To finish up with May at Fake Rolex, we host a sometimes liquid, sometimes deep drumming selection from Elise (@el-se), a DJ that oscillates with prolific talent through genres as UK techno, electro, ghetto house, jungle and between. 

‘I did this podcast a month ago from now when we were still deep into the lockdown here in Paris. Like a lot of people, this period went with a lot of mixed feelings about the future, ups & downs. It was in a bit of a lull moment that I tried to share some kind of “floating acceptance” that I was into on that quarantine day 49’

After 5 years in the Shanghai local scene where she was involved as a DJ, live performer, and occasional promoter, Elise moved to Berlin to focus on her music production, releasing an EP at Man Band Records (2018)(@man-band). 

Now based in Paris, Elise continues to push her sound forward and signed an opening reshape on François X's new imprint Dement3d XXX (@dement3d), with some promising releases in the works as well as a monthly show on Rinse France (@rinse_france).

Diskotopia is proud to present the self-titled EP from Sense of Sense, the debut collaborative project of label founders A Taut Line and BD1982. Although the two artists have been running Diskotopia for 10 years now, this is the first time they have properly written and produced music together, making this release even more exciting. This first EP traverses genres in similar ways to the solo work of both Tokyo-based producers, but here the clashes of ideas and approaches create a unique and strikingly erratic sound. There is a thematic thread of hedonistic psychedelia explored through these 6 tracks, in addition to a clear disregard for conformity to a given trend that exemplifies what Diskotopia has been about as a label since 2010. 

The release opens with the murky fourth-world tribalism-funk of Equatoria, a fractured broken-beat percussion excursion lined with intoxicating gamelan rhythms and vaporous flute passages. Northern Jewelled imbues a techno-arachnidan DNA, winding disparate elements of percussion, Central-Europe string melodies, and dub-infused circuitry into a network of different textures across a motorik base. Body Formations fuses shades of Latin freestyle, filter house, and new jack swing into a fractal dance-routine workout. Divination Call is a skewed hack of asymmetric hip hop; a disembodied loop is micro-surgically interwoven between the threads of head-rush pads and bamboo breaths, served over a deviant batch of juddering drums and numbing bass. The spoken-word gothic aria Vorimba hovers and unfolds synthetically on itself in an operatic Andes-expedition fashion before the circle is closed with the heads-down thump n’ crush of Low Earth’s seismically expansive avant-rock space-disco freakout. Disjointed, hallucinatory, and perfect for bedsit-bound flashbacks of throwing crooked shapes on empty dancefloors.

He awoke disorientated, his vision blurred in the early morning light. His face had been stuck to the lino floor in the kitchen, seems he hadn't made it up the stairs to bed then. The stench of cigarette smoke clung to the air and the fumes of undisclosed alcohol spillages travelled up his nostrils. Everybody had already made their escape before morning (and the inevitable regret) had begun to creep in, and as usual he'd been left to pick up the pieces.

Last month we shared the news of Brighton-based party starters Accidental Meetings taking their first steps into the label world, enlisting the help of friends and family with close ties to the party to contribute tracks to their mammoth compilation. After lockdown left the crew with no events in sight, they made a pledge to pull together the 21-track offering which journeys through the electronic sounds that will be at the core of the label in the future. From dancehall and electro to UK techno and breaks, the release features cuts from the likes of Chungo, Charles Green, Alexis, Caldera, ZaaZaa, Kincaid and DJ Tess, which we premiered last month.
