The 9th release on Lisbon's dance agitators Rave Tuga is on the way: an EP, available on tape and digital by local mainstay DIOGO, who's been loyally serving the dancefloors of Lisbon in the past few years via his sick DJing and productions. Recruits for the remixer role are other two legends of our scene: genius clubkid Ecstasya and spot-on dance composer Moreno Ácido.

Acid and jacking flavours gladly meet again, with an added ray of local sunshine, on the opener 'Paz d'Alma'. The skillfully programmed 303 lines keep going throughout the album, on the A3 accompanied by a sick electro groove and emotional pads and some bleepy chill-packed vibes on the A4.

The B side switches gears into techno territory, with steady hi hats guiding the groove; relentlessness pervading on 'Brick & Mortar'. Ecstasya steps in to remix the title track with a dramatic take chock-full of hyperpop stabs, sentimental chipmunk vocals and re-constructed clubby beats, the Lisbon way. Moreno Ácido takes the scenic route with dubbed out harmonies and warm, blissed-out beats and bass.

Lisbon's purveyor of dance incantations Paraíso are back with an EP that packs a meeting of 3 legends of the local and global underground - a trio of fearless pioneers and cultural agitators from different eras.

Yen Sung and Photonz have partnered up in 2020 to collaborate on new music and start a record label. Fast forward to today and this Paraíso EP is their third release, further exploring their mutual penchant for ethereal house music drenched in subtle but fiery grooves and acid basslines. Opener 'A Temperança' taps into moody yet bouncy motifs, punctuated by crisp claps and an infectious 303 line in the vein of DJ Pierre's record 'What is House Music', their confessed influence for this track. Things get slower on the A2 where the title track gets reworked with alternative elements - aptly named Gravity Mix.

The B side continues the metallic acid exploration via 'Akasha', twisting and turning like only expertly crafted basslines do before things blossom into a sunny house groover with enticing percussion and variegated hats. Legendary Angolan-Portuguese producer DJ Satélite steps in for remix duties, adding his iconic deep afro house edge to a wonderful effect, all blissful motifs and broken percussive sonics.

Off-beat toms and rim shots paired with squelchy, slippery, acid make the opener, 'Galactic Federation', feel as bouncy and polyrhythmic as a non 4/4 track, playing a delicious illusion on the audience - completed emotionally by beautifully textured stabs and pads that speak of longing and perhaps of ethical space exploration to escape the pains of this Earth.
Reverb-drenched arpeggio acid and digital choirs welcome the listener in a grandiose, almost goth-like way, offset by an improvisational, on-the-go arrangement spirit, an impression that is met by the track title 'Jamming in Dracula's Castle'.
The B side opens with fat kicks and bass, its textures reminiscent of dutch and Belgian rave traditions; expertly merged with a Moroder-like synth-a-delic motif - always propulsed by that driving, taking-no-prisoners bass and acid lines.
The last track of the EP takes us to sunlight-drenched territories in comparison, with a warm sub bass and classic breaks serving as a base to another one of Lake Haze's expertly programmed acid lines.
The beautiful pads and melodies prevail, but the feeling in this closing number gives us an optimistic glimpse into a better future, after an EP that is about showing us some moodier, shadowy emotional rave bangers.

Paraíso no Passos: Catarina Silva 04.03.2023

For the 12th release on Paraíso, co-founder Shcuro strips things back to assert what truly remains no matter much time may pass.

‘It Lasts Forever’ is the producer’s ode to structural things in his inner life that will keep flowing on unchanged, be it the love for his wife; his reverence to techno - hence the use of classic drum machines like Roland’s 909, 808 and 707; to friendship and community - having one of his dearest mates Steffi take part via the remixer chair.

Steffi picks up the opening track and adds propulsive percussion and further melodic elements to it, creating the perfect gem to close this record.

It Lasts Forever

PREMIERE: Shcuro - Together (Steffi Remix) [Paraíso]

Lisbon continues to thrive musically and Violet is one of the city's most active artists. Paraíso is her natural habitat - she contributed to the first-ever record on the label and has remained in its inner circle.

'New Visions' is Violet's testament of a love for ever-evolving sonic languages while doing a notable job in encapsulating her myriad influences. From the acid-tinged, moodier palette of the One Eyed Jacks days to the jungle-influenced sounds expressed in her latest works to the very early influence of 90s portuguese dance music, this EP embraces it all - and then some.

The title track seems to speak of hope and resistance, layering oneiric arpeggiated bleeps with deconstructed breaks and a heavy sub that morphs into a drone wave, washing emotions anew. Kaos V, admittedly a homage to the sound of the iconic label Kaos that pioneered a local, stripped down dance sound in Lisbon, sounds like a mysterious prophecy, equal parts ancient and futuristic.

Junqueira is a left-of-centre roller that resorts to metallic synths, raw drums and even a digi cello to manifest a sense of club unity. The record closes with the slower-paced syncopated groove of High In Forest Hill: a dancehall-referencing bass sits under acid modulations, eerie vocal synths and a snare drum that just won't stand still.

Since participating in the Red Bull Music Academy 2008, Violet has made a name for herself as one of the most inventive producers on the Portuguese dance music scene. Her latest EP, 'New Visions', shows off her colorful palette and varied brushstrokes in four intriguingly dissimilar tracks. Starting off the record's b-side, "Junqueira" demonstrates Violet's ability to sculpt each element in a tune with utmost precision. There's something almost unsettling about the track and yet it keeps the wheels spinning with its propulsive groove.
