It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal. 

Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month we invite an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.

This month we have invited @valentinomora (IDO)to respond to this concept.

"Hailing from a long line of talented Dutch producers, Alex O’Rion is one of the  brightest stars to recently emerge on Hernan Cattaneo’s SUDBEAT label. He started to experiment with music at 14 year old and was inspired by the likes of Sasha, Nick Warren and John Digweed. Although his first appearance was in the trance scene, Alex soon found out that deep progressive music was his passion.

The switch to progressive house was a massive decision, but a very successful one. Alex has released over 150 tracks on beatport and has the ongoing support of many big names like Hernán Cattáneo, Nick Warren, Guy J, Cid Inc, Eelke Kleijn, Guy Mantzur, Quivver amongst others.

After his debut EP on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat in 2018 things started looking really bright for the Dutchman. Later that year he delivered two more EP's for Sudbeat. Every track of those releases made it into the beatport top 100 best selling tracks with no less than 3 tracks in the top 10.

In 2019 he signed his first EP on Nick Warren's beloved HOPE recordings. 'Timeless' instantly landed in beatport's top 10 and got supported by the biggest names out there. Alex had no intentions of slowing down and released his music on the highly respected REPLUG label hosted by Dan Orsen and Cid Inc. At the end of 2019 he will make his debut on Movement Recordings and will be represented worldwide by Movement Bookings as well.

This year saw Alex also notching up live appearances as a dj. He played on Sudbeat’s Showcase in Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek and will also perform during ADE, plus notable appearances at Nature One Festival in Germany, Ministry Of Sound in London and Es Paradis in Ibiza."

Northern Electronics: Anthony Linell & Varg2TM

Not one to shout too loud or make a scene, Eric Cloutier is a resilient disc jockey and producer who perhaps represents techno and its truth in the most humanistic and humble of senses.

For many years he has worked tirelessly perfecting his craft and for anyone who has witnessed him dj, they will know that the intricacy, dedication and commitment is meticulous. 

His sets are free roaming, fast paced and wild. They are designed to encourage as much provocative thought as they are to move the feet and sound best played loudly beneath the cloak of darkness.

This special mix which he has recorded for us is no exception to that. A pensive, beat juggling affair which blurs the lines between techno, IDM and dub. It's a real treat and we are humbled and delighted to be able to feature him as part of our Ransom Note mix series.

Eric Cloutier: Brainsurgery Beat Science Mix

@3phaz is a Cairo-based artist whose elusive creative output shows a love for heavy bass, distortion, and the deconstruction of the Shaabi [x] aesthetic. His own productions, which he describes as 'Post-Shaabi', explore the raw energy of Shaabi music and take it a step further. Others have made comparisons to the sensory overload you can encounter in the streets of Cairo, where motorbikes and rickshaws fly by, blasting Shaabi through busted speakers. 

3Phaz doesn't want his project to have an image or a face as to avoid having restrictions on how he develops his sound, or being pigeonholed as either Electro-Shaabi or Mahraganat. His mix for Pantropical is high-octane, percussive club music.

From time to time it feels like a dream. The big boys are playing his records and the party goes on and on. David Jach is no longer one of those DJs…He found his way, his style and works steadily on his magic. Since years, his records are lauded, and his tour schedule is heavy these days. Jach represents a new generation of musicians, who rely on their own feelings rather than on the “great hypes”. And still, his sound somehow manages to sneak in between the almost identical sounding tracks of the Beatport Top20. However, David Jach does not only count on his vinyl productions but also on his live qualities. The freshness of his performance is catching and evokes an almost romantic picture of perfect Open-Air-Days and Club nights. Colourful, slightly soaked with minimal-house and deep sound elements, always a bit nostalgic but at the same time several steps ahead of the usual bubbling techno-releases.

Times Artists Podcast 23 - David Jach

Whether it's through his warm, bouncy DJ sets or his slick house productions, there's a signature rawness and cosmic touch to everything Monty Luke puts his hands on.

With almost two decades in the game, Monty first cut his teeth as a producer on Dirtybird's Mothership sub-label alongside Tasho, a release that's got a reboot recently via his own Black Catalogue imprint. The impetus to start his own label came after a move to Detroit in 2008 and a subsequent position at Carl Craig's renowned Planet E, where he helped helm the development of the label. 

He went on to launch Black Catalogue in 2011, predominantly as a platform to release his own efforts on this own terms, both under his own name and his Mandingo alias, as well as shining a light on underground artists like Sepehr, Stefan Ringer and Dave Aju. 

We invited him to take control of this week's Ransom Note mix for an hour of raw, interstellar sonics that fire you up into outer space before bringing you back down to solid ground...
