Gray that everyone knows.
The essential soulful house track by The Vision - Heaven re-edited by Danny Krivit played in a lot of clubs and many great DJ this year.
I would like to thank everyone who played my Re-Edits that I released this year.
But also the bars clubs of Nancy, Metz and Rennes which gave me the chance to be able to express my love for the music that I loved since now 15 years.
Let's meet in 2020 with other new events and new Re-Edits that will release soon.
