Ian Finkelstein is a jazz pianist and producer. He has been an active member of the Detroit jazz community since the age of 14. A student of Geri Allen, he performed with Marcus Belgrave from 2010 until Belgrave's death in 2015. He currently performs with the Robert Hurst Quintet, and is a founding member of Detroit music collective Video7.

Ian self-released his first album of house music It’s Time in 2016. His keyboard work can be heard on tracks by Scott Grooves, Omar-S and Shigeto among others. He is a regular member of Scott Grooves’ Overdubs.

The Middle Birth EP highlights Ian’s dual talents as a producer and instrumentalist. Side A features two electronic cuts, “Middle Birth” and “Mort Crim” with Ian playing live drums and bass on the latter.  SIDE B showcases Ian’s jazz quartet; he is joined by several of Detroit’s most talented young musicians: Marcus Elliot on sax, Ben Rolston on bass and Alex White on drums.

"Oslo" is built on dueling arps and spacey percussion that together cultivate a swirling deepness. On remix duty, Glasgow's OOFT! delivers a dance floor ready rework with rooted in a chugging 303 and classic stabs, while Berlin's Nils Penner lays down a piece of work perfect for dimly lit rooms. Very excited to share the third release on DISCOVERY Recordings from JKriv and myself. The tracks capture the developing mood of a party - from the early night grooves to peak hour proper house (our take on peak at least).

We ran into our good friend Sammy Bananas at the local pharmacy, he was wearing a red velvet robe and a saxophone raiding the cosmetic section for heatable oils. 

We happened to have a copy of Catalano on us and handed it to him...upon contact we saw reality melt away, the brick and mortar transformed into a foggy stage, grocery carts replaced by speakeasy librarians riding miniature horses. The ground swirled around us and we all started to rise, slowly ascending into beams of purple to bounce of the giant disco ball in the sky, waking up on the sidewalk nearby with nothing but smiles and foggy recollections we discovered Night Braces had been reborn.

Free Magic - Brooklyn Bass Podcast

The fourth release on DISCOVERY Recordings comes from Analog Players Society, a melting pot of musicians led by Amon Drum at The Hook Studio in Brooklyn. 

Coule'Ba is a West African tune featuring the amazing vocal talent of Missia Saran Dibate of Guinea. We hoped to get it last year but the studio and surrounding area were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy (bitch). Amon and his fam spent the following months helping alongside the Red Hook Initiative with those even less fortunate in the area. By the time we got the record ready, it seemed only natural to donate the profits to the organization that did so much for Red Hook during that time.

500 copies, hand stamped bright red 7" vinyl - available late May.

The next release on DISCOVERY Recordings comes from Catamaran, a young NYC based producer who's been coming to the parties and feeling the vibe. He sent us some really tite demos and we got in the studio to make them titer. The tracks are infused with the life of the city - from jackin’ house to lush rhodes grooves. We all love Fort Romeau, so we had him do a remix that takes the sound across the pond. 500 copies, hand stamped, vinyl only.
