Disquiet Junto Project 0300

3 pads playing 3 chords, but I got overly excited for the FX post-hold; EQ variations and volume fluctuations. We actually see a variety of hump-movement (as I like to call it) within each EQ connected to each instrument.

Believe it or not this is 'minimal effects' for me.

Triage [disquiet0300]

Not having much time to do the Junto challenges at the moment but felt I had to take part in the 300th one! Being "Disquiet" I felt it had to be a D Major chord. Recorded using the Roland D-50, processed by a Random Source Haible Tau Phaser. A Roland Juno 106, whose filter cutoff is slowly opened during the piece, and Sonic Couture's sampled Cristal Bachet.

Disquiet 300 (disquiet0300)

Disquiet Junto Project 0300: 3 chords x 100 seconds. 
Three 100 second long tracks blended together, So I’m offering to you here 300 seconds worth in just 100 seconds, more value for your time!
I played and hybrid triad,  Esus2 (E-B-F#). I wanted to hold the notes for as long as it takes, not easy with most acoustic instruments.
My choice was Electric Guitar (Stratocaster) through a Line6 pedal board to benefit from the infinite decay of that “particle” reverb I’ve been using a lot to produce reverb-drone.
Second instrument a bowed upright bass (00:06 mark, overdubbed thrice to get the three note chord sustaining for 100 sec)
Third performer: another infinite sustain acoustic instrument I own, my Indian harmonium (starts at 00:22 mark), again, overdubbed thrice to use its three different registers: lows, highs, and tremolo (an amazing mechanical, fully acoustic creepy tremolo harmoniums have, very upfront around 00:48). 100 seconds of that edited on the mix.
When the guitar chord almost vanished and all you hear is the remains of the particle reverb (00:58)  I overdubbed an arpeggiated take of the 3 note chord as an additional method to get the chord sounding for 100 seconds.
I also play a bonus bowed upright simple melody (at 00:28) to provide some variation to the plain triad. Everything was performed and mixed today at home.
No synths, no samples.

300 Suspended Seconds Worth (disquiet0300)

I love my new Yamaha reface DX, I love my OP-1, and I love my canadian "Art & Lutherie" guitar, I decided to play an E Chord, I played with the midi looper on the DX programmed some chord notes, after I recorded the result to cubase overdub the OP-1 and the guitar.......have fun!!

DX 300 in E-Major(disquiet0300)

This week's Junto, to celebrate the 300th consecutive challenge, we had to choose a chord, and record it three times on three different instruments, for 100 seconds, and then blend them.

I chose Db Maj7 - which is a chord made by stacking a major 3rd, a minor 3rd, and a major 3rd. All the threes! :-) I played this as broken chords on the Nord Piano, a sustained chord on the Streichfett, and as an arpeggio on the BassStation 2. Lots of reverb and echoes, to differently place each instrument in a soundstage and add more sonic seasoning.

These days more into drone and tone than chords and such, just messed with 3 notes: A, E and B.  Not necessary in any hard order/inversion/octave assignment, though the underlining idea was a stack of fifths--so very loosely, again, A, E, B.

All instruments used were Android phone apps tracked live DI. Sound Effects Generator, S.A.M.M.I. (in drone mode) and Keuwl Music Pad.  Used note to frequency charts to tune these instruments to concert pitch notes. Or thereabouts. Specified notes and pitches aren't a usual thing for what I do, but I worked to keep it exact & simple enough to allow for other things to creep in.

Sometimes did 2 or more takes of what I did use, but only used 3 tracks to mixdown to this. Pan and some level changes to mix, that's all.  Was aiming that each track would have its own levels and variations there upfront rather than added on later.

J300 - disquiet0300

Here I celebrate growing up with the electric guitar--the Who, Live at Leeds; Hendrix at Monterey Pop; Sonic Youth, many live shows; Glenn Branca and Jerry Garcia and John Cipollina, the ringing and reverberating of an electric guitar turned up high. I chose as my chord the chord represented by the open strings of an electric guitar, all strings detuned by 1 half step except for the low E (detuned 3 half-steps). I played this on an odd Tokai guitar (shown here)--made out of aluminum and fitted with an internal Smoky amp. I ran this out to a splitter that ran to two other Smoky amps, close-miked. I smacked the chord hard and let it ring and feedback, hitting it again at odd intervals, and recorded the resulting three tracks.

I then picked out the notes to the same chord on the piano while listening to the tracks on headphones. 

last, I put the recorded guitar track on my phone, put my phone at the bottom of a didjeridoo, and recorded the sound coming out the other end. 

I copied the main guitar track and dropped that copy by an octave, then slightly panned the two amp tracks hard left and right, detuning them a bit. Lastly I delayed two of the three guitar tracks a bit to thicken things up.

just to make the track punch me in the face :) I dropped on a heavy kick drum.

not much other processing besides some reverb and a bit of compression and eq here and there.

disquiet0300 3x100

Suss Müsik owns a copy of Ted Greene’s Chord Chemistry, an artifact from classical guitar lessons taken long, long ago. The book is like a skinny encyclopedia for guitar nerds, diving into the nuances of systematic voice leading and harmonic progressions as an approach to composition. We’d tell you more if we could remember any of it.

Suss Müsik is fascinated by the way that a singular component can be modularized and extended to create a system. The artist Sol Lewitt understood this concept very well, developing a complex visual language from a single geometric form. Chords are the linear elements that give shape to modular structures we call “songs” — it’s amazing the emotive depth a single chord can carry in the right context.

For this short piece, Suss Müsik selected the chord Eb7 for piano, mellotron and 12-string guitar. We chose this chord because it’s one of those chords that sounds ghastly played in isolation, and yet when bridged between other voices it has an almost lyrical quality. 

The mellotron was played on dual “church organ” settings, creating a harsh phasing as the cycles overlapped in unison. The guitar was played with a Vox amplifier that for some reason picked up a pleasant background hum. The piano increased in force and volume as we neared the 100-second mark. The piece is titled Lewitt.

My first Disquiet Junto was 0157 back in January 2015. As I head towards my third year I’ve lost count of how many tracks I’ve created. I’ve learned so much from the projects and from other contributors yet still feel uneducated compared to what my peers create each week. I remain in awe.

For this week’s I struggled a bit. I had an idea in my head about using some vocals and I’m too stubborn to let it go. The chord is there in the form of three instruments from Ableton - Decaying Daffodils (Synth Rhythmic), Ambi Reversible Guitar and the Basilica Lute. The vocals are from Black Octopus Sound - Echoes by Holly Drummond. An added drum rhythm and some basic effects (reverb and delay).

We all start in the same place. We all end up somewhere different. It’s what make Disquiet Junto so pleasurable and exciting. Here’s to the next 300.

Disquiet Junto Project 0300: The 300th Project
3 chords x 100 seconds

Step 1: For the 300th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project, choose a chord. Read the 6 steps of these instructions all the way through before making a decisions about instrumentation (Step 2) or recording (Steps 3 and 4). Understanding the intended end result will potentially influence those decisions.

Step 2: Choose three different instruments on which to play the chord selected in Step 1.

Step 3: Record yourself playing for 100 seconds that chord on the first of the instruments you chose in Step 2. You may want to record slightly longer than 100 seconds and edit back. Not every instrument has infinite sustain. You may need to use different techniques (strumming, sequencing, preparing, etc.) to achieve the 100 seconds. Consider those different techniques and the role they’ll have in the resulting sound.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for each of the other two instruments from Step 2. Consider how the three instruments, as well as the techniques you employ to play them, will correlate with each other.

3.00pm Eternal [Disquiet0300]

My submission for the 300th Disquiet Junto project. I don't know exactly when I started participating in these. I've deleted different iterations of my Soundcloud account, so I can't easily figure out when I started. I know its been a while though, at least 4+ years. It's been an amazing resource to push me in directions I wouldn't have pursued otherwise. Even when I don't submit a piece, the weekly prompts make me think. It's also been a gateway to a community that I'm very happy to be a part of. Thanks @disquiet for all you've done for me and the rest of the Junto.

The three instruments I picked come from three distinct phases of my musicianship. All are playing a G-major chord. The first is a guitar loop via Phonogene, the second is a OP-1 volt synth pad and the third is a generative patch - DPO A/B and STO providing the notes of the chord, with Cold Mac, Maths and Teletype providing modulation and stereo movement. I also recorded the modular as a short loop on the OP-1 to provide a fourth track.

I'm happy with how this turned out, and especially happy to be a part of the auspicious 300th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project.

Interlude in A#m (disquiet0300)
With limited musical education, finding the specifics of the chord to use was the first hurdle. I know what I like and the notes involved are fairly obvious, but the naming of chords is not my forte. So, after finding my favorite(for this project), I consulted http://pianochord.org/ and found what I had chosen was A#m. Of course Logic informed me it was in fact a B flat minor, but I’m sticking with the piano experts ;-). The piece has two pads made from layering multiple synths in EXS24 and two tracks in Sculpture with one being a custom percussive mallet patch. The piece uses the base chord and both inversions during it’s progression, but is more about mood and feeling than actual song.

Interlude In A#m(disquiet0300)

Happy 300th Marc and all Disquiet Junto members! What a milestone! I've spent the past several months in the realms of video synthesis and haven't been creating much in the audio realm, but I couldn't miss being a part of this celebration. For my three instruments I focused on two within my modular (four notes from the Patch Chord driven by a DPO,  and a voice of four notes from a Mutable Instruments quartet) and one from my Two Voice (where I used the classic cheat of tuning each of the four oscillators to serve as one of the notes in my chosen four note chord) ... all were played and manipulated live on the fly. I chose the intervals as described in Wagner's so-called "Tristan Chord" and played those four notes using the three instruments. Some have suggested that Wagner's use of this chord signaled the end of Western tonal music.﻿ Obviously he did a lot more with it in his opera than I do here.

A Major add9 (disquiet0300)

The chosen chord was : Dm9
Three synths, (VSTi synths), played into Zoom H6 one at a time.
Resulting wavs reloaded and processed (volume, pan, effects).

First Synth is a Polysix Bass Arpegiattor. One Chord plays for 100 seconds.
Second Synth is A Korg MS 20, the midtones. One Chord many hits in different sequences.  Waves Enigma Hallucino Spread Effect applied, (pan delay), for more boy and character.
Third Synth is another Polysix, an Analog Pizzo with no sustain. Many short hits. Chopped into time with synth two, (111bpm aprox.)

Result is a driving tech drone, industrial yumminess you could almost dance to.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
