Disquiet Junto Project 0621: The Leftovers
The Assignment: Use recently discarded material to make something new.

Step 1: At the end of the calendar year, people often participate in holidays that result in lots of leftover food. Think about the leftovers — discarded tracks, or MIDI files, or ideas — that result from your music-making process.

Step 2: Scrounge around on your hard drive and recording equipment, and in your memory, to access the sort of creative leftovers that came to mind in Step 1.

Step 3: Make a new track primarily using the resources that surfaced in Step 2. You can, of course, add new material. And be sure to reheat sufficiently.

There are two main aspects to the leftover-ness called for by the above disquiet brief in this. The first was discarded from a recent session which used the (software) Buchla Easel through two stages of Audio Damage's Enso looping machine, which resulted in a glitchy, spitty front end to the track. The second aspect was slightly outside of the brief, as it's not exactly 'recently' discarded - in fact, it comes from an Octave Cat retriggred bass loop made around 40 years ago! ... inspired by the Ultravox retriggered basslines of the early 80's, around 'Rage in Eden' era. The Leftovers

I’m taking from the trash bin this complete take on an actual composition that I recorded during last September and decided not to use, and instead make a new, different version. The new , “approved” version, shorter, faster, all acoustic, will be released during the winter, so this one became obsolete and has been lying on the trash for a couple of months now.

I took that photo in Tokyo Oct 2019.

For this junto project:

Scrounge around on your hard drive and recording equipment, and in your memory, to access that sort of creative leftovers.
Make a new track primarily using those resources.

Scintillating Heights (Long version demo) disquiet0621

Suss Müsik’s entire creative practice is centered around the quest to derive gold from detritus. It’s likely an attribute shared with carefree art school days of an earlier era: a time when post-modern photography, sweaty punk rock, and ramen noodles served as daily sustenance.

“Photographs, so much a part of our daily lives, become highly self-conscious when pulled from the fraying of their ordinary locations,” wrote the art critic Julia Ballerini in 1989. “They refer back to their origins in a different voice … suggest[ing] a complexity of potential attachments, detachments, and reconfigurations.”

For this week’s project, Suss Müsik utilized four handmade devices recently built from material laying around the workshop: a digital sample trigger, a joystick-activated grain synth, a touchscreen MIDI device, and a touchscreen modulation controller. These were used to manipulate sonic material (loops, found audio, etc.) from the backlog, some of which has been in the works for more than eight years.

Given the nature of this week’s offering, Suss Müsik captured the session on video.

Approaches(disquiet0621)

I've made collage audio forever, so this sort of project is easy for me.  The hard part is finding audio scraps that I haven't used, or used much.

In 2011, when I was living in Iowa City, I went downtown and made a bunch of field recordings.  A lot of that material ended up on my album Hide Yourself In Plain Sight.

One thing that didn't make the cut was me capturing a writer starting to read, and starting over, at Prairie Lights Bookstore.  He was reading something he wrote about Norbert Wiener and juxtaposing it with some Gwen Stefani reference, which to me is an excellent example of modern academic and literary nonsense, or I guess a "signal to noise".  

As that short clip in the track finished, I included two quick samples, panned left and right.  Left is a girl asking a bus driver a question, and Right is some drunk guy saying "Viggo Mortenstein" instead of Viggo Mortensen.

Also in there are some other loops, largely recorded from apps on the first generation iPad I had at the time.

This relates to Disquiet project 0615 where I uploaded a track from a small group I had recorded which I found generally unsatisfactory.  Nevertheless, I kept these tracks on file & this effort derives from one of them. I have attempted to make it more interesting by changes to tempo, pitch, & dynamics, together with some additional delay & reverb.

[disquiet] 0621 Lyra Leftover

This was a fun prompt because it - again! - made me do something new. I have a lot of “leftovers” in Ableton Note on my phone because I use it often to doodle around, kill time - like a quick drawing in a notebook or even playing a short round of Tetris. I never finished anything with it, probably also because I have not used Live in many years. Note has an export feature that saves all parts in one file. I used this on an ambient doodle with flutes and synth sweeps. The export emphasized the sweeps and sort of mixed the parts together - I really don’t understand how this feature works! The result sounded interesting though and I processed it with granchild on Norns. I then added some bells to finish my reheated menu of leftovers.

Disquiet0621 - Leftover Notes

I chose a few short tracks originally used as effects-fodder (not exactly discarded but pinched from other sources then distorted beyond recognition) and subjected them to various plugins found in Audacity – reversing, stretching, tempo-fiddling, distortion, reverb, delay, pitch alteration and tone enhancement. This was done without first auditing the selections, just to make the results a bit more problematic. No step was reversed, no sound discarded.

I then tried to make sense of what I’d done – tell a story, perhaps…

Turned out marginally better than I expected.

The Assignment: Use recently discarded material to make something new.

I startet with a folder that is in fact named "Resterampe" (German for something between "residual ramp", "junkyard" and "dollar store"; or so…) and in which I put interesting stems that I want to reuse some day.

I hammered together a Lyra 8 recording, a modular synth rhythm, some wooden and metal noise recordings. I added some freshly recorded melody and accompanying noises of a plastic bag of paper handkerchiefs.

Originally it was very minimal, but somehow it became overfreighted. I didn't change that, because it somehow fits the title.

Great prompt to revisit some random projects. Searched through this year's Ableton Live folder and found a few unfinished and half-baked files. Decided to use one from last March when I was fooling around with the Puremagnetik Microtron sample pack. I recently acquired Slate+Ash Spectres, so used a couple presets from it to get familiar with the software. Also added a couple tracks using Choreographs. Not sure what flavor I was going for but I'm ok with the result.

picked a Tascam recording from a quick palette noodle from earlier this month - some arrangement in live, added an older field recording for ambience + recorded some noisee plucks from my eurorack system

disquiet0621 - departure

This [disquiet0621] assignment had me scrounging around for bits that had lain dormant on my HD, and when I found this it felt kind of incomplete and seemed to lend itself perfectly for enhancements of all kinds. I supplemented the existing welcoming major key guitar ideas with a healthy helping of fatty Jazz bass lines soaked in delays, plus clicks'n'cuts percussion & naughty machine beats to give it a bit of a kick.

Anyway, enjoy and be sure to gobble all of this up -- as we all know, leftovers often taste even better the next day, and I should think that that is certainly the case here.

Sustenance [disquiet0621]

Thanks Marc for this  - it is quite useful to get one to review forgotten files that didn't quite make it anywhere.   I was thinking to name this "No light for the jealous night", but it didn't quite fit the theme, so I named it "Night Leftover".  I found this scrap and realized why I scrapped it.  It was too long, and it is still too long for which I apologize, but shortening it was very difficult.  Nevertheless, I still like it and wanted to get it out there. Night Leftover(disquiet0621)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
