Dream Weapons present: SEVEN SUTRAS C60 ☾

Art has its triptychs, religion has its trinities and Prabha Devi has finally finished the unholy collection of three Sevens. In the very early days of Dream Weapons, Seven Daemons was released. Seven Rays came along a little later, and now finally the penultimate chapter is complete: Seven Sutras.

Though a Sutra is more of poetic roots, the name sounded evocative and fit with the overall theme of "exotic oriental" that runs through the spine of the mix, delving sideways into some Brazilian girl groups and even Mauritius rock. Largely instrumental, but collected to be listened to as a whole album, turn it on during an extra dull winter day and let it brighten up the living room for an hour at least -Prabha Devi

Outsiders: Sonic Imaginaries of Latin-Persia w/ Katayoun @ Kiosk Radio 04.02.2024

Katayoun aka discourse is a boundary-pushing and eclectic DJ, selector, and a longtime digger of Iranian music. With a knack for finding rarities, her mixtapes are skilfully curated, blending soothing melodies and funky rhythms with a soulful ability to shape sonically elusive environments that push beyond borders. As a music archivist and activist, Katayoun curates her sound around particular themes, shedding light on underknown genres and overlooked gems in Iranian music history and beyond, including Jazz and Latin rhythms. Being a dancer herself since early childhood, she knows how to move a dancefloor and engage an audience from beginning to end. Her skill and expertise have brought her to different stages, for example at the Melkweg as the support act of Sevdaliza and many other venues and radio communities across the Netherlands and abroad. This show, Jazz and Funk from Iran and Beyond, travels through jazz and funk from the 70s Iran all the way to sounds from Cairo, Ethiopia, and 'Tehrangeles'.

Sonic Imaginaries is a show by Katayoun with sounds spanning from soulful Persian Avaz to jazzy tunes, upbeat funk, Latin rhythms, and synth from Iran and beyond. Bringing to the fore a host of underknown gems and narratives by way of musical storytelling, Katayoun’s work has long recontextualized Iranian music from the 60s and 70s from a generic realm of ‘nostalgia’ and oblivion into a specific and sonically dynamic space of universality, temporality, and relationality. This iteration muses on visiting Iran’s Funkytown of the 70s – the cosmopolitan city of Tehran – with tracks by Ramesh, Martik, and Hayedeh.

This show explores the marginal yet impactful “Iranian Dance Wave” that emerged in the 1990s–2000s, from the vibrant Iranian diasporic cultural scene in LA, also known as Tehrangeles. While the umbrella term Iranian Dance Wave isn’t widely used, it offers a useful lens for understanding how the music featured in this show is rooted in a transnational sound that also became widely embraced in diasporic Iranian music production of the 90s-2000s. The mixtape is a vision of car and dance music - it weaves together Italo Disco, Eurodance, trance, progressive house, and Tehrangeles pop, genres that shaped my own musical upbringing. Bridging high-energy dancefloor sounds with sonic heritage, the mix features both iconic anthems and hidden gems. It’s a personal reflection and a celebration of a uniquely global sound that continues to resonate across generations and borders.

Born in Paris and living in Barcelona, Maryu is an historical @hors_sol member. Very honored to contribute to Deep House Tehran, he recorded a podcast with his latest discoveries in progressive, minimal & dubby trance, also accompanied by small voices. Each day, Maryu is sensitive to ecology, feminist struggle, animal welfare & deeply revolted by the patriarchy, colonialism, imperialism that lead the men to violence. For this mix, he chose to begin with the following text from the gaza poet Mohammed Moussa, issued to the EP called « GAZA » by the duo Ësenaim. :
