Live All Vinyl Mix - History Lesson - Selected Stateside & Homegrown House & Garage from 1990 – 1994

The mid-70s was tough time for New York. The city's reputation for crime and disorder still very much a part of residents daily lives - with then Mayor, Ed Koch repeatedly warning that the ‘dirt, crime, and racial tension continued to weaken the once great city’. 

The illegal drug trade flourished, causing a soaring murder rate, and dividing the city into areas ruled by different drug lords. The NYC Subway fell victim to a crime epidemic that saw more crimes being committed on the subway each year than in any other subway system in the world. Landlords would burn tenant buildings for insurance money – displacing hundreds of people.

Between 1970 and 1980, 40% of the South Bronx had been burned down or abandoned. 

From these ashes, NYC spawned and supported the birth of Disco, Hip Hop, Post Punk & New Wave. 

Here’s a love letter to those critical years - by no means a definitive list, but a collage of genres, loosely hanging together with the help of some tape delay. 

Musical nods to the people that drove this creativity; Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Larry Levan, François Kevorkian, Tee Scott, David Mancuso, John ‘Jelly Bean’ Benitez, Boyd Jarvis, Tony Humphries and artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol and the avant garde, art rock and self-proclaimed ‘freaks, dropouts and wackos’: Konk, Talking Heads, Pylon, Chic, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Liquid Liquid, Blondie & Suicide. 

This collective ‘sound’ would bleed out into the ether, through clubs and radio, out to Chicago and Detroit and ultimately, the world; Disco would mutate into House, Rap’s ‘five elements’ would settle into Hip-Hop and the low-fi, outsider aesthetic of Post-Punk & New Wave would continue to inspire the best of bands. Both then and now. 

Put together lovingly with two 1210’s, a two channel mixer and a space echo – here’s a snapshot of NYC 1978 – 1986 (mistakes and all).

It's 2012. The easiest way to distribute music is to pass an edit to a few blogs with hopes it will feature.

Brussels nightlife stalwarts, Lady Jane and Simon LeSaint did just that - sending out into the ether their incredible edit of a 1986 pop cut. The internet responded in force - with support across the board - a milestone being an endorsement from Groove Armada on BBC's 6 Music and a Bicep blog nod.

Discotheque Credits now present the original edit remastered and backed with a more Italo-focused, club-heavy dub. 'An edit that's stood the test of time and never left the record box. We're delighted Lady Jane and Simon LeSaint have allowed Discotheque Credits to bring it to a new audience".
