Formed from the chain-smoked ashes of Wellington’s Quincy Conserve, Malcolm Hayman’s unofficial training academy for session and touring pros, The 1860 Band was initially concurrent with the Quincys but eventually killed off its parent group when it proved the more popular of the two with pub patrons.

While Hayman continued with Captain Custard, The 1860 Band – whose name was imaginatively taken from the Lambton Quay tavern at which it held an extended Saturday afternoon residency – kept drinkers happy with a selection of jazz, funk and disco grooves, culminating in the release of their self-titled 1978 debut and swansong, now a very sought-after item by rare groove hunters the world over.

More notable for its stellar line-up than for ongoing musical achievements, the ensemble was led by trombonist and conductor Rodger Fox.

In 2017, Fox told Radio NZ, "we were all playing four nights a week! These places were rammed. In those days, there’d often be a rugby game on in the middle of the afternoon, and then great hordes of people would be coming down Adelaide Road afterwards to drink beer and dance.

That 1860 Band album is really just songs we played every night live.”
However, shortly after the album release, took several members on to the rather more prestigious Rodger Fox Big Band.

Keyboardist Peter Blake went on to write and perform synth-based television theme tunes that etched themselves into the minds of a generation and was an important producer and director for TV's Radio With Pictures in the 1980s. The guitar and bass playing brothers Martin and Rob Winch (formerly of Auckland jazz-fusion band Dr Tree and rock band Tamburlaine, respectively) carved out a niche as successful session guys and jingle writers before their untimely deaths in 2011 and 2012. 

In 2017, 'That’s the Kind of Love I’ve Got for You', the single taken from that increasingly valuable 1978 album (itself a cover of a 1974 single by Californian soul singer Rita Jean Bodine, also later covered by Dusty Springfield), was included by Alan Perrott on the NZ funk collection Heed The Call.

Loredana Bertè (born September 20, 1950) is an Italian singer, born in Bagnara Calabra, Province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy. In her long career she has worked with some of the best Italian songwriters such as Enrico Ruggeri, Pino Daniele, Ivano Fossati, Mario Lavezzi, Enzo Jannacci and Mango, among others. 

She has experimented with different genres, from rock to reggae, from funk to pop.  She started her singing career in 1974 with the album ‘Streaking’, becoming successful the following year by releasing "Sei bellissima", a ballad that would have become one of her biggest hits, and the Normale o Super album.

In 1977 the album T.I.R. updated her sound, and two years later the LP Bandabertè spawned the hits "Dedicato", "E la Luna bussò" (the first Italian reggae song), "Folle città", and "Robin Hood".

Loredana next released two albums with a strong funk vibe. The first was Loredanabertè (1980) which included the huge hit "In alto mare"; the song was covered in 2004 by the group 2 black. 

In 1981 Bertè released Made in Italy, recorded with the American funk group Platinum Hook. The album included the single "Movie", probably the first Italian song featuring rap.

My relationship with Dave goes back to 2020. I had asked Chuggin Edits to do a special lovers mix for Valentine’s. In that mix was an early version of Dave’s edit of Barabara Streisand’s “Promises”. I was completely blown away. At that point DiCE_NZ was completely new to me, and I quickly learned that Dave’s work carries a love and an attention to detail, that I have found great inspiration in through the work on our Highrollers series, that by now has reached #7 and world wide acclaim for exactly that. 

Here’s Dave’s take on a crucial classic, a track people approach with either recklessness or great caution and respect. To me this is the definitive rework of “Keep Forgetting.”

Bruce and I have established a weird tradition. He comes swooping in close to deadline with these compilations and every time delivers a track of blinding beauty and quality. 
Bruce does the most potent reworks and has a style completely his own. 
Apart from that, AND DJing, Bruce runs his radioshow/podcast Recluse Radio, which is one of my favorite shows on the planet. I asked him about where he got the moniker The Loneliest Hunk, and he replied: “oh it’s a funny story really….” never getting back to me on it. At this point I assume it’s his dashing good looks being locked on New Zealand all alone, with DiCE_NZ.
