A Rough Patch Disquiet 0488

I left this one aside till I read today's challenge. It is just an idea, played on a borrowed Gibson Les Paul using a borrowed Epiphone little tube amp. I Was charmed by the tone and played some simple strummed chords and promised to work on it later. I tried to do something with this several times during the past few months but always failed and left it for a more inspiring day, again and again.

Today I opened the master, it was very short (1.5 minutes) and I found two takes of the original recording on that Gibson Les Paul (Dec 2020), some aborted Organ overdub (Jan 2021) and some cymbal washes (Mar 2021). 

I cleaned all that up a little, added a bass doubling the Les Paul root notes, took a picture of the Les Paul (still here, she might be claimed back at any moment now) and I'm done with this one.

Second Chance(disquiet0488)

“The unadorned idea of a goal is ambiguous,” writes the neuroscientist Read Montague in his book Your Brain Is (Almost) Perfect. “As with any complex information-processing system, there are many levels of software in the brain … all other subgoals take a backseat to the most important edict—‘Stay alive until tomorrow.’”

One could be forgiven for procrastinating creative efforts during these past fourteen or so months. Alternatively, such conditions may also inspire a flurry of new activity that otherwise would not have happened. Regardless, some amount of stuff doesn’t get done.

Suss Müsik had an album ready to go for nearly a year before actually completing and releasing it this week. The concept was to revisit prior works with simpler, more spare arrangements. 

Suss Müsik was also interested in exploring what French philosopher Gilles Deleuze described as “figurative analogies,” blurring the auditory lines between how digital and analogue sounds are represented.

This week’s Junto contribution, titled Deleuze, is the demo of a track that wasn’t included on an album that almost never got made. A figurative analogy, perhaps, for what we mean to do vs. what we actually do.

Disquiet Junto Project 0488: Reverse Delay. The Assignment: Do something you’ve been putting off.

This was originally intended as some kind of music-text-mixture with a voiceover detective story in a Lovecraftian universe. I've been struggling with this piece for 4 years, but it never seemed finished, somehow something was missing, but whenever I overworked it, something better came out, that had nothing to do with this track. At the same time I liked it all the time. I am now taking the opportunity to finalise a version enriched with a few throat clearings and breaths which can be interpreted as mentioned story …

Made in Caustic for Android. Mixed in Reaper.

Disquiet Junto Project 0488: Reverse Delay
Assignment: Do something you’ve been putting off.

While searching online for information about Ampex 601 tape recorders I came across the work of Joseph Hammer a Los Angeles improviser who works with tape loops on an Ampex 601. I was intrigued by his method, including the gloved hand, and wanted to try something similar.   

Three improvisations on 3 tracks. A long, layered background; a repeated short gesture recorded on a 10 second loop; and an animated improvisation using a 4 second loop. The sound source is a small modular synthesizer looped on an Ampex 601 tape recorder. Mixed in Audacity.

For Disquiet Junto 0488 "Reverse Delay", in which participants were asked to create something that functions as the completion of something that had been put off. In my case - I've been planning a series of sketches in which I'd quickly create a graphic score than record a performance of that score using only one instrument (virtual or real), albeit with multi tracking allowed. In this case, I chose u-He's Bazille, which was far from the type of instrument I'd heard in my head while creating the score, and was not capable of a the vocal components (which are instead synthesized with modulated formant techniques). the Junto likes to know the equipment used so: RD2000 as controller, Bazille (programming quickly from scratch/init), Reaper. That's it.

Three similar tracks, all looking for the same thing. I'd planned to re-record these and make them "better" but decided they do what they were meant to do. "Better" is subjective.
I find myself using the Digitone more as a standalone synth than as a sequencer box. I've been annoyed with the presets and the sound pool and looking for ways to get around these. Figured out how to begin a track with a clean slate of sine waves and began editing there with this Junto in mind.
Each of these tracks is a short sequence captured with the Volante's looper, and frozen so it doesn't degrade and disintegrate just yet. Then, as the rain was falling out the window on these two spring evenings these were made, I'm looking for a feel, merely playing the "melody" over the repeating patterns. I imagined I'd return to these and fix them up or re-record them, but talked myself out of it.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
