Next Summer is a journey through the on-going lockdown and summarizes Semodi’s work in his Berlin Kreuzberg studio during the pandemic winter months of late 2021. While tiresome for everybody, for Semodi it was also a time of inspiration and musical exploration crossing the boundaries of genres. Coming back from his walks through the streets of Kreuzberg, he often brought home a new melody that he could then craft into his music.

Ultimately Semodi came up with three distinct tracks and presents us with a touching and emotional record that reflects his perception and experiences during the lockdown. He thus opens up a musical perspective to this special time, that we can all relate to. While “Into Deep” is an older and more techno composition that found its way onto the record, Semodi started to work with singers to implement an element of storytelling into his more recent works.

For the title track “Next Summer” Semodi teamed up with his partner Maïlys who tells her story of the lockdown in Berlin with nothing to do outside and her desire to go out and do things again. Her spoken-word performance is embedded in a dry beat accompanied by a simple but melodic bass line. And as Maïlys expresses her hope for the time after the lockdown and her desire to dance again next summer, the music opens up and illustrates her hope with melodic arpeggios.

“Oh Boy” is a deep and driven piece of music that guides the listener into a dreamy and psychedelic parallel universe. Guest artist Antigone adds a mesmerizing dimension to the track and completes the picture with her outstanding vocal performance.

With Melokind, Nico Pusch and Theus Mago three skilled remixers contribute their personal interpretations of Semodi’s tracks to the record and thus broaden the multitude of genres to choose from.

While Melokind delivers a deep, melodic version of “Oh Boy” that radiates the positive warmth of a festival afternoon, Nico Pusch contributes an up-tempo tech house version of the same track that will work nicely on peak time main floors. Theus Mago presents us with his never-ending-lockdown psychedelic remix of “Next Summer”.

The German label-founder spoke on what the release embodies, stating: “Music From Space (Dimension A) is the brand new edition of this compilation concept, which you can take literally as it comes. I’m very happy to have collected eight exclusive tracks from the likes of Swedish Lady Molø, our newest signing Pôngo, ex-youngster Rodriguez Jr. and many more besides.”

Italian pairing Hunter / Game begin the journey with No Man’s Land, a slow-building piece packed full of ethereal synths and cosmic-themed vocal tones. Croatia’s Petar Dundov ups the tempo on Andante, showcasing his hallmark techno-trance sound through poignant chords and driving kick-hat combos, before longstanding Systematic affiliate Rodriguez Jr. arrives with Mare Serenitatis. A six-minute showcase in stripped-back, melodic groove, the celestial cut rises and falls with a gentle lucidity, opening beautifully into Fleut. Produced by rising Swedish artist Molø, shimmering keys
reside atop whispering hats to create an introspective dancefloor number, paving the way for the VA’s first collaboration: Eternity, courtesy of Systematic head Marc Romboy and Bedrock regular Oniris.
Breaks-inspired percussion marries up next to hauntingly-beautiful string solos, as the sounds of Germany and France collide.

Original techno luminary Scan X makes his label debut with Stellar Nebula, a late-night creeper that represents extraterrestrial worlds far removed from ours. We’re soon graced with the starry-eyed sounds of Pôngo, whose vocal offering leaves us in a state of reflection on Blind, before Munich mainstay Julian Wassermann transports us to martian territory with The Red Planet. An apt title, it acts as the penultimate track on the VA and sets the tone for the final collaborative effort:Neutron, produced by two electronic music veterans in the form of Oliver Linge and Olaf Pozsgay.

Marc Romboy’s Systematic imprint has built up a global following ever since its inception sixteen years ago. Inspired by the sounds of his Chicago heroes, Marc launched the label in 2005 and has since gone on to welcome an eclectic array of producers to the fold, from Mike Dunn to Fur Coat and a myriad of fellow talent. Ransom Note Records present new signing Natasha Bai, with her debut EP ‘Transsib’; an oneiric voyage through the world of the Russian DJ, musician, producer and vocalist.

“Transsib, short for ‘Trans-Siberian Railway’ is the 9000 km of railroad that connects Moscow with Vladivostok on the Russian Far East. The building of the Transsib Railway helped the founding of my hometown many years ago; Novosibirsk. It’s 50 hours by train from Novosibirsk to Moscow and during this time little life happens” - Natasha Bai

Promoter of the legendary Siberian group «Сто Своих» in the early 2010’s, Natasha Bai now lives in Moscow and plays at the likes of Simachev Bar and tours Russia with «ДК Детка» (‘de-ka-detka’). She is also an NTS, Kiosk Radio, Test FM and Gop Tun regular guest and has released two EPs under her ambient-pop alter ego; Altai Princess. Her debut EP on Ransom Note Records features four track blending genres and imaginary worlds.

Opening track ‘Romantiko’ welcomes skitty beats alongside poppy vocal snippets summoning electro kicks; engaging sonic distortion and synth melodies. “It’s like a bright sunny morning when you wake up happy”.

Title track ‘Transsib’ is a stand-out on the EP for its proggy-trance inflection and ethereal synth keys, mimicking “the sounds of a moving train.” A genre-bending frenzy and a rapturing refrain recall the sound of inertia.

‘Your Kiss’ is inspired by “unhappy love, which happens especially when you’re young.” Expect acid euphoria and eagerness for love and lust, where Natashas’s vocals address the subject of romantic distress.

Closing track ‘Just Say’ is “a little intervention” from her alias Altai Princess, whose music focuses on the outer reaches of ambient-pop. The track notches the tempo down in Altai territory, with the kicks atop the longing lyrics “just say there is only me”.

Transsib EP is a symbol of growth, of “moving through life and moving towards your dreams. From my hometown to the city of my dreams, from my first steps in music to my first EP, from childhood through youth to adulthood. It’s a never-ending journey.

When Steve Lawler first sent us “Crazy Dream,” he told us that he had made the record “specifically with Turbo in mind,” thus sending us on a quasi-lucid journey down a rabbit hole of self-discovery from which we have only recently emerged.

Most labels would simply talk up a nuts-to-the-wall floor-filler with a killer “White Horse” bassline from an acid house legend and be done with it, but the fact remains that if we forgo an opportunity to learn more about ourselves as dance music imprint, we are doing our fans a disservice whether they could possibly be expected to realize it or not.

We hired a board-licensed Forensic Poet to parse the track’s lyrical references to nothing being “quite as it seems,” “feeling naked and confused,” and rising above “the push and shove.” What was he trying to tell us? The poet assured us that all it meant was that Lawler admires Turbo and thought the track would be a good fit, and that we should put our clothes back on, wipe the confused looks from our faces, and stop pushing and shoving one another because everything was exactly as it seemed. We paid him his $25 and did as we were told.

For the remixes, we took a track made especially for us and enlisted a diverse cast of Turbo All-Stars to spin it into a release for everyone, a proprietary practice we call "Human Alchemy: The Future of Generosity™.” Finland’s Jori Hulkkonen, Belgium’s Charlotte de Witte, and Argentina’s DJs Pareja trace a beautiful global triangle for lovers of acid bangers, stripped-down techno, and tripped-out weirdness, respectively. At Turbo, giving party people what they need is more than just a crazy dream. It’s a crazy reality.
