There are a lot of favourite artists involved in this release, peeps: Rising Turkish producers Günce Aci (SXDNS129) and Fat&Bald (a project run by Ortac Genc) joined forces and delivered two powerful original cuts for the 11th release of the acclaimed label Belly Dance Services, curated by the beloved duo Hanzo & Yaman (SXDNS065). “Being and Nothingness EP” comes also with mighty remixes made with love by two of the most established virtuosos of the so-called Dark Disco/Indie Dance scene: Mexican Theus Mago (SXDNS056) and Guatemalan Fabio Me Llaman Soltero (SXDNS187). We chose the remix by the latter to review/premiere.

Owner of a very peculiar sonority, FMLS has been shaking the world with a lot of talent, charisma, and bathrobes (many bathrobes). His interpretation of the title track comes with an exquisite fusion of Latin and Orient elements, resulting in an extremely intricate version. If the original theme combines Günce’s characteristic dark trippy soundscape with Ortac’s rock-infused melodies, Fabio’s 'Neoson' remix can be best described as a beautiful sound mess. Nothing that will surprise his followers; after all, they (we included) are already used to seeing him wreaking havoc in both his performances and productions.

The opener track gives the name to the EP, a reflection of a weird nightmare, where spoken language had been abandoned and people communicated exclusively through dance moves and binary code. Robust bass, desolated synthesizers, distorted voices, glitches, and a high sugar percussion set from Rocco Desentis bring the track to life.

One of the reasons Mexico is such a strong reference when it comes to high-quality underground electronic music is because of its competently curated labels. Here is a new one: Kyma Komplex has started its journey only last January with a mesmerising single by Corresponsal & Veltrán, the label owner himself, but has already started drawing the attention amid the Indie Dance/Dark Disco community.

For its second instalment, the promising imprint brings back the aforementioned duo, this time accompanied by an interesting trio of young remixers, though: Manu Barcelo, Sixtoagusto (SXDNS031), and Ives Barceló, who delivered made with love interpretations of “Delirio”, the title track.

Premiered here, Manu Barcelo’s bold version brings the game to a more House Music court. Speeding up things “just” a little bit – from 104 to 118 BPM –, the Argentinian producer infused the original with flush percussive elements and menacing distorted layers in order to replace, competently, the Post-Punk aura of Corresponsal & Veltrán’s cut.

One of the most important traits at Quixotical Records is uniqueness, music that stands out. No exception is the latest release "Pilots Lounge" by Nickelson who perfectly fulfills the vision of how it should sound. Two original tracks "Negative Energy" and "Pilots Lounge" with two remixes by the founder of Cowbell Radio - Ed Mahon and head of In Dark We Trust - Berny, make this release an absolute banger for the dark disco dance floor.

Bold and brave attempt, tries to be more than the primary source. Intimidation and projection of self-reliance are the main means of propulsion. Not as exquisite as the original, very mature in a sense of presenting what it is. This is one of those situations, where the so-called copy of an original work, is attempting to step over the bounds and propose, that it's a higher-caliber, more polished piece of art. Distancing is a unique quality of this remix, and it can be a perfect governor, but so as the roots. I believe, both of those things were well balanced and the result is as pleasing as it can be.

PREMIERE : Nickelson - Pilots Lounge (Ed Mahon Remix)

When Greco-German couple Local Suicide (@localsuicide) and New York City native Curses (@cursesforever) met in Berlin, the epicenter of electronic music, their artistic chemistry was immediately obvious. This chance meeting resulted in several fructuous collaborations, with the latest being ‘Magia’, a dark and mysterious four-track EP. This release represents the perfect opportunity for the artists to take the genre-bending blend of 80’s new wave, dark disco and ghostly vocals that have earned their previous collaborations unanimous praise to a whole new level. 

The EP comes after an impressively prolific year for the ever-busy Local Suicide powerhouse, following the release of their globally acclaimed debut album ‘Eros Anikate’ with collaborations with The Hidden Cameras, Lena Platonos, Theus Mago and Curses himself, as well as four remixes EPs featuring remixes by household names such as Adana Twins, Silicone Soul, Echonomist, Biesmans, Die Selektion and many more on top of a hectic touring schedule. 

The multi-talented artist and head of the Ombra International label Curses also recently released his darkly romantic second album ‘Incarnadine’ with features from Jennifer Touch and Terr, following an acclaimed first album on Jennifer Cardini's Dischi Autunno imprint. For this collaboration, he lends his distinctive sound signature that incorporates punk, Italo Disco, and EBM influences for a somber and nostalgic sound.

The EP’s title track ‘Magia’, immediately puts the listener under its spell with its dystopian atmosphere, as cold and distant voices echo eerily behind the relentless beat and unsettling looping synths, before layering up into an intense but also strangely hopeful soundscape.  

The beautifully complex and moody ‘It All Sounds The Same’ then follows with its ethereal and ghostly vocals bleeding through the urgent rhythm. The alliteration of the lyrics contributes to creating an otherworldly, almost uneasy feeling echoed by the lonely voices lamenting that everything ‘sounds the same’.  

The third track ‘Secret Friends’ opens up with cascading acid notes soon overtaken by the same driving beat as pulsing synths overlap each other in a frenzy while the vocals call out for a ‘secret friend’ with the seductive appeal of a mysterious, almost supernatural being. 

Far from alleviating the tension that has been building up throughout the EP, the closing track, ‘Walk With Me’, feels like a frenzied and Lynchian musical descent into madness, as insistent notes become more and more distorted until they’re swallowed by the bassline and electric notes while barely human voices whisper menacingly, gasping and crossing overhead.

Last spotted on the inaugural 'Muy Duro' volume, Russian duo Wolfstream jump aboard Theus Mago's unstoppable Duro vehicle with their first full EP for the label. And they're taking full navigational controls.

'Khoomei' sets the parameters. A widescreen slab of lolloping percussive dark disco characterised by the unique Mongolian throat singing it takes its name from, there's a state of transcendence as we lock tighter and tighter to the loose-flowing groove.

The same can be said for 'From Z To Ulu'. Once again bringing human voices to the rhythmic table, there's a palpable soul coded deep into late night synthetic groove. Best compared to Black Strobe at their peak, there's a deep 3am mischief that's amplified consummately by Hanzo & Yaman on their remix.

Complete with a synth bass slapping remix of 'Khoomei' from the Duro boss Theus himself, we conclude with 'Avacha Bay Hunters'. A tempestuous rolling slice of percussive hypnotica, the explorative theme persists right through to the very finale. Taking its name and spirit from the furthest Russian outpost, right on the nose of the Pacific ocean, once again Wolfstream take us to places we've never knew existed in more ways than one.. Buen viaje.
