Disquiet Junto Project 0596: Phylogeny Junto
The Assignment: Depict genres’ evolution over time in music.

Step 1: “Phylogeny is,” per the American Heritage Dictionary, “The evolutionary development and history of a species or trait of a species or of a higher taxonomic grouping of organisms.” Consider how such a concept can be applied to genre.

Step 2: Think about how genres change and develop over time, spawning and merging with other genres.

Step 3: Record a piece of music that depicts, charts, or otherwise expresses an example of how genres might follow the model of phylogeny.

Deadline: This project’s deadline is the end of the day Monday, June 5, 2023, at 11:59pm (that is, just before midnight) wherever you are. It was posted on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Disquiet Junto Project 0596: Phylogeny Junto

Music for Subway, 808, and Pipe Organ (disquiet0596)

A work in progress / abandonded track from early 2023, finished and remixed June 1st 2023.
This track, I created earlier this year for the same proto-jazz proyect that generated my track for [junto0584](https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz/nocturnal-studio-jam-number-2) this was intended to be a jazz-lounge jam, I recorded the electric piano part over a jazz drum loop and a walking upright bass, then decided that I wanted a more lounge/funky beta and grabbed a different loop. I clicked on the wrong loop-file an dI got this weird electro-beat that completely destroyed the track's jazz feel. I tried to re record the bass, with a fretless bass, more soul-funk groovy but it didn't work, it was too hybrid.

So as the track evolved from a jazz jam to...well, this; I decided to tweak a couple of things, mix it and share it with you as my example of Phylogeny.

As a casual bird watcher, I'm constantly observing birds and listening to their calls and songs. Especially when I'm hiking in a pine forest near our home. Here at the house at night, there are Great Horned Owls that occasionally call to each other. This is my interpretation of the evolutionary development of the song of a large extinct bird species through thousands of years.

This repeating and subtly evolving sequence was recorded into Ableton Live using Make Noise 0-CTRL controller/sequencer and 0-Coast synthesizer. I slowly manually manipulated the parameters and filters on the two instruments. Used Strymon Big Sky, Aqusmatiq Dedalus Delay and Cableguys ShaperBox 3 for effects. Phylogeny of Imagined Deep Forest Bird Song [disquiet0596]

For this assignement I took Gute Nacht, o Wesen from BWV 227 Jesu, Meine Freude and tried to depict a kind of evolution starting from mellotron, to ARP 2600 to Ableton's Voice Box. Not much of a genre but I wanted to focus on electronic redention of a vocal score.
I first thought of two voice inventions inspired by this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm4tBnUGW1M) but then I thought of recording a chorale singing a part and blending the other instruments in, but then I thought of outlining this kind of possible technological evolution within this "genre" in the XXth century. I am in a hurry today so I recorded everything without taking patch notes. 

I first copied the part with Dorico, exported single voices MIDI files and full score MIDI. Used a Mellotron emulation, my Arp 2600 clone and then Ableton Voice Box Choir preset. Added a bit of Shimmer Plate reverb (Hybrid Reverb Preset).

Switched on Bach (disquiet0596)

The musical tree of life is as difficult to apprehend as the biological one - but it is clear that there are common, if mysterious, origins. Raw rhythms and primordial pitches combine compellingly, leading to modern practices that are not as different as one might think.

Featuring operatic tenor and soprano voices, renaissance drums, psaltery, percussion, full orchestra, brushed drum kit, upright bass, muted trumpet, tenor sax, piano, electric bass and guitar, rock drum kit, and synthesizer.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
