Twelve kettles later and I’m still here,
 same chipped mug, same “you alright, dear?”
 Steam round my knuckles like a votive prayer,
 breath makes halos in the kitchen air.
 I ain’t holy, I’m just stubborn warm,
 I keep calm water through every storm.
 Bit of loose leaf, bit of milk in first,
 bit of “yeah I’m fine,” bit of almost burst.
 Life ain’t grand, it’s rinse and pour,
 wipe the table, sweep the floor.
 Bit of bad news, bit of “go on then,”
 bit of “we’ll get through,” and “tell me when.”
 It’s not fireworks, love, it’s habit,
 soft resilience, proper rabbit.
 It’s “you sit down, I’ll put brew on,”
 it’s “I’m not leaving, I’ll stay ’til dawn.”
 Faith ain’t loud, it’s kettle hiss,
 it’s forehead kiss, it’s “drink this.”

 gentle made, and gentle paid.
 Little warmth in a world that’s mad,
 “have a sip, babe, tell me what’s bad.”

I seen people talk big on “forever,”
 I don’t trust that, I trust “whenever.”
 As in “whenever you need, I’ll show,”
 as in “whenever you call, I’ll go.”
 Forever’s cheap, babe. Forever’s chat.
 “Put the kettle on”, that’s that.
 That’s gospel here, that’s law round mine,
 warm up the room ’til your bones align.
 Ain’t romance, really. It’s maintenance.
 It’s keeping the pilot light lit in us.
 It’s you in my hoodie at stupid o’clock,
 it’s me half asleep but I’ll still unlock.
 It’s “shut the fridge, you’re letting heat out,”
 it’s “you’re not eating, what’s that about?”
 It’s quiet rage at the shape of your hurt,
 holding back storms with a stained old shirt.
 It’s soft, yeah. But soft ain’t weak.
 It’s “sip slow, talk slow, you can speak.”
 It’s “you don’t have to be good tonight,”
 “cry if you need, yeah? that’s alright.”


Twelve kettles later, love, I stayed,
 gentle made, and gentle paid.
 “Lean on me, we’ll count to three,
 I’ll do first breath, then you breathe.”
 Twelve kettles later, I ain’t grand,
 I ain’t saved you, I just stand.
 That’s the vow, quietly,
 you and me and a cup of tea.


Look, you don’t owe me “fixed.”
 Don’t owe sunshine, don’t owe mixed.
 You can sit there, dead silent, blue,
 I’ll still top up, I’ll sit too.
 That’s care, innit? Not repair.
 Not “be happy,” just “I’m there.”
 Everyone loves you when you’re fine,
 I love you when you’re borderline.
 When you’re weird with it, numb with it, low with it, gone,
 when you can’t do brave and you can’t keep on,
 and your hair’s all mad and you ain’t washed yet,
 that’s when I’ll make tea and not ask, “upset?”
 We don’t fling wisdom, babe, that’s rude.
 We feed people. We pass food.
 We hold shoulders. We keep watch.
 We shift weight and we don’t keep score, scotch.
 It’s just: “I’ll carry it ’til you can, yeah?”
 “I’ll hold the line ’til you stand, yeah?”

 Warm hands, cold forehead.

Couple of bills on the counter stack,
 couple of “later, I’ll call ’em back,”
 couple of aches in the lower spine,
 couple of lies when we say “I’m fine.”
 But look, we’re still here. That’s mad.
 World did worst and we still had
 toast, and jokes, and stupid shows,
 and socks on the rad by your pink toes.
 We still found room to hum some song,
 still found “love you” in all that wrong.
 That’s holy work, that is. Truly.
 Not church holy, kitchen holy.
