Disquiet Junto Project 0153: Groove Lock

i just got notice of beta test of the mogee app on ipad.

I connected the Mogee (contact mike) to a handy finger coaster and finger drummed a short sequence, sitting on the arm of a leather couch. sample was set to D in the Mogee app. uploaded to Ableton live and trimmed. noticed that the loop was 6 bars, approximately. we'll see what trouble that causes ;)

SoundCloud recently introduced the ability for a track to be looped on the website. That is, the listener can hit a button (details at disquiet.com/QVvCF) and the track will play over and over. This week’s project will make use of that feature. This week’s project will also, I should note, inform next week’s project. But you can do next week’s without doing this week’s, and vice-versa.

Step 1: Record a short, original piece of music/sound of between roughly 3 and 9 seconds intended to be set on repeat.

Step 2: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Valve Spring [disquiet0153-groovelock]

I knew exactly what I was gonna do as soon as I read the title for this weeks assignment. I'm mildly obsessed with my cat, in fact I don't think this is the first time she has made it into a Junto project submission of mine. This is a recording I made when my cat (Kimchi) was crying to go outside. I had been trying for days to get a recording of her meow (she doesn't do it very often) so I wait a good five or ten minutes after her first cry to catch these snippets. 
I took the original track, cut some of the silence, amplified it, and then removed some of the room noise from it.
I used the same approach to databend the picture file in Audacity.

Open Door For Cat. Repeat.  (disquiet0153-groovelock)

Recorded for Disquiet Junto Project no. 153 (http://disquiet.com/2014/12/04/disquiet0153-groovelock/). I recorded some random sounds around the house with a Zoom H4N (cooking sounds, kids with lego, fiddling with strings of guitar) and imported the file into an audio editor. Listening for rhythmic content or interesting timbres I then proceeded to cut the sounds up and rearrange them.

For this Disquiet Junto assignment, I was charged with the task of “record[ing] a short sound intended to be set on repeat.” Desirous of making use of the maximum time allotted for the assignment, I opted to make the ‘sound’ [loop] exactly nine seconds long. In order to bring a nine-second piece of 4/4 rhythm to a seamless, repeatable, and loopable four-bar close, it necessitated that the piece’s tempo be set to approximately 106.60 beats per minute.

To this rhythmic pace, I time-stretched and heavily effected an obscure one-bar sample containing honky-tonk piano, twangy guitar, and lazy drums that I have had for many years, and whose source escapes me. I then proceeded to layer three synthesizer parts beside the time-stretched sample, mindful to augment and complement the odd, ‘non-scalar harmonics’ hinted at within the original sample. Each of these parts was run through a distinct variation of a singular, deep, swelling reverb preset. Finally, a heavy, throbbing overdriven bass was added to push the piece along.

Seamlessly looping heavily delayed and reverberated sound sources proved very difficult; due to pre-delays, the sound usually begins ‘dry’ and ends ‘wet.’ Therefore, I actually recorded double the length—eight bars—of each track just in order to capture the resultant wet sound present by the beginning of the fifth bar. I then deleted the first four bars of each track and only used the fifth through eighth bars, shifting them to the beginning of each track.

Space Time Continuum[disquiet0153 - Groovelock]

For recording a short sound to be set on repeat with the new Soundcloud "repeat playing track" feature, start with a slightly altered melody from another song you are working on, a song you almost completely dismantled and squashed Thursday night before receiving notice of this Disquiet Junto project.

That night, you fed the melody through a certain favored synth which you ultimately decided not to use, as the tone was too different, darker. But for a "groove lock," looping the melody on this synth was the first thing that came to mind.

Add some effects to bring out the hazier edges, set up Ableton’s Granulator for the bass tone. Finally, add the sample from a video in the Tate Modern recorded on your phone in Autumn 2013, something about a manuscript (or is he saying “that worries me”?), seemingly lost, and an inability to talk about it.

With the sample and the earlier dismissal of the synth, forgetting recurs as a theme. Forgetting: locked and repeated. And as the piece loops, do you go deeper into its layers (as long as you remember to pay attention), or do you forget it to the background of your room? Is the manuscript forever lost?

I took this assignment as an opportunity to explore the new Twisted Tools sample pack Binary Windows in S-Layer. So it's basically a drum rack with 8 S-Layer Binary Windows, and some effects to add some layering on the send channels.

CoaT - Binary Groove Lock (disquiet0153 - Groovelock)

Decided to go for a brazilian percussive track, as the Carnival rehearsals are starting in full swing this side of the equator. Recorded each percussion line separately, and mixed them all up. Applied a few filters here and there, but only to enhance the sound.

That said.  Handheld Panasonic cassette recorder (found on trash day back in the '90s) was used to record my doggerel vocal whatnot.  That was played into the mic of a computer recording to Virtual ANS in a pixelated, vaguely sonographic form.  Wherein a piece of that which was increased in contrast was also reversed and played very   s l o w l y   without pitch change.  Trimmed in Audacity, that's what's playing here.

Unclearly So [disquiet0153-groovelock]

NOTE: this is intended to be played as a loop using the repeat function recently introduced by Soundcloud. 

Addendum: The looping issue I experienced seems to be an artifact of using Safari initially. Once played in Chrome, the repeat point seems somewhat more consistent. 

This is a bit of a disappointment for me as I adore vinyl lock groove recordings. I would have loved to produce a loop that could be consistently looped on Soundcloud. But the repeat function seems barely useable, and it is definitely NOT operating as a loop should with gapless playback. So, I tried to create a loop that leant itself to the random periodicity between playbacks on Soundcloud. In my testing, gaps anywhere from one to ten seconds seem to occur. I found such gaps really detracting when listening to other's loops (though the material in the loops was great) so I decided to build some moments of silence into my loop hoping that this would mask the inconsistencies of playback on this platform. What does 273.15 K taste like? [disquiet0153-Groovelock]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
