You are in a cave in an Indonesian ashram. Surrounded by statues of Ganesh, the fragrant smells of incense and flowers put your senses at ease as you sublimate. The sound of trickling fountains reverberates throughout your mind, breaking your defenses down into a state of pure, blissful relaxation. This is the ideal environment to introduce the freshly minted "Leaving Records for the New Age" series. Fittingly, these sounds come straight from label founder and forward-thinking steward of modern New Age music, Matthewdavid. He is your pilot for the duration of his Ashram, transporting you from one serene scene to the next on his Mindflight Express. In this collection of three long-form compositions, heavy water sounds and flute mix with field recordings from Bali, sweeping synthesizers, and the angelic vocals of Nora Keyes (“Dancing Ganesh”). Though Ashram documents a special time and place in the producer's life, it may only whet listeners' appetites for its double-LP followup, the contemporary New Age masterwork Trust the Guide and Glide.

Jesse Peterson and I chose to work with the collaborators and remixers featured on our new Turn On The Sunlight EP, because we're fans of their music! Jesse is a close musical co-explorer of Koen Holtkamp (Mountains /Thrill Jockey.) While in New York finishing our debut self-titled full-length, Holtkamp came by the studio and played on "Wednesday Tone Poem." We new we wanted to release the results, but weren't sure at the time, on what project. Here, it fits perfectly! "Profusion Electric"came about while I was listening to Build An Ark improvs, from our sessions for the LOVE Parts 1 & 2 releases,and wanted to see what would happen if we took this particular piece in an experimental psychedelic direction,so Jesse added guitars and organ. I had a lot of fun mixing and effecting this funky freak-out! I originally asked my dear friend Miguel Atwood-Ferguson to do a remix of one of the songs from the TOTS LP. He listened and chose Big Sur Foghorn, however, instead of doing a remix,he composed a gorgeous chamber journey inspired by the song. He played all of the instruments and co-mixed" Ghost fires From Heaven's Far Verges Faint Illume,"with engineer Benjamin Tierney. Daedelus and I have done a lot together over the years, and he's the most frequent remixer of my various projects. We're so stoked that "Firefly Night" was blessed with his magic! Being that our label Disques Corde is based in Japan, and that we'd just had a really beautiful tour there, we wanted to include a Japanese artist on the record. My first choice was Nobukazu Takemura. I've been buying his records since the mid-90s. We were delighted that he was into what we were doing! Sent him the parts and the result is an epic electro-acoustic Child's View white noise wash out of "Always Enough / Oh, Magnificent Nature."Finally, Coffee & Cigarettes Band were chosen by Disques Corde who they work with closely. We had a lot of fun with those cats while last in Japan, so it was great to have them on board! Thanks for listening!

The Gradients project was created to blend different creative platforms. Our philosophy is that nothing in life is black or white, but a gradient. We explore this concept through various intersections and collaborations between mediums including (not limited to) visual art, design, dance, film, music, architecture, food, computer science, and more.

The most recent Gradients Project that NY-based artist Kathy Lee (aka Yaeji) spearheaded has been the Gradients Mix series--a collection of 30 minute mixes that aurally translate a gradient of 2 colors. She has also been hosting Live Gradients shows in New York where each musical performer is assigned a color to interpret through their set.

"'Hue' was an audio-visual study for me. When I first decided to challenge myself and make multiple tracks that could sit under one theme to be an EP or album, I was stuck with the preconceived idea that it has to hold one consistent sound. That very quickly became limiting for me, so I decided to think of the songs as colors instead, flowing from one to the other like a gradient, to inspire my production. That is why my tracks are each named a color and they all connect to become one, long gradient."

2009 saw the international release of HIGH WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM, the debut by Carlos Niño & Friends. It was a record that featured, what Niño refers to as, "collage compostions." He used material from recording sessions and live concerts by his other ensembles, including Build An Ark and The Life Force Trio, as sound source for songs. He would then work with various collaborators on developing the pieces . . .

In front of you is the new record by Carlos Niño & Friends, entitled AQUARIUSSSSSSS. This project finds Niño back to work, sampling, looping, editing, and processing recordings he's made of himself playing various instruments, and recordings of ensembles that he leads. The feel is more ambient and new age than the first, and plays like a soundtrack to a film of psychedelic visual music, for exploration, reflection, meditation and relaxation.
