Review: A Relentless, Euphoric Journey – DJ Matt Er’s Mix for Dawn Raver / Palatine Sound


Listening to DJ Matt Er’s latest electronic mix for Dawn Raver / Palatine Sound wasn’t just a session—it was a trip. From the moment the first beat hit, I found myself locked in, swept up in a fluid, high-energy journey through dance music’s darker and deeper corners. But what made this ride so special was how relentless it was without ever feeling repetitive. The momentum just kept going, each track bleeding into the next with surgical precision, and yet it never lost its soul.

What stood out most was Matt Er’s instinct for variation—just the right divergence of sub-genres to keep things dynamic, but still cohesive. The transitions were so intuitive, it felt less like a mix and more like a single living, breathing organism.

One of my favourite moments came with the back-to-back of Kerry Chandler’s “Bar A Thym” (yes, the Cowbell Cowboy strikes again) and Eddie Amador’s classic “House Music.” I’m always a sucker for an anthem or two, and this one-two punch scratched that itch perfectly—massive grooves, timeless hooks, and pure dancefloor euphoria.

Around 1 hour and 10 minutes in, there’s a voice—some talking layered into the mix. I found myself wondering if it was Matt Er himself. He’s known for sneaking in the occasional comment or quip, always with that cheeky humour of his, but I couldn’t quite pin it down this time. Just another layer of intrigue in a mix full of subtle charm and confident craftsmanship.

In summary: DJ Matt Er’s mix for Dawn Raver / Palatine Sound is an expertly woven, endlessly engaging ride through electronic music’s underground and beyond. It’s driving, clever, playful in just the right places, and above all—made for movement. A total triumph.

Dawn ("Raver") always loved a good rave, be it in Leeds, Manchester, Ibiza, Miami, Chamonix, Wales or elsewhere. I put together the selection for the mix in the first 6 weeks of 2024.

The art of disobedience

Matter continues his mission to rescue Hiphop from its self-imposed, over-intellectualised boom-bap backpack, cornball-ass pop-techno, wannabe gangsters pouring out their hearts over rnb beats abyss.  His objective is to restore it to its original, majestic and arguably sole purpose, a purpose that we will refer to here as Hiphouse.
