The brief asks to turn what is quiet loud, and what is loud quiet, so I sampled insects from field recordings on freesound.org and used them to create every sound source in the track with the exception of a recording of a Dutch motorway which acts as the buried backdrop for the insect chorus above it.

Disquiet Junto 0673 asked us to record a song in which what is normally loud becomes quiet, and what is quiet becomes loud.

I started by improvising a fairly straightforward if dark verse-chorus progression on piano. I added simple bass, some programmed drums, and a lead guitar part. That simple arrangement became the canvas. 

To meet the criteria of the prompt, I threw lots of reverb on all 4 tracks— like a ridiculous amount of reverb. I always use sends to aux busses for reverb design for different instruments, so now it just was a matter of cranking up the sends and capturing just the wet (effected) signal and none of the dry (original) signal from the aux track. Some creative audio routing made that possible.

The result, to me, sounds like a song that is inside-out. What is loud is quiet, what is quiet is loud. Enjoy!

Two simple drones, pitched the same, one evolving out of the other. The first is made from my own recording of a thunderclap during a Sydney rainstorm, the second from a recording of the ambience of my house when we are out and the animals are asleep..

Minimal and mercifully short. Headphones recommended.

Building upon my previous composition, 'omeostasi' I inverted the sonic landscape of the piece. Notes once robust were rendered delicate, and those once subtle were amplified. 
This sonic inversion was achieved by manipulating amplitude levels within the original score. 
While timbres and effects underwent transformations, the underlying structure remained intact. 
The piece was realized through the synergy of Csound, which handled sound generation, and Python, which orchestrated the note sequence.

Process notes -
I started by thinking that verses are quiet and choruses are loud and that my (instrumental) piece would have a clear simple melody in the chorus section and longer notes for the verse. Then I would just make the chorus quiet and the verses louder or in some way more brash.

On Friday, I started working on my monthly Patreon pack - this time using Ableton Live’s Wavetable. I started from an “analog” preset, messed it up a bit and then came up with 10 variations. I put that aside for the pack and then opened a new Live set to branch off from there for this submission. 

On Saturday, I arranged the bones of what I had, added a little Roar distortion to the bass/drone and added a few unpredictable elements to finish the track. 

Tools used - Ableton Live, Wavetable, Roar & other native Live devices, Sonic Bloom Bodhrán & Kalimba, iZotope Ozone 9.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0673: Switchback. The assignment: Record a piece of music in which you make loud that which is usually quiet and quiet that which is usually loud.

One approach I use in creating ambient soundscapes is to lay down a foundation drone and layer melodies and other tracks on top. The drone is usually much quieter than the rest of the tracks. In following this week's prompt, the foundation track with noise is louder while the others are quieter, to the point that they all blend together.

I am busy right now but I wanted to participate and had already a track in mind. It's a simple remix from an unreleased ambient track, that was planned to have two silent noisefloors, one abstract, one of me walking trough leaves. It's now shorter, and I killed the abstract noise floor; the walking trough leaves is now dominant, the two tracks of music are now in the background.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
