Returning to Exploited for another bite of the cherry, Italian duo gizA djs are back.
‘Something Cool’ blends elements of indie dance and nu disco in its loose, warm feel, with a dash of Italo disco attitude to boot. ‘80s synth pulses set the tone over live percussion and subtle bass, before a sultry male vocal adds more retro feel to the proceedings. Classic disco hi-hats drop in as the vocal switches from English to seductive Italian and big synth chords filter into focus. A sweet arpeggiated lead line thrusts into play as a Daft Punk-esque electric bassline funks away below. An unexpectedly wonky breakdown builds tension, setting us up for a colourful finale where the key elements morph and modulate in a beautiful fusion.

‘Rogue One’ is more of a brooding, atmospheric house affair, but one that comes with dashes of funk. Tribal percussion intersperses a turgid bass groove as mystical trumpet loops tease in and out of the mix. A discofied guitar lick bolsters an infectious, mysterious plucked melody, and imperceptibly the track builds intensity to a crescendo with eerie pads, heady reverbs, ride cymbals, urgent vocal chants and judicious use of FX.

4 big ol’ chunks of heavy house music are the order of the day from New York producer Ralph Session’s hot new EP for Black Jukebox. Combining his skills as a musician and seasoned DJ along with the technical know-how from his work as an audio engineer, the result is a collection of beautifully crafted, hard-hitting house cutz.
‘That Raw’ features a breathy spoken-word vocal from DJ Amir—one half of the legendary duo Kon & Amir—that laces the soulful, deep production with a hypnotic atmosphere. Thick bass bubbles beneath soaring strings and meandering synth arpeggios to give the track a set-building, big-room feel. ‘Do It’ rocks jaunty snatches of piano and sax over its peppy, skippy beat, with a little New Jersey feel in its incessant, phat-bottomed grove. ‘If You Want’ takes us into a deeper direction with its hazy pad work and dubby touches, with a slinky, rubbery bass groove that throbs hard beneath it all. Dawn's Approaching (Psychemagik Remix)

Hot on the heels from releases on Ivan Smaggle’s Les Disques De La Mort and Cormac’s Polari; Zillas on Acid prepare their debut EP for Jordan Nocturne's Belfast based label, featuring three impressive acid-drenched cuts and a stellar remix from Vanessa Worm - an artist whose impressive debut album on Optimo Music was one of the stand-out releases of 2020.

The clue’s in the name, and while acid may be the centerpiece of the EP, each track varies in sonic sensibility as we delve deeper into the duo's futuristic sound palette.

Title track Sorry I Was In VR is a serotonin-boosting chugger with earwriggle synth stabs that highlight the pair's ear for melody, while From Afar - futuristic and bold - blends other-worldly sounds with brooding percussion. Vanessa Worm's rendition goes back to basics with a muscular drum-led approach; punchy kicks and bouncy aesthetics churning out a hypnotic wobbler that highlights the euphoria that can be discovered in simplicity.

He Wasn't Afraid... is a downtempo voyage drawn in distinct and vivid colour. Deep bass notes and twangling synths hang in dark space while an acid arpeggio glides through the twinkling vortex. “He wasn’t afraid” cries out in the distance, giving us the push to move forward, one step at a time.

Nocturne has a holistic approach to each release - combining art, music and meaning at every turn. With its roots firmly planted in Belfast and one eye on the rest of the world - 2021 is set to be a busy year for the young forward-thinking imprint.
