Disco Arabesquo @ Red Light Radio (29.01.2019)

Back in 1981 this family band was formed called 4 M! It was composed of actor Ezzat abu el Ouf together with his sisters and cousins. This song was a hit back in 80's Cairo when the cassette was revolutionalizing the music industry. This song was played a lot on weddings, as you can hear the song has a really nice swing. Imagine how awesome those weddings should have been. #discoarabesquo

This awesome Arabic song is by the Lebanese Maya Yazbek. The vinyl was released back in 1987. The name of this powerful song is 'Sho Badak Minny', which is a Lebanese expression meaning 'What do you want'. In the chorus she sings 'I told him: what do you want from me, what do you want. Whatever I want, I do, I do, what do you want! Nobody is better than the other ... '

This cassette has so many good songs on it, it was very hard to choose which one I should post, but I choose this one ’cause it hits hard from the start and the attitude of the singers is awesome. This group is composed out of five siblings. When the group stopped , the male singer, Ezat abou el Ouf, became more famous because he got into a lot of Egyptian movies and soaps. He often played the bad guy! In the song I really adore the bridge where Ezat Abou el Ouf startes going ‘ya leily ya einy …’, that part is the best blend between western disco vibes and the Arabic traditional influences I found untill now. So dreamy, so disco! Did I already say I was born too late, would have loved to get down and boogie to this one in 80’s Cairo.

This song called ‘Tirilla’ is from the Nubian-Egyptian singer Vicka. This song used to be a popular hit in the early 90’s that was heard out of microbusses that where honking and playing this tune. It was the only hit that Vicka put forward and I always imagined whether he had made other cassettes. While digging in Cairo I remember coming across another cassette of his with his name and the date the cassette was put forward. I put it aside while digging for more cassettes but I lost track of it when trying to find it again. Still wondering how it would have sounded. Hopefully one day the stars will be alligned and it will bring us together once again! For now, let’s just enjoy this awesome low quality sound with high quality catchiness!

One of the most unique allround popartists of the Arab 80’s and early 90’s is the beautiful Simone. Her songs are very light and happy! She covered a lot of western popsongs in Arabic, but her original songs are very cool as well! This taxi song is an Arabic cover of the song Frankie by Sister Sledge, but she didn’t use the instrumental of that song. The instruments were re-produced which gave it a totally different feel. This song has a higher pitch than the Sister Sledge original that better suits Simone’s voice. This song feels very youthfull, that although it’s from ’87 I feel like it is very contemporary. It’s a piece about a girl who is trying to stop a taxi so she won’t be late for her date. Timeless!

Ramadan Mubarak everybody! Ramadam is a month of vasting, and also of spirituality and contemplation. I would like to introduce to you, Fouad Abdel Migied. On New Year's eve 1980 Fouad Abdel Migied was on Egyptian tv for the first time at the age of 54. Before that time he was hesitant to become popular or to sing in front of big audiences because he was asking himself whether music is haram. Because of this unresolved question he had sung for 30 years behind closed doors, in salons with friends. He researched and asked different Islamic scholars untill he was convinced of an answer. This answer was: 'Music can be both haram or halal, it is the message that you portray through the music that determines which one it is.' And this answer is what brought us this amazing soul with lived experience and music full of poetic mu'ashi7at fuzed with orchestral compositions by Abdel Halim Nuwera. Two different schools of art blended into this one of a kind song.

This cassette I saw at the Bongo Joe store in Switzerland, and the guys were so friendly to let me digitize the cassette. Remastered the sound a bit, hope you will enjoy! #RamadanMubarak

A while back I stumbled upon a cassette titled 'Team 2000' ٢٠٠٠فريق, I hadn't heard of them before so I rushed home to listen to the cassette. When I got there I found out that the cassette inside was different from the cover. But as it's normally a dissapoinment to find another cassette than expected, this time it was far from that. It was 'The Jets' الجيتس one of the first Egyptian 'Franco-Arab' bands that started out in the 70's. This cassette has an Arabic cover of Boney M - Rasputin titled 'Abd el Rotin', the name of a fictional officer working at a bureaucratic organization. 📑

I love cassettes for many reasons. 💕 One of those reasons is that people who used to own the cassette by accident press the record button ⏺ in stead of the play button ▶️, and record whole conversations in Arabic. Often a pitty that its recorded on top of the original rare recording, but in this particular instance it was somewhat cool and not by accident. The owner of the cassette recorded a voicememo to some friends/family whom he wanted to let them hear the cassette. I imagine him sitting at home close to the window/balcony in the late 80's/early 90's as you can hear children playing outside and probably some caged birds on his balcony.

So now my friends and family, let's listen to Noah (نوح) and his funky poetic song called 'La tinsana' (Don't forget about us). Maybe we'll hear something we'll like. 🕊
